  1. Would it be fixed if I copy over a Windows 7 comctl32.dll file and copying it to Vista through Windows Setup cmd? I am not very knowledgeable in kernel extensions and DLL customisation, so I am asking here for help. If that is not possible, would it be fixed if I install an older version of VLC or will audio and video codec support be affected? EDIT : I installed version 2.2.4 and the Aero UI is back!
  2. Huh? I can see retro, Windows 2000 style buttons which are on VLC media player installed on my Vista PC aswell
  3. Hello all, this is an issue that has been making me pull my hair a lot. VLC media player 3.0.10 and 3.0.11 on my Vista PC's do not display the UI correctly, they show a classic, Windows 2000-style UI instead of a proper Aero-style UI, which is ironically, absent on VLC installed on Vista but present on VLC installed on Windows 7. This is how it looks on my PC's: And this is how it should look (I took this screenshot from the VLC website): Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  4. Hear, hear @Dixel I wanted to keep the Server 2008 updates and also the extended kernel, so I thought the best solution to my problem would be uninstalling the Meltdown and Spectre patches that I carelessly installed. Turns out, it worked! Tested this with the latest November build of the extended kernel and also Opera browser, worked just fine (though I have deleted opera browser as I don't use it)!!
  5. Tested after uninstalling the meltdown and spectre patches that I had installed, works just fine!!
  6. Ah-ha! Seems like I have found the cause of the issue! I had installed the meltdown and spectre patches, not bothering about their many disadvantages. Silly me!! I'm uninstalling them now
  7. I know what win32 has did and that his work deserves respect, but I happened to see that @tamarindojuice posted that he updated his system till Nov. 2020 and installed extended kernel which worked fine (that post has been deleted by him btw). So, my issue could be something related to installing the wrong updates (again, I don't know the root cause). I do respect you and I am not meaning to contradict you in what I say, I was just seeking help on how to eliminate the issue while keeping the Server 2008 updates intact, so as to have the best of both worlds. If you still don't understand me completely, fine. I won't distract @win32 or you and won't post anything on this thread from now.
  8. I don't know what's the root cause of the issue I faced earlier, so there is no point in you asking how it's not working for me. I repeat: I'm not very much into kernel extensions and dll customisation, so there could be varied causes, depending on my software configuration. This is why I asked @win32. I know, if he's busy, then I can ask anyone else. I just thought he would be the best person for this
  9. Correct. But @win32 said this earlier: "mfplatsetup.7z is an installer for Windows 7's Media Foundation files, which are used by recent Firefox-based browsers.". That's all that was known about that installer, atleast by me
  10. May I know where the ability to play YT livestreams and Twitch broadcasts after installing the Windows 7 media foundation codecs was specified?
  11. I don't use the local method and I follow the typical system file replacement method, so I don't know what happened to Opera on my Vista and how it worked on yours. That's not something to pick a fight about. There were no BSOD's but the computer was failing to go further than the Microsoft Corporation loading bar. The instructions were removed from the OP, in case you have not noticed!
  12. Trial and error? I'm not very much into kernel extensions and dll customisation (I have said this earlier), so I don't know where stuff might go horribly wrong. I only do this when it is verified that things are working well. Please try to respect what others have to say.
  13. Specs pls, just curious
  14. One question @win32: What exactly does that mfplatsetup.cmd script do? How does it improve video playback on Firefox/forks of Firefox?
  15. I'll be reflecting on this issue that I faced earlier. First off, I resolved it using the method that @win32 suggested me. Second, I thought that a Server 2008 security+quality update was the problem, so I uninstalled it (I think it was KB4530695 or somewhat, please check on this @win32). I tested this on my Vista Home Premium x64 VM and this issue did not occur. So I went on to test this on my Vista Business x64 bare metal. No errors on computer startup! EDIT: Before my Vista install had broken earlier after I ran the extended kernel setup CMD, I tried to run the mfplatsetup.cmd file and was greeted with file system error 65535 on opening CMD, while that did not happen today. Also, I checked kernel32.dll properties and saw that the date modified was 20 November. Is this when you modified and uploaded the file in the archive, @win32?
  16. Opera launched at first, but with Aero not working. Subsequently, I followed your instructions to run a complete working copy of Opera @Dixel, but it still threw dll errors. I'm not going to spend my whole day trying to run it, so I've gotten rid of it. Will be waiting for the next kernelex update that should allow MS Edge to run on Vista.
  17. Awesome pack! Have used this on my secondary Windows 8.1 laptop without issues. Just my 2 cents: 1) Replace the Classic Shell built-in Windows Aero start menu skin with another "Win7LIKE RevC" skin created by juniper7 at the Classic Shell forums. Instructions to use the skin can be found inside the downloadable zip file 2) Rename This PC to Computer and include OldNewExplorer in the pack and do modfications to make Explorer more like 7.
  18. Exactly. Same here on Vista, Audacity works just fine with no errors popping up whatsoever, but maybe we won't get technical support.
  19. @Dave-H Have you installed a RAM patch on your WinXP by any chance?
  20. I in fact just hate Windows 10, as customisation is literally screwed up by it. It always keeps breaking themes with every single update. And btw, XP is very very fast on even a VM with a single CPU core, just like Windows 2000. The only thing that I hated about it was the big, chiclet-style window buttons and a boring default Luna theme. Aside from that, it is a wonderful OS.
  21. You can share from when you started using Windows XP, how and when you use it and other such details here (the more the better) and how you feel about it. Also, please do share your XP PC specs.
  22. Hello all, this is a thread created by me for you fellow MSFN users to share your Windows 7 PC specs and your experience of using Win7. I have created a similar thread on the Windows Vista forum, check it out if you have not already. I've posted my PC specs there. BTW, I used Windows 7 from 2016 to 2017 on the home desktop back when I was a complete computer noob, and then moved on to Windows 10 for a short time, before coming back to Win7. Now I have Vista on that desktop. Also, I used Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 15 3567 (i3-6006u) from April this year till last month, when I moved on to Windows 8.1, which I found faster than 7. Still, 7 was superfast and ran waaay better than Win10, which came as an OEM copy with the Inspiron. Now I have Win7 on a VM that I use for learning a little older computer-related stuff from around 2009-2012 and using Office 2007 when I need it.
  23. Hello all, this is a thread created by me for you fellow MSFN users to share your experience of using Windows XP. I've created such a thread already on the Windows Vista forum, check it out if you have not already. I've shared my PC specs there. BTW, I used XP Home x86 up until 2016 when I was younger and when I was a complete computer noob, and then moved on to Windows 7 on my desktop computer. Also, being a Vista user now, I don't use XP very much, except for testing legacy stuff and using Office 2003 on a XP Pro x86 VM.
  24. All files including opera.exe, launcher.exe etc.?
  25. Replace shell32.dll?
