Running Windows 98 in 2020 and beyond...

Thank you bphlpt I was seeding until not long after Drugwash said the DropBox will be OK for now. I am back seeding again. There were 3 trackers showing with qBittorrent when I posted about it. The peers that are showing 15 & 20% perhaps they are still trying to download but I was finished downloading, no force rechecking at that time but have just done so now as I have changed to Vuze. (when I was downloading & download stopped I did force restart) Some bittorent programs did not upload too well especially when seeding several torrents. I found timed rotation to be fairer to peers who do not have a good P2P connection ie like I could not even connect to Drugwash but it had to be set long enough to get them connected again. I found a download unrestricted speed test http://speedcheck.cdn.on.net/1000meg.test ,hosted in Australia though. If the latter part of my statement is true then it can be a check on how well your internet is connect to OZ. Media thugs, we call them shock jocks, same talk about it here. ThePirateBay.org was unreachable for a while but then OK again. Hopefully just a warning for any downloads that have Media Rights. Some sites that were affected have proxies. bphlpt, the second torrent, did you repack DropBox to 7z & then start or recheck the torrent? LAN, Vuze seems not to be talking between ME & Win7 it used to with Vista, so If I am hosting same torrent on both OSs then allow multiple connections from the same IP should be ticked under transfer option. Also I found this setting which might be significant, 'Enable incremental file creation [Required for FAT32 under Linux]' -

Yes correction I have copied over 1st torrent files. Glad you have point all things out. On WinME the files were laid out different to Win7 there was Public; Public-1; Public-2; with same files inside. I better not ramble on anymore & new thread sounds a good idea. -

There was not a problem with your created torrent as it worked on Win7. The source file becomes the save once torrent is started and therefore has to comply with the operating system hosting the torrent program. I thought it was the names public-1 & public-2 that was the issue or the same file names in both might be it? I did not try the second torrent on ME just yet. I do not know what actually happened did bphlpt connect via qBittorrent as I could not connect to download from you? I think certain countries have better ethernet links between each other. I still cannot link directly to you as your image shows 1 seed so does mine but before download finished it showed 0. The internet has a sort of spring/oscillation about it, speed varies & peers drop away as speed becomes negative so to speak. The trackers provide a relay to link the peers together providing a boost in signal, perhaps there were not enough or the trackers were not located in the necessary locations. I have just copied over from Win7 to WinME via ethernet torrent files & WinME thinks that RPTE1008-Unicode.7z. has the same name as RPTE1008.7z so this could be a problem I do not know just yet. I usually tell it to auto rename it & it renamed RPTE1008.7z > RPTE1008 (2).7z -

I forgot to mention, if the speed drops to below a set value then the activity can be not shown as taking up a slot. Perhaps this is why you did not see any activity? How is it showing? First file now completely downloaded, it sped up a bit. Next thing is to see if the torrent can be found from an internet search, the torrent's name should reflect the content. It should be advertised on the tracker if I have the auto start all completed torrents with zero peers selected. BTW if going to try Vuze , best to download old version and do not accept anything, as it comes with bundled software, A lot of fake files out there see https://msfn.org/board/profile/406317-goodmaneuver/ then let update do it thing thus avoiding unwanted software being installed. -

I got used to Bityrant which was a make over of Azureus 2.5. I used timed rotation, and super seeding as then the same piece is not uploaded as much. I think other peers have to accept super seeding as well and not try to download sequentially. I also set auto start seeding with zero peers so that it helps start the file when it is rare. It was the best performer when dealing with a lot of files. If there was a rare file like your one I am trying to download but is running too slow, I would like to know why, then focus had to be placed on that file as the peer/seed could get impatient. Some algorithms punish peers if they do not share, there are 4 peers showing on my qBittorrent only one is connected I think that will be bphlpt the other 3 could be the trackers. Why are there no seeds showing is that because bphlpt has not got the file either? I think I would be more familiar with Vuze as it will show different detail. It will take a lot longer than 2Hrs now that it is grinding to a halt. Is there any secret in how the first torrent started? My ME Vuze is performing as it should now, I deleted thousands of temporary files. I believe that it was the KEX mode changes that caused the problem from when I was trying to debug for KEX development and not a plugin. I believe the registry was not accessed properly to get the fonts when using the NT40 & above modes. Bittyrant will be vanilla 98 compatible but will need Java; 1.5 will do. It does not recognize some new types of magnets now though. PS I thought I had some some RLoew files seeding but it was just some plugins on that HDD. -

Thanks Drugwash I think I will change back to Azureus, it is much more informative. First file is downloading , much slower though. There are 4 peers not connected unlike 2nd torrent, at the rate it is going it will take 2hrs. I too abide with your sharing decision. -

I have been trying to download using qBittorent since 4Hrs ago. Before that I was using Vuze to download. I have been mucking around with a WinMe build which had Vuze running. It was seeding some RLoew files but this is the one that is intermittent as I think I have put in a plugin that was incompatible and it kept on trying to install. I was running out of lDT resources. Bphlpt, perhaps this is the one that you saw. I think if I create a torrent & see if DW can download it might be worth a try. Link works. -

Msvcr80 is vanilla friendly so if some other programs are compiled to use msvcr90 sometimes all that is needed in registry KnownDLLs is msvcr90 = msvcr80.dll check with Dependency Walker. Try Wyzo 3.6.4, it uses a different exe and different xpcom than FF if that works then then use Roytam1's files. Go back in time with scanreg /restore to clean up registry if it doesn't. I talk about it in How you really browse the web on 98/ME in 2019. Cannot use too high a value of cache in options use up to 100MB only, default 50MB. Opera 10.70 Build 3488 should work. I have not used plain WinME for some time so I may be rusty. Here is a link that I think is Opera 10.7 http://ftp.westnet.com.au/pub/opera/win/1100/autoupdate/Opera_1100_int_Setup.msi it has TLS1.2 selection. -

I have linked in v10.2 direct down load https://sysinternals.d4rk4.ru/download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer9x.zip it is better than v8.52 it has memory graph when enlarged. Gansangriff & Drugwash checking on sent mail; it has been an insight for me. The service providers would not do it unless they had to, it is extra expense and equipment. Privacy is out the window & possibly a sign of things to come for the rest of the world. They would be checking on all internet traffic, the torrent has got all the information in it of what the files are. We in AU have mandatory metadata checking now as a form of security. One other way they might not complain is to host our own web server there are are few free already programmed ones that can run on Win9x, one I am trying to think of starts with X. Although; internet traffic would have to be encrypted at the highest level, even our government wanted a back door into this, they wanted it for the police in the finish but I am not sure it happened. The whole idea of protecting data in transit may be lost. Drugwash your torrent should be unique do you think? There has only been one download so far. Are the 3 peers and 2 seeds a form of spy by security equipment I wonder? Perhaps, should we encrypt the torrent? -

I know that ATI drivers for 9500 and 9700 either can be installed on the cards and x700 drivers run on my x850 agp so the V5200 driver could be good for the V5000? They do not have the same GPU chip number but neither has x700 compared to x850. PCI FireGL 9250 cards were wired different to that of normal 9250 ones and drivers were not made for win9x, so FireGL would need to be the criteria when choosing a driver. I have uploaded INF see if your card is found? CL_40818.zip -

I have one peer located but not connected just yet. Strangely my WinME did not like the file directory setup it seems. It said it was in use by 220A9.... I tried deselecting some files and the decimal number in brackets after the 220A9.... hash number changed, it may not like the file allocation directories naming. Anyway it seems to be OK with Win7 so far. I would have expected to find a seed though. China was very slow bit rate in general from AU using torrents several years ago. Nothing downloaded just yet. If you can download some other file then perhaps it should upload. I have installed qBittorrent. 0 out of 3 peers now. -

Yes but not on my WinME build, it may be because of my registry though. The programing is setup in the registry. I might do a new install one day with updated files in the WinCab folders. Process Explorer vs 10.20.0.0 is a good tool and is vanilla Win98 compatible. It will show CPU usage accurately & minimizes to tray. There was a lot of talk about System Monitor in Tihiy's tools topic. I tried updated MESP1 SysMon with no noticeable differences. -

DrugWash, would Bittorent file sharing work? I can confirm your latest NetMeter vs & Mempanel works without bugs with AHK 1.0.48.5. -

DrugWash I have compiled your programs thank you for sharing your work. I like the reverse committed charge (amount of virtual memory left) great texturing (colors). Double left clicking NetPanel.exe brings up Switch Interfaces but then does not show icon but there is a phantom icon there and tray context is functioning. Both are great programs & run fully from AHK scripts & icons show so not a problem. I can get full download speed from CometBird 9, over 2M Bytes per second. Unfortunately I can not get it to IP transfer on a relatively standard WinME build? (This was because I was using KEX 4.5.11.) FF3.6 not a problem. Opera & FF3.6 (Wyzo) tests at 2.7 MB/s real download speed tested today. When I use Tihiy's IpTest it did not go to tray. All I get is a volume control after reboot with no extra program running. I do not run the Windows systray volume control in normal usage but use VolumeMouse. I think I may have a registry problem if other members do not have icon problems? I will investigate, when I installed KEX 4.5 years ago it altered Kernel32.dll slightly, first thing I will replace with original. Windows System monitors zero point is offset ever since installing DotNet framework 2.0. ie shows a higher % when idling but when mouse is moved continuously for example CPU usage drops. I think this has got to do with registry HKEY_DYN_DATA. Process explorer shows CPU usage of zero. Also happen one time on an old mother board where standard WinME IDE driver did not work. I lowered 3.3V down a bit then driver booted in and worked good but ever since had high CPU usage. I raised 3.3V back again and still worked but still had high CPU indication. I assume I broke a CMOS transistor but I let you work that one out. PS. I changed kernel32 back to original but when booting then changes kernel32 again with KEX 4.5.2. I have been running KEX23 with original kernel32. Ahk2Exe.exe needs KEX disabled. -

It does not make sense though about not being able to post an exe inside a compression file. What if the file is placed inside a folder and renamed txt file or something and then zipped? It might be a Linux thing/mail setting? -

I agree with Loblo about Lobo Evolution, it performs the same with Win7 as it does with WinME. This might not be a bad thing if it gets further development. GNGR when testing with Win7 works a bit better than Lobo but still is not a viable option. The out of date screen comes up and then continues to welcome screen. -

One method is to have the 5 1/4" at the end of a long floppy cable and a 3 1/2" in the middle named A and B drives. The drive on the middle connection run at twice the access time as the 5 1/4" at the end so the 3 1/2" had to be a good one, a >=2002 model. Another method is in parallel as picture shows. The prerequisite is that the 5 1/4" has to work by itself. This usually requires a machine to operate with a maximum of 66 - 83 FSB. The key board access time had to be set to 6 stokes per second or less if BIOS had adjustment. This slowed down access rate to the floppy drives so that the 5 1/4" had a chance.

2.7.1 MSI from python.org/downloads/releases/python-271 installs on win9x. I run the latest python 2.7 by getting files from win7 install of latest 2.7 version. The real python.dll is designed to be compatible with 2K and also will run on win9x. Just copy over from other OS found in system32 directory. Replace third party compiled python.dll with one from python.org. -

Back from the past. You want proof, I got it. The machine is still assembled, l am glad I checked as I have done it an other way :- in parallel. It must be better or easier to get going in parallel. https://msfn.org/board/topic/180643-how-to-make-5-14-3-12-drives-work-on-a-single-cable/?tab=comments#comment-1172919 -

Old machines were good at driving 5 1/4 floppy drives. With Pentium 111 the KB access times had to be set to 6 stokes per second or less if BIOS had adjustment. This slowed down access to floppy drive so that 5 1/4 had a chance. I installed a 5 1/4 at the end of a long floppy cable and a 3 1/2 in the middle named A and B drives. The drive on the middle connection run at twice the access times as the 5 1/4 one at the end so the 3 1/2 had to be a good one, 2002+ models. -
