  1. Um... You check your firewall or router? Maybe you've got some virus/trojan horse blocking the software from being updated? Or perhaps it's the Flying Spaghetti monster....
  2. Right-click on your desktop > click Properties > click Settings. It sould say right under the illustration of the monitor what type of graphics card you have. To speed up your computer: Have you defragmented the harddrive lately? Have you run your anti-virus/anti-spyware lately? Is there a cooling problem? And I don't know what the system requirements are for Sim City, but an AMD Duron = Intel Celeron, basically. Actually, the Duron line was discontinued/replaced by the Sempron, right?
  3. I was just about to ask if anyone still used Seagate? I had one of their drives for a long time; it was great, and worked really well...until it literally got fried by a family member....
  4. Crap, I just drooled on my keyboard. You owe me a new keyboard!
  5. Unless it's already formatted, then all you have to do is give it a letter, or change the drive letter if there's a conflict with another drive.
  6. Update your anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware definitions, then do a virus-scan and spy-ware/adware scan in safe-mode. Programs that "free" up RAM need RAM to run...what's the purpose of that?! Heh. Stick with Zxian's advice.
  7. I suggest Netgear. I recently bought a Linksys WRT54G router, and nearly 2 months after purchasing it and working on it, it STILL won't work properly. I've even tried 3rd party firmware, but it's no use. Maybe mine it just defective, I don't know. But I'm sticking with my Netgear router until I get this Linksys one figure out. I also believe -- don't know where I read it -- that the super-g routers are really good for streaming media. But don't take that to heart -- maybe some one else can back me up here?
  8. Running XP Pro on a Dell laptop -- Pentium II @ 396mhz and 128 MB of RAM. It's used for the internet and Office. And AIM. And it's running SAV.
  9. BIOS settings look good. I tried replacing NTLDR using the recovery console, but it said the harddrive was not there. But when I switched the harddrive to the second IDE connection on the cable, it worked just fine. Ah yes, I keep meaning to run out to the store to buy a new cable. Thanks for reminding me! Also, I've also flashed the BIOS with the latest version, too -- no change.
  10. Ok, so about 3 years ago I built my own computer. About 6 months after I built it, I fried the motherboard and memory -- both were replaced under warranty. Fastforward to this year. I had two harddrives set up: the master on IDE1 being a 30GB Maxtor, and the slave being some extra Fujitsi (whatever it's called) 15GB drive I picked up somewhere, which only had music on it. Well, Windows XP starts mysteriously crashing for no obvious reason. I'd just be doing something on my computer, and then *POOF* it reboots. As soon as it rebooted and posted the POST info, it'd list my harddrive like !!!!!!!!!!!!Mactop!!!!!!!!!!! (yes, it was spelled wrong too), but the other one would be listed as normal. After it got down through that, it'd get the part where it'd look for a bootable CD, and if it didn't find one it'd load Windows XP. It didn't want to load Windows XP. Instead, it said "NTLDR missing" and would ask for me to load/check my system disk. I figured out that if I disconnected my slave harddrive, and connected the master harddrive to the second IDE connector on the cable (not the one on the very end, I'm talking about the connector in the middle) and turn my computer on, it'd work just fine and load into Windows XP. I've had that setup for the past month or so now -- with just the one master drive on IDE1. Well, last night I wanted to get some of the music off the Fujitsi harddrive, so I set it up as a slave and put it on IDE1. Now whenever I boot my computer, it says "CPU unworkable -- settings have been changed -- check CPU Soft Menu." What is that supposed to mean? Here's my setup: ABIT IS7-E Motherboard Intel Pentium IV 2.4B Ghz Kingston 512MB DDR400 (2x = 1GB, Dual Channel) Maxtor 30GB HDD Fujitsi 15GB HDD ATI Radeon 9200 128MB DDR AGP 8X Windows XP Pro I hope I explained this well enough -- let me know if you need anymore information!
  11. Boot from you XP CD, and try using the recovery console. I believe all it does it re-install the main XP files, but won't delete any of your word documents, installed programs, etc.
  12. Well, here's mine -- not much has changed... Visual Style - Metallic Shades v2 Wallpaper - Courtesy of NASA
  13. *Shoots Linksys router* /Dead /Buried I've noticed with my Netgear router that whenever I turn my computer on I don't get the "Acquiring Network Address" message anymore. Perhaps....who else said they had that "Acquiring Network Address" problem? Are you/were you by any chance using a Linksys router?
  14. Well, I flashed my Linksys WRT54G router with the 3rd party firmware, and it STILL kicks everyone off the network. Even after I reset the router and/or unplug the power then plug it back in, I STILL can't connect to the network. It's too late to exchange it for a Netgear router...
  15. No; AMD's Turion 64 does, though.
  16. Also wanted to say that Dell SUCKS when it comes to businesses, such as hospitals. A lot of schools use Dells, however. I'll ask my IT dept. to see how many times they have to fix those computers. It'd be interesting to learn.
  17. You won't be disappointed. The Pentium-M is based on the PIII core, and it actually does more per clock cycle than the P4 does, AND it stays waaaaay cooler and consumes much less energy (nearly one third less energy, I think, but don't take my word for it...) Anywho, I love the Pentium-M. If only Intel based their desktop processors off the Pentium-M, they'd be doing much better...
  18. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Riiiiiiiight...... Pentium-M pwns all!
  19. I think if you download Intel's graphics chipset drivers it comes with some utility that is very similar to ATI's control panel. I have it installed on the family Dell downstairs; like I said, it believe it functions in a way similar to the ATI control panel. Hope that helps!
  20. I bought a motherboard from ABIT, and nearly 6 months later it...died. I called their tech support, and the "tech" person could hardly speak english. While I listened, I could hear the person turning pages as they helped my "diagnose" my dead motherboard. When all else failed, they asked me if my toaster was plugged in...
  21. EVERY time I turn my computer on now, it says "Acquiring network address." Very strange!
  22. Does "The Recruit" count?
  23. This from CNN, concerning the new computer worm going around, brought to you by the 80's server: Man that's funny..."dweeb-toy."
