double check that your AV is actually running the security center will give you the error if the AV services have been turned off. double check all the services are running and accounted for

registry hack doesn't work anymore, if you want aero on, you will need to have a video card that can handle aero, no way to make it emulated, there are apps out there that can give you a glass appereance but most seem to work only on XP.

in XP and Vista do you have simple file sharing enabled? if it is on for one you will need it enabled or disabled for the other as well for it to work correctly, simple file sharing can be found in the same place as XP (folder options->View-> Use sharing Wizard)

log on as the Admin account and re add yourself to the security permissions, that would be the quickest way

depends on how the computer was setup, is this an exchange based mailbox? POP3? was version of outlook? was cached exchange mode on? most likely there is a PST out there if it was a POP3 account, if it was an Exchange account the mail should be out on exchange server. most out stuff resides in c:\windows\documents and settings\<useraccount>\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook

DX cannot be removed from vista, i belive the reason was becaue parts of Aero are done in DX10,

there are some DX10 samples out there to try, do some google searchs on them, most games are not DX10 certified yet Company on Heroes is suppose to have a DX10 patch soon, but not sure when, many other games will follow suite but that may not be for awhile. the Nivdia Drivers for your Card might be beta, check nividia's webpage for the latest drivers there is also a section about installation on vista and DX10 that might be able to help you troubleshoot your issue
