Can we have Another Notepad with SP2.0?
Fredledingue replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks! i choosed Metapad Works good. Only 95Kb extracted! But why did you include Notepad2, it was realy not the editor of choice... -
It's too early for me to notice any difference. My standard W98SE crashed "only" once in a few days. But it works fine so far except the specific issues I posted earlier.

I don't see what's more easy in XP... The average dude will switch on the PC and find a desktop with a few icons and a start button just like on W98. What's so easier about that? -

You think I'm a moron? I did these 2 tests on the same machine, both with completely reformated harddrive and fresh default install +Ms Office97. I opened a large doc file in Word and asked to change, for example white spaces, by "xxx".(That it's the kind of task, you excpect to do often and would want to do fast.) I did the test first on XPn then on W98SE, and also on the old computer also on W98SE. The I counted the time before the "100000 items replaced" poped pup. The new computer was 10x faster than the old one on W98 and only 7x faster on XP: difference 30%. You know with all the useless built in features, it's normal XP is slower... -

horsecharles Why would Longhorn make other OS obsolete? It's just the next version of XP after all... _______________________________________________ un4given1 Bill Gates' idea was to create a system that was user friendly from the moment you plug it in. You can turn this off, you know that right? No I can't turn it off, when I'm using someone else computer. This function is completely useless. Poeple lived very well until XP and always knew what to do when they inserted a CD. But it's just an example, XP is full of things like that that takes on your nerves. 27 layers? c:\documents and settings\username\my documents 1... 2... 3... You can even shorten it by using %USERPROFILE%\My Documents Besides... why not just click the link on your desktop, or in the start menu? Or, just redirect your My Documents. Oh, yeah, how easy! I didn't know that. There is so much more functionality built into Windows XP. I'm sure you will start by saying "Anything that's in Windows XP can be installed on Windows 98..." Yeah? Really? Remote Desktop (the server piece) . Sure, there are function in XP that doesn't exist in W98, and that I don't need. That's the point: XP is an OS that I don't need. I don't say nobody needs it. But most of single home or small business users don't need it. And what are these hiden XP magic? There is none. Show me proof of this? I think you have it all wrong. It's wellknown. It's all over the press. There never has been so many issues with XP as with W98. Because XP is server-friendly, it's also hacker-friendly. That's in XP why there is an inbedded firewall (that you need to switch off any time you install a software or do something special) and that's why I never installed a firewall on my W98. In most cases, Windows XP has drivers that are newer than the drivers you may have on your CDs. How that can be? On the contrary, XP has drivers that are older.. XP was released in 2002 if I remember, so all the XP drivers are obsolete for any hardware produced after XP relaese date. (unless they include them in the Service packs, which I doubt) Especialy when XP is usualy installed on new machine that has never seen W98. These default drivers is the most moronic things M$ has ever done. Every hardware manufacturer provide an installation CD with Adobe Acrobat Reader included. And if you lose the CD you can download the updated drivers from the manufacturer website. Yes, but I remember that it was a real pain in the a**, when we had to do it. We had to clic "no" when any n00b would clic "yes" out of fear. I'd bet millions of poeple have the basic XP driver installed instead of the ultra-cool hyper-tweaky drivers from the manufacturer althought they followed the instruction for a normal install. Do you realize how ignorant that sounds? You installed 3rd party software (which is freeware, as you said) and you say you have more functionality than XP? Well, yeah... But install those same "freeware" programs on Windows XP and what do you get? When I first tested XP, I hoped for some incredible apps, fully adapted to the system, but I found something almost like W98. except wery minor changed, Notepad is the same, IE the same, the right-click menu is the same, the desktop is the same, the taskbar is the same, etc only icons and windows skins are differents. So If need to install the same 3d party software as on W98, why do I need XP for? Of course I can't, XP looks so much like W98 once you selected "W98 style" appearance... B) Windows XP or Windows 98... I have a gig of RAM in my PC. Who cares about minimum requirements...Those who don't have 1Gb, or those who have an old colmputer: They can't install XP. But I wanted to say that the higer the min requirement, the weaker is the software. Hoo, yes they said that. XP was supposed to be the solution against W98 crashes... -
After I upgraded with SP2.0 Rc_french, I have two Volume icon in the taskbar. I think it's because I installed a french version while I had to instal an english version. (My windows version is english but it was set up with a french charcter set, so I thought I had to instal SP2.0RC_french.) Is there a simple method to have one little loudspeaker again?

Thanks for your replies. Does the SP upgrade support unitl 1Gb or limitless Gb? -
Notepad2 is very nice looking at, but when I open a file more than 30Kb, it lags terribly. It takes ages to load the file, and scrolling is very slow. The strange thing is that it doesn't happend when I open an htm file with it. But for editing code specific software such as Notepad++ are better. Notepad should for txt files basicaly. Now, I would like to know how to revert to normal Notepad without uninstalling the package...even if I havev to use wordpad for large files. It would be great to have something like the old Notepad but without the file size limitation. All the Notpad replacement I have seen so far offer too many features. Not easy for handy notes, copy-paste, temporary saving text, quick reading, etc

Yes, that's needed! Make some vulgarization too. Infos are good but sometimes hard to understand what in practice it means... I'm a geek, not a computer scientist!

I'm amlost sure that this mps.exe come from the motherboard installation. I should check this out seriousely. I don't see why a troyan would freeze my PC after messing up with SP2.0. Two confronting utilities doing the same job, mps and some SP2.0 tweak, could do that. Makes sens to me. New question: is there a CPU tweak included in the SP 2.0RC1b?

Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but does it mean that, after installing the SP 2.0 RCIb I can put 1Gb of ram in my computer and effectively use 1Gb (without modifying the ini file)? -
Ok, I have downloaded and installed the french update pack: 2.0RC1b It was not the language! + When I ran the install, I got dozen of warning reading "the language of this file is no that of w98 (or something of that effect) - do you want to keep the file (recommanded)" and "Your language: English U.S." Now, I remember, I have an english version with a french character set, but the messages boxes are in english. So, not only the english pack was the one I had to use, but now I have a system that talk to me one time in english, one time in french, depending if the file the message is from was replaced or not. Also my computer didn't freeze because of a language missmatch. A program called mps.exe (that I always had on my machine since day 1) is the cause. This is the data of the start up task displayed in CodeStuff Starter: [mps] [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mps.exe /s] [Registry - Machine Run] I don't know what this exe file is for. I think it's CPU monitoring utility that slow down the processor (to save power or whatever) when there is no demand for cpu usage. I'm not sure, but I think it's that. Before the upgrade, when I disabled this program, CodeStuff Starter displayed the CPU usage correctly, when msp.exe ran, it showed always 100%. Now I'm obliged to disable it...

Horsecharles, Flamish is same as Dutch (officialy). But yes, there is Dutch(Netherlands) and Dutch(Belgium) in the Windows'languages. Poeple will instinctively clic on their native country, but these differences are stupid since the alphabets are rigorousely the same.

Yes... M$ had better keep on improving W98. Instead they did ME which was worse (according to many of those who tried it) and XP which is an improvement of W2000. The proof is that 7 years later, there are poeple, unsatisfied with the new M$ products who strive to improve W98. But Bill Gate wanted to inaugurate the age when computers of tomorrow don't look like the computers we know today. A computer were one doesn't have to open files, make settings or install an hardware driver. The result is not only a hyper bloated software, but also more complicated and counter-effective in respect to the concept of the switch-and-go PC that they wanted to do. XP is also the perfect example of doing worse while wanting to do better. On W98 we have the goo' ol' "Find Files" utility with 2 boxes and one folder tree. That's what I call easy. Now with XP the "Find File" was replaced by 5 or 6 internet-lookin links, a maximized empty folder pane, 2 boxes and a dog. -
F8 key! I should have known that! Thanks Horsecharle! ___________________________ A suggestion for the final release: detect if windows is in english and if not, prevent the installation.

WebMatze Posted: Jan 26 2005, 09:08 AM I made a french version of the service pack 2.0 beta 3, you can find it on my website: Version française de W98 SP 2.0 RC1b http://www.webmatze.tk Cliquez >Traductions -> Système. Voir en bas de page. Yes, I hope I hope it will work with French(Belgium). If not I will reinstall with French(France). It's too stupid.

How do I restart in safe mode? I know what it is, but I never founf out how to intentionaly start in safe mode. I didn't know "ENGLISH" was so important. So now we will know that it's very dangerous to run the pack on non english platforms...

- XP is slower than W98SE. Thought the opinions differ on this, I made a test on both fresh default installs: replace with Word 100,000 characters by another: XP slower 30%...Also the way all the stuffs displays and open, even after choosing the "fastest" setings, it seems to lag more than on w98. (One vendor even told me that XP start to be interesting from 2000 GHz, you don't feel it's slower) Of course poeple say, hey this XP OS is realy fast! It's because it come with a new computer... - I hate the "What do you want to do (with this CD)? : Open in WMP, Connect to the internet, print the photos, take no action (and other realy stupid options)" box for which I always answer by "take no action". - I don't like the way "my document" folder is dug in under 27 layers of subfolders. I like "my document being in "C:". - XP or NT may be great for multi-users, especialy with non reliable users. But for my whife and me it's completely useless. - I don't like losing 2Gb (2.5 Gb for XP vs 0.5 Gb for 98) just for the XP logo. Of course, you will say that with a set of two 120 Gb drives it's not an issue anymore... I don't think so - A software as large as 2.5 Gb after install must have a serious conception problem... - XP is a real open door for hackers, viruses and spywares as far as I have read. It's only recently that M$ released some fix about that... - I'm realy lucky that my new video card driver was not compatible with XP. If yes I may have stayed with XP like all the n00bs. - On another computer (that had drivers adapted to XP) we had realy huge problem to install the good drivers because XP always installed its own drivers by default even after we inserted the manufacturer CD. In other words, we had to tell XP not to install bad drivers! -After all the freewares I installed on W98, I have all the tweaks and functionalities that I can dream of and most of them not available in XP. - XP require minimum 128 Mb, thought 256 Mb is recommanded. That means we lose how much in free memory? W98 min is 32Mb AFAIK. P4 1800Ghz ASUS V8200 deluxe 512 DDR 120 Mb + 40 Mb hard drives W98SE , MS office XP, about 100 other softwares installed. My whife has a laptop with XP and I'v been many times on various XP machines. I don't see any tremendous advantages over W98. -It's more stable but saying "XP never crashes" is wrong. I'v witnessed a BSOD on a fresh install right back from the computer shop... After all W98 is not as unstable as some poeple used to say. It's of course very easy to make a so-called stable OS when the minimum spec. must include 256 Mb of memory. I can return the question: Have you tested W98 on a modern computer (eg 2.4GHz, 512 DDR etc)? If not you should. -Defrag is faster. I don't think it's that important. I have even read that with today fast HD, you can live without ever defragmenting. -Cool skin. Well esthetic is important. But all XP I'v seen look the same. -XP is a gigantic media player that plays everything. That's also a rumor but it's true it's a gigantic media player. -
I have e-mail this problem to the author but it's enough important to be reposted here: I Installed W98SP2_sesp20rc1. (All the components except one, but I don't remember which one.) and I ran across a huge problem: I was not able to use my computer anymore!! After restart, the mouse was moving but I couldn't clic any icon, the keyboard was not working, thus no win-key and emergency restart possible. Nothing was working except the "reset" button on the computer case... I succeeded my way out by typing, after restart Ctrl+Alt+Del during the desktop start up, just after the green-blue desktop appear, just before the taskbar or the icon. Then in the "close program" dialog box" I canceled some tasks at random. By doing this 2 or 3 times, I succefuly made a working restarted environement . I let the 3 or 4 first task going on, but ended the next ones. Then I promptly reinserted my original W98SE installation disk and made a reinstall over. After the reinstallation, I had the compensation of finding TweakUI in the control panel... So I guess some of the stuff were installed moreles successfuly and my computer works fine. I did the upgrade on an old install and it was the first upgrade I ever did. I have French(Belgian) lnguage installed. I'v read that one must have the english version thought I wonder if it makes a difference concerning the total freeze of my PC... What do you advice me to do at this stage? Maybe trying again with an earlier version?
