So you are saying for games 2k with SP4 is better in performance than XP? Any metric to prove that? Or is this just an educated guess. If you have more info let me know thanks.

Shows how much you know! Go out to any website where people are using Linux and you will find that they have components since pre-Pentium 2 days and they are running fine with drivers for Linux...Linux has overtaken and had overtaken hardware support over XP for a few years now! Where were you all this time? True being open source Linux does not have standard but only in terms of the DE development. Overall in the kernel area which is the crucial part there is a good organization with Linux heading it. I dont know if they can make something usable as OS X but I believe it could be just a matter of time. There are a lot of distros out there and so there is no lack of choice. If you want to build your system for optimum performance on scratch there is Gentoo, LFS, Slackware, Arch Linux and so on. If you want it to work right out of the box there is Ubuntu, Suse, RedHat and so on. As for the code verifier, I dont know where you got that information from but the reason why XP does nto crash as 98 did is because MS DID use an automated stress test tool. Given the size of the OS you really think people manage it without automated software stressing tools?

Is it a running process? If it is and if you dont want to use then uhh did you uninstall mcafee properly?

I thought all of MS software require activation and though yes it is annoynig as f*** I would still do it in a heartbeat because I know i am not doing anything illegal. Since DX is MS proprietary and almost 99% of good games are written using DX you are stuck using MS buddy. Linux has some attempts at having an emulator running the games but it is horrible at the moment and though it might get better in the future, it still wont be worth it. Stick to activating XP and all will be well.

Linux aint like dos man! True linux is hard as heck to setup right but its only hard the first time. there is an excellent community and excellent documentation. But yes the lack of user friendliness and softwares mainly games is the worst part of having a Linux box! And MS has not f***ed up this time because this is sort of an isolated incident and I am sure MS does not have every possible hardware and software configuration out there in their testing labs. I have not heard of anyone yet of having any issues as pointed out in the KB articles.

Floppy drives are like 10 bux! I always get one whenever I purchase a comp just in case! I mean I can always not use it or remove it but when I need it it can still be kind of handy for a very very few things....like booting in this example.

I cant wait for that shrunk down Windows to be running on almost all the machines we have at home!

Thanks got it to work.

Sweet I didnt know that. I will check it out. Thanks.

So if I understand you correctly, this bootloader is going to display on the screen the internal workings while the system is booting? Am I correct in understanding that? If I am then it is something that Linux has had for a while where you can see what is loading up and what isnt. Nice.

Wondering why you went with Intel looks like this will be clearly a gamig comp!!!! AMD would have been a better choice! I so regret having a 3.4 ghz intel....gets it a** handed to it in games and in scientific applications, media and so on!

Anyone got a link as to how to apply the theme?

the best reason for Vista, is simply because its up-to-date

gdogg that junk code analyzer you are talking about. I learnt about in in my software development class adn that was used in XP's development...mainly in the area of making sure XP does not crash because of some messed up 3rd party drivers to which Windows 98 was quite prone of doing. They are using the same idea but obviously with a lot more enhancements for Vista. When XP came out it was not mature and there was a time if you remember that people were practically having 2 kinds of software on their computer in equal amounts, malware and the OS. SP1 was of not much use but SP2 was quite a big jump. Vista for all we know from precedence could well be like that. We have no way of knowing for sure. I am personally seeing Vista to be another option if I ever intend to upgrade...a lot of people are still happy using Win 2k. I am most likely gonna be happy using XP Pro till however long the service lasts for support from MS or till I see there are genuinely a lot of benefits from switching to Vista. I hope that the latter happens! But if not, no sweat cause I got XP and I got Linux and I got Mac oS. 3 different machines running 3 different OSes. -
This just keeps getting better and better!
-
Hehe didnt know Nero 7 was out. And if you can invest in the highest rpm hdd that is possible depending on the type of hdd connection your mobo can take...that is after you upgrade the amount of RAM you got.

I dont understand why there is this pre-hatred for other OSes built into most computer users. I say use whatever that makes you comfortabe and lets you get the job done. Linux and OS X have a lot of strengths out of the box over XP but the biggest most overriding factor I think is the lack of a wide spectrum of softwares available unlike XP. Linux and OS X are very secure right out of the box. Linux is highly configurable since you can change your settings to the point that you can compile the kernel and even all the code you download for maximum throughput on your machine. And in Linux, you can be compiling your kernel, ripping a DVD, listening to music, surfing the web and chat all at once and wont even notice a bit of slowdown on your computer. OS X is just Unix for the masses. It has a lot of great features and so on but IMO it is poorly written since it feels like a slug whenever I have used it but other than that it is quite innovative and Apple is constantly striving to make it better. We can expect to see quite a boost maybe after they switch their OS to run on Yonah, Conroe, Merom processors upcoming from Intel. That should definitely be something to watch out for. XP. Well unless there were brilliant 3rd party community projects as seen here at msfn, I think a lot more people would have been unhappy. But nLite and Mindows and MicrowinX are just awesome projects that bring to us the ability to configure the OS and throw away what we really dont want! It could well end up being the most resource free and fastest OS than either Linux or Mac could achieve! What my point of this post is, instead of dissing other OSes we should try to just find out what gives us the best experience. Thats all. If Vista floats someones boat then great...there is talk about the Google OS but I think it is going to be Solaris based...anyway enough typing...see ya later fellas. -
As far as I remember the last time I had installed this theme it was a slight bit of a hack to get it to work for XP. Is that correct or did MS release an official upgrade for XP?
-
Hey maybe to go easier on your inbox, how about you just give the msfn people here some updates as to what the status os on your project once in a while? Perhaps then people will stop emailing you that much! haha

First and foremost I would invest in more RAM. And if Linux were as flexible as XP is when it comes to having a lot of software, I would run Linux. But since you are running XP you should get more memory, and if you are running dvds and ripping a lot on this machine, well then I think upgrade of your proc would be in order. I am sorry to say this but I dont think your comp will be much up to par...I mean what do you really intend to do with this? It is not going to be powerful enough to rip DVDs or encode and so on....

Drivers driving you mad in XP 64?
-
Well if you are that worried about memory being used up then go and get the omegadrivers instead of ATIs stock drivers. You dont need CCC to get all the features in the omega driver sets. Saves room on your hdd and in your RAM as well.
