  1. w98 comes with a CD. But I don't know where it can be downloaded. Sorry.
  2. I'm not sure about the limitations of these softwares but I remember that for their DOS versions, they are pretty high. You should ask MDGx about that. He knows better than me.
  3. Looks like the cd drive is broken. This could freeze a machine if there is a cd in it. Beside that, I'd start by disabling and uninstalling all non-essential softwares, reinstalling windows and then applying the updates available here.
  4. duffy, DOS drivers make sens only if you want to use them in plain DOS mode, I mean after restarting in DOS mode. Because when windows is loaded, you better use windows apps. To avoid interference between windows and DOS do not include driver loading command in autoexec.bat, but include them in dosstart.bat (which may have to be created). Dosstart.bat executes only in DOS mode. The advanatage of DOS mode is that you have access to your computer without starting windows and as such it's a unique repair tool. It allows for example to copy and replace files which can't be replaced or deleted when windows is running. It also ensure that your machine is perfectly idle at the time you do the repair. Windows XP and Vista don't have DOS mode, they only have a DOS console useable when windows is running. This handicap prevent the use of plain DOS mode for repairing the system as in w9x. Vista has even a funny fake Restart in DOS mode option where it will open a nearly full screen DOS console on top of the windows'desktop. Which is perfectly useless. From a user point of view, The XP/Vista DOS console is not very different from a DOS console in w98. HTH
  5. The limit for DOS fdisk is 1 or 2 Tb.
  6. I beg to disagree. There may be some issues when using huge files < 2GB, or files between 2-4GB with the 4GB file-size patch.Under Win98SE on my desktop, which has 2GB RAM installed, I have set the swap file to 3888 MB fixed (Minimum=Maximum), just to be on the safe side when handling huge files. Ok. How often do you manipulate files larger than 2 Gb? Never happened to me.
  7. Original non-patched non-png-fix IE6 (and IE5) always could render png files. wsxedcrfv told us himself in his original post. The only prob was to get another or any software associated with them so that he can double-click on them and see them this way.
  8. Unless you are using behemoth applications from famous graphic software vendors (which won't install or would crash on ME anyway), or very poorly designed ones, you will practicaly never make use of swap file again with 1Gb of memory. So I don't think it's that important, one setting or another given that both work. This of course if you have set ME properly to work with that amount of ram. There is no vast improvement in speed. The major advantage of more memory is stability.
  9. Yes using RapidShare is not the best when we have internet issues!! uSP3.0 makes 20Mb and MDCU makes 14 Mb. So they must be gotten in a matter of minutes. You will find both in direct download on this page: http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php#012910 But in this state of affair I'd recommand downloading from another computer, then transfering the files via CD-r or USB. Another thing that puzzles me: You are talking of an "Allow" list. No such a thng on w98. Unless you are talking of a firewall which would explain a lot of things. If you have a firewall or an antivirus installed, they may proceed to download and install automatic updates non compatible with w98 and messing up with your computer. Just an idea. The other ideas posted above are also good ones. We definetly need more infos (more than you trying to reboot x times).
  10. Dencorso, if the cd image makes more than 650 Mb, you are still stuck with one time cd-r. Triger, the mad snowplower and his crow will push the snow back faster than you can shovel it!
  11. MS won't send you a w98 cd since it ended support and since you don't have a purchase agreement with them. But you can still look for someone who has an old w98SE cd (with serial number) in their attic. When you get a *new* cd the best is to reformat disc C: and reinstall completely on this disc and then (re)install the updates. In the meantime you can install uSP3.0, IE6.1 and MDCU (IE6 updates) (see links above). Then download and install flash 9.0 - Flash 9.0.260 32-bit Web Player + Plug-ins for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME + Microsoft 32-bit browsers [1.46 MB]. direct download This should fix your issue with Graiglist and so on.
  12. If it's only for one or two times, the best way is still to burn the cue file and get it away with the cd. But yes it's silly to put everything in a single file. Sometimes one shouldn't try to understand what they have in mind.
  13. I would restore that back up from last time it worked. But without the possibility to reinstall windows you system will degrade of the years no matter what. When you can get your system to work, after you restored, downolad and install uSP 3.0 and MDCU for IE6. Install IE6 if not yet installed. Also have a look here. Theses updates found on this list are trustworthy. HTH
  14. You can be glad if you can already find such thing non-free and for XP and above only.
  15. Most (free) picture viewers support png files. To associate png files with your viewer of choice open Explorer "View" --> "Folder Option" --> "File type" then select the file type for png, if not there, press "New type", under "New Action" type "Open" and enter the path of the application underneath. etc. If you need more details about this procedure, we'll help. HTH
  16. No, these pictures are examples I found at random on the internet. My multi-card reader is this one: It has 5 slots and seems to accept cards of 10 different shapes and countless sub-formats. It's nothing extraordinary since other multi-card readers I have seen at the stores have the same specifications and suport the same number of card formats. I bought it for 10 €. Anyway we are likely to use the 2 or 3 most popular ones so I don't think you miss something with only 4 slots. Because all these devices are standardized (many coming from the same factory in China with another design under another brand), generic drivers are likely to work on most of them now and in the future.
  17. Here is the link where I found the small pack with the three files: http://www.chronos.com.tw/drivers/CardReader/Cardreder.htm direct download: 6in1win98.zip(13KB)
  18. I'm almost willing to post that observation to the uTorrent user forum to test for responses. But my flame suit is at the cleaners right now... I would be also surprised that the top #1 torrent client had such huge issue unfixed by now...
  19. Obviously there are several ways to solve this problem. Perhaps had I replaced usbstor.inf, it would have solved the problem. Perhaps I didn't need a 7.5Mb pack. Perhaps 3 small files (usbcrdrv.inf, usbcrdrv.sys and usbstor.pdr) from a zip file found during my search (Link) would suffice. But I decided to give a try to the 7.5 Mb installer. It enumerates the card drives from I through M. I never been that high in the alphabet!
  20. I'm afraid a "Smart Card" driver can't be used as a "Multi Card" driver. (Thought both may be useful they are different things). This is what I call a (all-in-1) multi card reader. and this is a smart card reader.
  21. Prozactive: "Some reason" must be the only known reason why my computer doesn't want to use other than 4.10.2222. Because thoericaly it should. Albeit rare, I'm not the only one. I have seen at least one case like me here.
  22. I found this generic driver for multi card reader. When I first plugged my new USB multi card reader, windows failed to properly install the driver. The device was seen by the system but the driver could not be loaded. I hoped NUSB would do the job as it did usualy so well but this time it didn't. So I looked for something else and I found this. USB all-in-1 card reader, Direct download: driver.zip (7.5 Mb) Driver page index/website: Drivers index You will find there other versions available -mostly w98 compatible- as well as other drivers. (IMO this site may be interresting.) Here is how to proceed: 1/ If you have tried to install a driver for it unsuccessfuly, connect the card reader, wait a few seconds. Then go to "Control Panel" --> "System" --> "Device Manager". Remove the item listed as your card reader (possibly flagged with an exclamation mark). If you don't find it, go to "Control Panel" --> "Add/Remove Software" and remove what you have installed for this device if any. If you don't find anything there go to step 2. 2/ Unplug the card reader. 3/ Read the instructions in "Manual_for_English.exe" found in the zip package. Take note on a sheet of paper of when you will have to plug or unplug the card reader because this is very important. Failure to plug or unplug the device at the appropriate time will cause the installation to fail. 4/ Launch "setup.exe" and continue according to the instructions you have read in "Manual_for_English.exe". 5/ When it asks you to plug the card reader and wait for the driver to be installed, do it. If nothing happens after a few seconds, press "OK". 6/ After you pressed "OK", unplug the card reader. You must unplug the card reader before you click "Next" and before the computer restarts. 7/ Click "Next" and let the computer restart completely. 8/ When the computer has restarted completely (after the hourglass and everything), plug the card reader in and wait for the drivers to be installed. An installation progress bar should start automaticaly. 9/ If the installation is successful, you will see one new drive for each slot in the card reader. Albeit only the slot with a card in it will be accessible. At this time you can drag and drop contents with Explorer. Attention: This was tested only on my computer (as far as we are concerned) and there is no garantee whatsoever of usability on other machines. Always back up your system first. Proceed carefuly. Use at your own risk!
  23. Yeah, in the old time doing a picture larger than 640/480 was considered a big waste of HDD space and extremely long to process while editing.
  24. Prozactive: I had this annoyance: Control Panel -> System -> Performance tab displays "drive I is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system" and the copying/moving of files was very slow because of that. Note that I compare 4.10.2222 to 4.10.2225 and 4.10.2230. There is one day difference in their dates. Problemchild When you install w98 for the first time, at some point it will restart. Then you quickely press F8 or Ctrl to force it to restart in DOS mode. When in DOS mode you run this batch script assuming you have collected all the files necessary and put them in the same location as the batch script. 25. I use and love Xplorer2 too but I find it a bit slow to open. It often hangs a few seconds the time to update the icons or something... Beside that it's great and it solved the problem of moving/deleting large numbers of files long before a fix was issued.
