I'm happy to report that I was able to install Windows 8.1 on b550 with ryzen 5 5600x with no problem at all. No drivers are missing. You can just download the windows 10 ones and manually point to the inf files. Windows 8.0 on the other hand gave me bsod some kernel check exception (don't know exactly atm). Modded drivers made for windows 7 are not working either for me but if anyone knows solution please, tell me. Windows 7 needs modified driver but no problem as well. Seems like 8.1 will only have troubles with gpus but not with motherboards and cpus.

how does Windows 8.1 work on unsupported device
Jaguarek62 replied to Jaguarek62's topic in Windows 8
Actually if you are able to find kabylake chipset then there are drivers for 7/8/8.1. It is just not "officially" supported. -

here is my device manager: https://prnt.sc/yepa6c Aside from the fingerprint driver (there is modding group working on it) everything is installed. The uhd 620 does not have official driver but I found some folks modding the kabylake one. -
how does Windows 8.1 work on unsupported device

Actually there is a way to get intel hd 505 working under windows 7 and 8. I'll have a look and pm you the link to the article I used to get uhd 620 working. -
Hi, I wanted to share my experience of running Windows 8.1 on Dell inspiron 15 3567 with 8th gen i3. I honestly did not expect this but after 40 hours of searching for all drivers, the system works amazingly well. Compared to Windows 10 the battery last around 6-7 hours compared to just 4. It also is more snappy. Even though there is no official support and no official drivers, the laptop is rock solid. Never had any bluescreen, nothing. I'm just wondering how windows 10 can be possibly worse when it has all the support (from dell, intel etc..). Ram usage is also lower on 8.1. Came from 3.7gb to just 1.6 gb. Btw that 3.7gb figure was taken from clean install of windows 10 (no preinstalled dell bloatware). Also I can set display brightness independently (like when the computer is on charger or running from battery). That did not work on Windows 10. On Windows 8.1 there is no random "Fan ramp up" when the computer is running idle or playing videos. I tried windows 7 but unfortunately dell locked windows 7 in bios. It actually says that windows 7 is not supported on this device and bios prevented it from booting (very strange in my opinion). I have picture of this behavior if anyone is interested. Windows 8.1 is running on this device since november 2020 btw.

Oh shoot. So I can't revert it to 8.0 behavior?
-
Greetings, I like the behavior of windows 8.0. Windows 8.0 automatically pins every single new application into metro interface. Is there a way to make 8.1 to do the same thing? Thanks
-
Oh my! That would be amazing!
-
Yeah well that was the first thing I did and it leads to code 43

Well I like amd but lets be honest their drivers sucks even on 7 and 10. And the fact that they skipped 8/8.1 all together makes it even worse. How can you explain to customers which bought rx 480 which had OFFICIAL 8.1 support that they will no longer offer them driver updates. I think it is against their own EULA. I like nvidia cause their drivers are super good and stable. I use geforce experience and shadow play. nvidia dropped their support for 8.1 with rtx 30 xx but they still continue to release drivers for rtx 20xx and older.
-
Can I ask you how is your experience with rx 550 drivers on windows 8.1? I had terrible experiences with amd drivers on 8.1
-
Oh yeah but Idk if I will be able to have it on my main pc. nvidia, intel and amd are doing ther best in cooperation with microsoft to eliminate everything below 10.

Where is my "I use vista on secondary machine"?
-
-
-
I know. My host os is Windows 8.1 running vmware workstation 16. The vm tools installers just gave me an error that vista is not supported.
-
Hi, I've installed clean vista on vmware workstation 16 but the driver installation failed complaining about vista being unsupported. That makes no sense since it is a virtual machine? How should I proceed?
-
I got a "Unsupported hardware" message on boot up...
Jaguarek62 replied to AeroSeeker's topic in Windows 8
install WUFUC. it sometimes pops up after reboot, but don't worry about it. https://github.com/zeffy/wufuc -
I've seen google only mentioning windows 7. Windows 8.1 was not even mentioned. Important: We will continue to fully support Chrome on Windows 7® for a minimum of 24 months after Microsoft’s End of Life date, until at least January 15, 2022.

Screenshare works, but audio does not. In browser it works and when you use app verifier and spoof windows 10, audio works too. It is intentional

Well yes, I'm aware of that. But discord still list windows 7 as their os requirement. Since they still list windows 7 I think we should not add it yet. source: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/213491697-What-are-the-OS-system-requirements-for-Discord-

So I temporarily downgraded my bios to 2017 one and vista installation gets little bit further. Now I get Windows is preparing to start for the first time (again rough translation) and after this finishes I get different bsod. this time it says this: Hal initialization failed
