  1. Does this applies to *ALL* USB devices or only to mass storage USB devices? I have a couple of items like a drawing tablet which are not used to store datas on it. °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
  2. _____________PROBLEMCHYLD, Did you also fix the (potential) problem with usbstor.sys? (see Duffy's post above) ____________________________
  3. Do you have a better one? 64 bit OS was the first important developement since coming from Dos to Windows. And I remember that when 64bit came out, there was a while when poeple wondered whether it's worth it ot not.
  4. I added some extensive "disclaimer" and other important notice on the website. This for new users. (Those of you who know what U98sesp is don't need to read it.) I hope to re-enable direct download soon. But I'm still thinking of a way to do it safely. _______________________________
  5. So as I understand you didn't experience a hard drive failure or a boot failure (I mean at a stage when you don't even have access to a dos console) as this angry guy claimed. Am I right? _________________________________
  6. Loblo, you don't need a no-javascript browser like Dillo or another not bad, OffBy1. If you disable script from the browser it has the same effect. I have Kmeleon 5.x installed as an alternative browser when a website refuses to show up with Maxthon(IE 6 interface). (I still use Maxthon+IE6 despite increasing failures on famous websites because I'm used to it, have no time to change my habit right now, and use two or three plugins which would take a lot of time to port to a FF based browser) It seems that it's not this or this browser that is better to render most pages, it's that webmasters accept anything but IE6 (or IE6 core based) browsers. One good way to kill scripts (when not disabled entirely) is to keep your mouse on the red cross button (the buton to stop loading the page). When you see that the main content of the page is on the screen, press quickely multiple times on the stop button. You need to press as many times as possible during 2 or 3 seconds and the scripts will stop. Your clicking on stop will take effect during the fraction of a second a script has not made your entire resources too busy. It's a race against the script if you will. it won't work on scripts programmed to run at intervals or on on-click events but most of them will be killed this way because some scripts may haven't been downloaded at all. It doesn't only stop scripts, it also prevent them to be downloaded. This oblige you to watch and control evey page loading. You can't load multiple pages in the background. You need to control every tab one by one. But it's worth it. I do it on Facebook for example. To download multiple tabs in the background, disable script completely especialy if you open pages from diferent domains.
  7. Fascinating read indeed. At least we have the satisfaction, we who are sticking to w9x against all the ires and reprobation of webmasters, programmers and post WindowsXP fans, to remember that there was something *before* w9x. w3.1 is our ancestor. A symbol of the w9x simplicity (even if it was useless). Something like a cult item. LOL. I was interrested to read that w3.1 was mostly useless because there weren't enough apps designed for windows. It's like 64bit apps today. Two years after 64bit windows version it's unclear whether you need it, and what's the advantage of it. We are still far from 100% 64 bit computers. But we will come to it eventualy as we came to full windows app computers in the years to Y2K. I'm sure that if we put as much effort to upgrade w3.1 as we put on w9x, we could have a suprisingly fonctional platform. When was the last w3.1 service pack issued? __________________________________
  8. Duffy, So according to you, it's NUSB the culprit. But can it prevent window to load, or even crash a HD? IFAIK in case of bad drivers windows let you the choice of booting in DOS mode or restart in safe mode. Such issue shouldn't compell you to reformat. Since this guy didn't bother to reply my last e-mail, I don;t think it's important for him. But I think it may be important for us to know all the known risks. ________________________________
  9. I'v got an e-mail a few days ago from an angry person who claimed that U98SESP3.EXE "fried" his hard drive [sic] and that he had to repartition and reinstall windows. But he didn't want to send more information when I asked him. I'm very surprised. IMO, only a corrupted or uncompatible version of IO.SYS could do that. But that update has been used for more than one year on dozen if not hundreds of machines. What's the odds that U98SESP3.EXE could make your HD unbootable? That seems very unlikely to me. BSOD, freeze, drivers errors, whatever,... but an invalid boot sector? _____________________________________
  10. Yes, why did I talk about WMI, if we WIA was to subject? :dazed: Anyway, what's the difference between WIA and TWAIN? __________________
  11. WMI is almostuseless and nobody ever asked for it for w9x. It would allow some vbscripts writen with WMI commands to work on w9x, but who use vbs? It would also open the door to WMI based viruses.
  12. Hello all! I regret to say that I'm not allowed by the web host company to distribute U98SESP3 until the 6th of april, next month. Eventhough there are no attack on my website anymore and that they understood perfectly that it was an attack. They have strict guidelines with customers. As soon as I have time I'll try another location and perhaps a safer way. I'm not short of resources. Just be patient cuz I'm a little bit busy at the moment. I hope mediafire will do the job in the meantime... Best Regards to all _____________________
  13. Dave-H, Thanks for asking them to review my site safety ranking! But if it can tell such a thing about my website, it means their detection process is not very intelligent. Or it should warn about any website from where you can download an executable. _________________
  14. Try Aviutl http://spring-fragrance.mints.ne.jp/aviutl AviUtl Tips and Tricks in english here: http://www.htasoft.com/aviutl/aviutl.htm Note that on my website external links (eg. rurirui.zone etc) are not available anymore. I did these webpage some 10 years ago... I need to update somehow... Now, why do you need a video editor to edit an dll, for god sake? Just curious...
  15. It's absolutely incredible, it's the first time since I'm active on the internet that something like that happened to me. I have informed the web hosting company. I'm hopeful the U98SESP3.EXE will be available soon again. Note that the hacker didn't succeed in shuting the website down. www.htasoft.com is still accessible and always was. It's only U98SESP3.EXE which was made unavailable by my own decision. __________________________________
  16. ****************************** U98SESP3.EXE has been under attack! ****************************** Someone downloaded the file 15758 times in three days effectively exhausting the bandwith available. I'm taking care of this issue. _______________________
  17. Difficulties on the internet didn't appeared because w9x is old, but because webmasters abandonned all good practice guidelines that makes the web universal and accessible to everyone. And they multiplie bad practices. 1/ Javascript generated content. Some webpages won't show anything when javascript is turned off. The fact is that absent of Javascript meddling old browsers do just fine. Recently they had in their mind that you should't see an e-mail address without Javascript. As if robots and spammers were not able to use Javascript to see them. I guess this measure is already ineffective as we speak. 2/ Flash. This is the worse thing that happened to the internet. Many websites starts with a nice flash intro. Ok, it's fine for the webmaster hubris and the glorification of the website owner. But people don't come to watch animations. This is not a problem when it's possible to bypass it. But some website will display "Get Flash plugin" and nothing else. And there is nothing you can do to enter the website! 3/ Abuse of the "div" tag. New css code, unsuported by old browsers, may cause some content to be hiden. This is rare thought unless they realy bloat up the webpage with dozen of "div" tags. 4/ Webmasters are addicted to complication. It's very easy to make a nice looking website, but they always want to add tons of javascript (most of which was not coded by them), totaly useless, just for the sake of being there. The most common is the Google map code, while a simple link to Google map with the keyword in it would do just fine. ______________
  18. Please don't download the service pack now. w98's uSP file downloads will be suspended until 9th of March 2012 We are running out of bandwith! PROBLEMCHYLD don't update the files in the next 3 days! I hope that later everything will be all right. Sorry for the inconveniance. _____________________________
  19. Maybe it's simply due to the JPG compression level the of the new image which is different in w98 and XP?
  20. Too Cool! 8) 8) This is an option to add to my Context Menu Customizer! (when I'll have time} Don't you know the way to modify the context menu of the desktop? In fact you cold lauch all kinds of programs like that. One can imagine an empty, icon free, desktop where you have to right-click to launch programs off the context menu. Or, less radicaly but still, items in the context menu which will change the content of the desktop according to your preference of the moment. Possibilities are without limit! __________________________
  21. I'm using a 128 Mb Ramdisk for ages now. I can't compare the speeds, because HDD are so fast, but anyway it makes sens to put all temporary datas and make all useless operation requiring to write on disk on a ramdisk in order to spare HDD resource availability and longevity. The more you use the Ramdisk the longer your HDD will last. Here again I have no scientific comparison to support that but it's logical. There are so many actions that put garbage on your HDD that it makes sens to put all of them on a temporary Ramdisk. I set all the "temp" files and folders on the Ramdisk. I'm also using the Ramdisk for the IE cache (temporary internet files). As for reading videos, it's certainly a little bit faster than HDD but I doubt it would make a noticeable difference unless your HDD is old. At 5200 rpm, it should make no difference unless the HDD is busy doing something else, which is also a good reason to use a Ramdisk. The other problem with Ramdisk is that it's erased everytime you turn off the computer. So any video to be played off the Ramdisk, will have to be copied first from the HDD to the Ramdisk. And this will take a lot of time. Unless it's a video meant to be replayed many times during a single session, this is not an efficient solution. One can imagine using Ramdisk to loop-play adds on screen in a shop, or to replay endlessly your favorite music (meditation mantra would be perfect for that usage -LOL-) Some members here use the Ramdisk as a location for the swap files (which fills when the ram memory is full). This useful only when the physical memory available exceeds what is supported by Windows 98, even patched, and when the Ramdisk is large enough for that purpose. Idealy, one could think of a setup where all files and temp files which has to be constantly rewritten by the system itself (eg: user.dat) are located on a Ramdrive. Not running windows off the Ramdisk, but copying and using all files to be often modified there. That way you could work with drive C on iddle mode. Imagine the disk usage saving! But I don't know if it's possible. Nice testing experience here!
  22. For 2012, I'd like a very simple thing (maybe it's possible already): To suppress the Safe Mode message box. When it restarts in Safe Mode it always shows a useless message box, before loading the desktop. It's a loss of time. We all know when it's in Safe Mode! __________________
  23. Glad to see that the "website" gets updated here and then! Keep the good work, Prob! __________________
  24. I'll keep the list updated on the top of the trhead. Let's hope that there will be more entries because 3 out of 7 are applications, not realy system updates. But it's a good start! _______________________________
