Installed Files Checker 4.8 Homepage - more infos Direct download New version! Yes, I'm still working on this project bringing improvement everytime! 4.8 -Fixed unability to check files when the DOS version is changed (w98) and the DIR command gives a different output. (A rare occurence but it happens more often than I thought.) -Improved: lower risk of false modified or missing/added couples in normal times thanks to the fix above. -Added buttons "See Archives" and "Setings" -
I followed your advice ASAP because I had another crash the other day. The geek at the store's backroom did a clone of my HDD to a new one. + he cleaned the dust off the MoBo because my computer is in a very smoky environement in winter(while I'm in another room). I'm now up and going again. Time will tell. The HDD was only 3 and 1/2 years old, a Western Digital. Wierd. But ok, I'm not going to complain

No AV, no FireWall, not even Spybot S&D or similar. No software to protect my computer at all! It's been years I don't use them anymore and I'v never been infected. (It's still possible that a virus came and crashed instantly but I don't think so). However I disable many things that was designed by Microsoft to allow viruses to penetrate and propagate into a computer: 1/ ActiveX. With the help of Maxthon I dosable this, but that can be done in K-Meleon or another w9x compatible browser. The downside of it is that it disable YouTube and flv videos. So I re-activate it when I realy want to watch a video in the YouTube format, and only on very well-known websites and only on the tab and for the session where I want to watch this video. 2/ Javascript. On dangerous or very-dangerous websites (I do go to such websites sometimes) I completely disable javascript. While I think that disabling ActiveX is enough safe, disabling Javascript is even better psychologicaly. I also disable javascript to increase speed. 3/ e-mail HTML. In Outlook Express I read all my e-mail as plain text. No HTML for me in my input box, even when the message is unreadable. Poeple have to send me pure text if they want an answer. 4/ Windows Media Player. I don't use it because it has features to download and install stuffs. This was exploited in the past on various platforms. 5/ Auto Insert Notification. That thing that pops up and run the virus installed on a CD. Even when there is no virus it's so annoying that you want it disabled. 6/ Spam. My service provider is effective in filtering span and I edited over the years good spam filtering rules. And of course suspicious attachements are immediately deleted. But that goes without saying. When spam are automaticaly deleted from the server they don't even touch your computer. That alone must stop a bunch of viruses IMO. Probably I forgot other stuffs... I don't consider myself as being safe by the use I do with my computer, yet it's been ages since I have seen a virus here.

So you think the heads are scratching the platters while hovering above the area related to partition C?

Oooops! My computer had another freeze up the other day and the same problem came back... even worse! First I wasn't able to turn on my computer again: no scandisk, nothing, just a bunch of errors, windows protection error and the likes. Press any key to continue had the power turned off. Yeah... That's not all: It took me 3 boot floppy disks to have one working. One generated a string of errors, the other failed to see the drive C:. Finaly the ME boot disk was successful in launching scandisk. The first time I had this problem, scandisk found one bad cluster. Now it found 6 additional bad clusters in random files. It's wierd that files which were not written or read during the crash are suddenly corrupted. Important: When the crash happened, in both case there was extensive work on the E: partition of the same physical drive. This drive has the partition E: and C: on it. D: being on a separate physical drive. On both cases I was working with large files (more than 100Mb) but with other applications, not related to each others. The first time it was during a recording and editing session with Audacity, the second time it was after downloading movies with WinSCP (an HTP clients) and watching these movies with MP Classic + ffdshow. Nothing extraordinary. I do these types of operation for years without problem. Yesterday I watched these movies without problem. Normaly these softwares don't cause me any worry. I'm afraid my hard disk drive is about to die. It's wierd to have bad cluster poping up on drive C: while working on drive E:... Or can it be another problem?

Absolutely. Windows is for enternaiment devices only. As soon as you need something reliable, safe or industrial you don't use any such bloated OS.

On my website (www.htasoft.com) you will find an hta application designed to easily add context menus. Fast Explorer (which I use) is essential for dealing with multiple files at once (along with other less essential albeit cool stuffs).

Disabling "everything" in msconfig definetly evacuates 95% of the problems you may get with a corrupt or inadequate installation. Not as minimal as Safe Mode thought.

Unofficial ClamWin patch for Win98SE

yes, very cool. Thanks. -

Shell98 is part of the Unofficial Service Pack 3 beta 4 which I strongly recommand for those who still didn't updated their system. http://www.htasoft.com/w98se_post_usp4.php BTW xplorer2 free doesn't have this problem, even without patch.

HI, everybody. So I ran the surface scan to the insistance of both the public audiance (here) and of my computer who would never let me in peace. ...And it happens that I had one bad sector on the C disk. Fortunately it didn't scan the entire physical drive of 500Gb, only the relatively small C partition. On top of that the file affected was cookies.dat, something likely to be used often and generate errors. Lesson learned: Believe what your computer is telling you. It's the first time I'v got the case due to a not-clean shut down. The not-clean shut down may have been caused by a read/write error that crashed the computer but that's impossible to know. I don't know what's the risk of damaging a HDD doing so. Perhaps it's not null. In my case not-clean shut down doesn't cause definetly a scan disk. Sometimes it reboots in Safe Mode, sometimes it does the disc scan (which I abort almost everytime), sometimes it even reboots normaly. There are various reasons why I must do a not-clean shut down. Most of the time it's because the computer fails to shut down at some point. It often (but not always) fails to shut down when it shows the shut-down logo with the sky (in normal shut down I don't even see this sky). Sometimes the computer fails to start, showing a black screen with an unanimated cursor, some bits of white should I say on the top left. Then Ctrl+Alt+Del may or may not work, it's up to good luck. The reasons for these annoyances are completely unkown. I have not the slightliest idea of what can cause them but random computer imprecision. My mohterboard, which should be called grand-mother-board LOL, is quiet old. I had it cleaned completely already once after a total start failure of the machine. Looks terrible when you read that but I'm still very satisfied of the machine... most of the time it works perfectly, making such hic-up even more surprising.

After several crashes with Audacity which forced me to pull off the power plug off the computer because it became completely frozen (extremely rare but it happens) I started experiencing the "not properly shut down" warning at every reboot. Not only it wants to scan disc C, D and E, but also starts with surface scan. 500 Gb of surface scan, he must be kidding. I don't want to wait 3 days before he's done. The first time the problem appeared I had a problem with WININET.dll (stack error). Why would WININET.dll make an error, I have no idea. The computer was near to unusable because this error kept on appearing every 5 seconds or so and the computer was extremely busy all the time. Fortunately I succeeded in fixed that by restarting in DOS mode and using the command "SCANREG /RESTORE". (I wrote this command with a marker on my monitor frame because it's so useful, just next the alt+0128 for the euro symbol.) That was fixed but the SCANDISK continue to start at every reboot eventhought the computer works normaly and is shut down in the proper way. I don't know how to tell him to stop that. I ran the normal dos scandisk and the windows scandisk both once and the problem is still there.

Are you sure that you use Yahoo! Mail Classic? It works even with javascript disabled.

Still very concerned about IPV6 issue!
Fredledingue replied to cyberformer's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
They should delete the ip4 addresses which are no longer in use and 2/3 of them will be freed. -
YouYou can choose to restart later and run several updates before rebooting. Also check my website under my signature, useful to avoid updates redundants with usp3.

It's possible that the setting for the location of the swap file has been modified resulting in the creation of a 2d swp file elsewhere.

Windows, not only Explorer but all applications using file icons (eg: Explorer replacements) is always reading the metatags in html files to see which editor was used to create this file and adapt the icon accordingly. Example: <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0"> IMO this is a waste of processor cicles and of hard disk spins. Everytime you open a folder with html files in it Windows read all these files and think about which icon should be displayed for each file individualy. For the user it's confusing because it looks like these files are of different types. But my goal is to increase efficiency. How do I disable this?

Registry keys that control explorer folder-view options

I would even say to create a "small" partition for Windows and program files and perhaps current documents. Something between 20 and 50Gb, and the rest of the HDD another partition for voluminous files. As far as the installation order goes it seems ok to me too. There are so many things to do that it's too long to list them all here, especialy since they have been mentioned here many times already. One day I posted a bat script for the famous first reboot fix and I forgot where it is now on thsi forum. I install windows 98 only once every 4 years or so, so... But we are never short of new informations. There are about 4 or 5 w98se upgrade packs all of them ,forcibly ,older than another at some point in time. IMO it's not necessary to install them all. On top of uSP3-beta4, I'd take the most recent one (with caution). Or to install updates posted by MGDx individualy, they are also available on my website (see signature). Once the most important updates and fixes are installed it's not necessary to be perfectionist.

Awsome stuff. 8) I'm going to check its content against that of uSP3 and perhaps make a webpage similar to theW98SE Post uSP3 Updates with WUPG98. Question: Is the installation customizable or does it install everything at once without asking?
