  1. Is your processor overclocked?
  2. Because of the news, even the 64-bit versions were downloaded, too, despite not even having a 64-bit processor yet.
  3. It's mostly because of Vcache not writing all data to the HDD right away when a save request was made, the write behind cache. Also, you got the hardware cache on the HDD to worry about, too!
  4. There seems to be a bug. If I make the virtual memory bigger than 768 MB, I end up getting the following error message: Insufficient memory to initialize Windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer. This is despite the fact that it's not RAM!
  5. The first mentioned error message is from the BIOS. The dreaded "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" error message from the Award BIOS. The BIOS failed to detect a boot partition.
  6. It doesn't break anything to improperly restart usually. I only shut down with the power button since years because it is faster. And of course I have disabled the automatic scandisk after bad shutdown. Then you probably lost a major amount of HDD space. Don't be surprised if you get an error when files are being updated. Also, new files can end up being corrupted, because of files being crosslinked. You're asking for HDD corruption.
  7. Also, Microsoft says that with non Windows NT-based operating systems, defragmentation of the virtual memory will cause Windows to be messed up! BS! I defragmented the swap file under Windows 95 and Windows 98 for years and Windows was still fine.
  8. Seems like good enough reason NOT to believe Memtest app.. Likely a motherboard issue then. Because I don't have this issue, even when OC'ing my RAM.
  9. It's better to make the Vcache small than to disable it. 6 MB for max Vcache, MaxFileCache=6144 would be fine.
  10. Should have ran Memtest86 longer.
  11. No it does not "Curently my system was running without any startup process.. no system tray no vcache" the system will perform quite adequately with such low memory, in fact a vcache is unneeded in such a lite system until it is being pushed beyond its intended means, it cannot afford to I doubt for long. Because disk activities will be slowed down. Your web browser probably will be slow. Reminds me of and is just like Windows 3.1 without SMARTDRV! On one PC with Windows 3.1, without a disk cache, Netscape literally took at least around 5 minutes just for it to load! LOL!
  12. Don't disable Vcache! Doing that would make the HDD crank even more, just like in the 386 and 486 days!
  13. I agree. That looks like one of the spam E-mails I got. It's appearing that I may be required to have my internet service account deleted and get a different internet service account, because I'm getting non-stop spam E-mails. The majority of the E-mails are porn-related.
  14. Board Message Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, but we did not find any matches to display. Try again and broaden your search criteria. If you were searching for new posts since your last visit, it's possible that there are none to show.
  15. They are JPGs, but apparently didn't even try to compress them more!
  16. Is KB917008 required to be in another folder? The last time I had KB917008 in the HF folder, the KB917008 hotfix installer failed. I suspect that KB917008 isn't a supported hotfix for the HF method.
  17. LOL!
  18. That error message sounds like your PC got shut down or rebooted in the middle of installing Windows. If it gets shut down or rebooted in the middle of installing Windows, you're required to reformat and start over. That's what it's supposed to mean. I dunno why .Net Framework would cause that.
  19. A web page hijack is typical malware.
  20. Are you using HFCLEANUP? If you are it's unofficially a known issue. I had this problem when I used HFCLEANUP instead of nLite to remove Internet Explorer and some other stuff. If you are, you probably are going to get that message even for drivers that come with Windows XP! That's a strange issue, if you ask me. What is making Windows XP Setup be gay?
  21. RJARRRPCGP

    Code line error

I have the same problem, but this is with English Windows 2000 Pro SP4.
  22. HFSLIP 61012a is partially broken! KB917008 failed to install. The KB917008 installer is complaning about an invalid switch, in other words, an invalid parameter. I get a pop-up with the command line options when at "Registering Components". This problem didn't occur with previous versions of HFSLIP. This is with Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and the FDV fileset. Update: I'm not alone on this one, at least a couple reported having the KB917008 installer returning an invalid parameter error.
  23. You may still be at a slower speed! For me, even when Windows reports 48.0 kbps, I usually at 40 kbps. When I run download tests from various web sites and listen to streaming music, I'm at 40 kbps. I can't choose a 48 kbps file, because it will cut out and go into a rebuffering loop! Is there anything else I should try to get it at a true 48 kbps? It seems that I'm capable of going faster, even where I live, but it won't stay there! Before I bother with moving again?
  24. Thanks - looks like a very useful tool. But here is the puzzle... Process Explorer tells me that Idle is ~90%, whereas... Win98 resident System Tool > System Monitor tells me the processor is running 100% (the PC's cooler fan supports the latter figure, as it is always on, after a few minutes of switching the PC on.) :-( It's a bug somewhere in Windows 98. It has reported 100 percent of the processor, for me, too!
