  1. I still can't figure out why, in 2010, poeple are still programing scripts in DOS while VBScript exists. VBScript would handle your comandline and your short/long file names in two lines, if it's even necessary at all.
  2. too late but I write anyway, if it's a modem you culd have looked at generic modem drivers.
  3. I would try with the standard "[PCMCIA socket]" for the "PCI Serial Controller", assuming you can find your way to the list of generic drivers proposed by w98. Or any other generic controler that you can find on the internet for w98 and closer to "PCI Serial Controller" properly speaking. (Honestly I don't know if they are the same things) For the "Unkown device", you will be hard pressed to find out what it is, since it's unkown. :?
  4. So to avoid that I added quadruple quote marks.: WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell").Run "C:\TEMP\TMP.BAT """ & WScript.Arguments(0) & """", 1, FALSENote that through file association, it will starts one instance of vbs/bat (or whatever you use) file for each file selected in explorer. This forbid batch processsing in a single process and will pop up a hell of lot of dos prompts if you select many files at once. So this is a solution to use with one file at a time only, no matter the way you cut it. The ONLY solution for that (I'v been searching that very deeply) is to use my Context Menu Customizer Hta (coming with a special "Launch Script" feature) together with (or using separately if you don't want to use my Context Menu Customizer) Fast Explorer. Both apps are freeware. HTH
  5. I stopped using printers at home because I was fed up to buy a new cartridge everytime I have to print two pages of text. For some reason I never found my printer with not empty cartridges in it. It now costs me a fraction of the money and the time to go to the copyshop downtown.
  6. FTP is as easy as copy-pasting files between two folders on your local hard drive. I never used FrontPage extentions: Isn't it an FTP function included in FrontPage or is it another technology?
  7. I don't understand: On a Send To folder or file association, the parameter for the file path iis %1 or "%1" (with quotes) or again %1 %. One of these variant should give the LFN. My Context Menu Customizer Hta or Fast Explorer might be of interrest, thought not directly offering a solution to this very problem.
  8. NOTE/EDITUM: I'll have to redo the check on the last april 2010 updates
  9. Hi, can anybody tell me what IEXPRESS is? Is it an essential update or a separate program? Thanks. _________ The Post uSP3 updates depository webpage have been updated with the last entries as of 24th of april 2010 (http://www.htasoft.com/w98se_post_usp4.php)

  11. You may want to look for WMI for w98 (Windows Management and Instrumentation). This is the set of services you are talking about. I know it exists but I don't know where. Possibly it must be on MDGx.com few of use uses it because it has little use beside softwares using these services specificaly. Which program are you talking about?
  12. Thanks Vince. I added a link to this post on my website. NT OSes are technicaly superior to W98, that's undisputable fact. However w98 beats anything else in term of concept for a single user/home PC. What we (happy w9x users) are interrested in is the concept of simplicity (installation and fixes nothwithstanding LOL), control over system files, flexibility and of no-garbage OS. Technicaly it's increasingly a headache to get the drivers and software compatibility, but at the end of the day, it's such a pleasure to use. You are right that's sort of a hobby (thought a useful one, e.g. gain in productivity) because it would be much easier to crank up whatever version since XP. And we all run w98 on XP-capable computers.
  13. Yes' date=' but it has limitations. depends what you want to do. Yes. Suffices to learn how. When I started I had zero knowledge in programing. Google "vbs tutorial". Vbs is easy to start with. There are plenty of tutorials around.
  14. Problemchyld, I'll look closely at this list once I have time. Dencorso, SCR579X.EXE (last version) is safe for what we know, but indeed not an important update. Wether it can be removed or left is still debatable. About any update, I'm sure that few of them could cause any problem. But what I can do is to add clearly that poeple should read the infos files before installing. Using a php script and txt files make the list and info updates very easy and fast. I don't need to edit any htm page to do so. If some well known member is interrested, I could even give an acces to let him upload files directly. Triger49, the list of relevant discussion came naturaly as I built the page. Do you have a link to Tihiy's SafeMode fix? It's something that evaded me too. Everybody can suggest links or files to add. Moreover such page could be done for parallel projects such as Autopatcher for W98SE and Maximus Decim Cumulative Update. Then finaly see which update pack is best or fit better personal needs. For the moment it's intended for thos who use uSP.
  15. There is a secret the n00bs never know: It's spelled with three magic letters: FTP Once you get a FTP access (just look at your webhosting parameters) and installed a FTP software (just pick one of the gagizillion available for free) everything is much simplier, faster and easier than .com based editors.
  16. IMO, security is not that much connect to the OS. Every OS can be a virus Petri box as it can be unattackable depending on the configuration. What's worse about security is the last fashions of the all-internet stuffs which often require dangerous relaxations of safety measures and added software which can be exploited. Like Firwall exceptions, autoupdates, sharing access etc. Digital video has been completely overtaken by the YouTube format. This alone is a safety breach because it forces you to enable activeX. If poeple could live without activeX (and be able to watch movies without it), the world of PC would be much safer already.
  17. It's interresting that more than one of these specialists told "simplify, simplify simplify", make it simplier to use, simplier in the code, simplier in its structure, simplier at every level. That means in practice lighter, leaner, faster etc. Many also said that the tough-screen and portable device will bring a new revolution in how windows is designed. I'd nuance that. Content and inevitably applications must be adapted to specific devices, but the OS is only there as an invisible platform. The touch screen, for example is not that far from a mouse. A palm-style device is only a screen with a smaller resolution and smaller HD etc. Poeple who think that mouse and keyboard will disapear are wrong. IMO nothing fundamentaly different between Windows 3.1 and the last multimedia phone OS. But it's here that simplification and unbloating, starting from top bloat Vista down, become important. I disagree with those who think that the next big thing is the all-internet based environement, that software will have to be ultimately online. While that might be true for Google stuffs since Google is at the start an internet based service, it may not be true for Microsoft. Windows is a Hard Drive based platform, making it internet based would mean a totaly different product, Microsft is not specialized in. Technicaly internet based softwares are much less efficient, and open the door to thousands of hacker tricks. I also don't see the point of running legacy software in a sandbox, or under special mode. To strip out old APIs, they'd better find which APIs are the least used and eliminate them. I'd bet that hundreds of API's are never called in any program ever, simply because they are unkown from the developers. It doesn't mean that the oldest are the most obsolete. Like it or not, backward compatibility is key. Poeple will never buy an OS if they can't run their 10 years old software on it. It's up to the 10 years old software to be updated or for the market to offer equivalent alternatives. But MS can't remove 10 years old or 20 years old APIs just because they are old.
  18. Yup! Please note that this is not a discussion on what should be added to uSP3 but on what should be added on this webpage. All the updates there should be installed after installing uSP3 of course.
  19. I listed (most of) the updates for Windows 98SE (english) released or not included in the Gape's uSP3 - beta 4: Post Unofficial Service Pack 3-b4 Updates This page provides direct download links and info files. If there is some file to add or to remove, please write it here. All suggestions are welcome.
  20. If I don't turn off scripts, the pages take ages to display, sometimes freezing my computer for how long it will take. More and more websites make use of such scripts. Do you have the same problem?
  21. sp193: This is a minor cosmetic bug and can be ignored.
  22. You may want to try Code Stuff Starter or similar software showing what's not showing in MSconfig.
