Yeah performance finally here i will post some numbers, i forgot where exactly i should turn on DMA - that it is on device setting in Device Manager. I going to by AHCI patch regardless of this problem, because of second machine.. But for now to keep it simple, i will not change IDE to AHCI, until Nvidia related bugs would be fixed. Compatibility mode is not working with my Sata III Sandisk Ultra Extreme II at all (long boot and disk is not visible in Bios), so im forced use this enhanced mode, ment for Windows 2000 and XP. Its 10 bucks, im ok with that, my that right mbr patch for 20 $ is something which scares me I will invest some time to search alternatives, because it is stupid Windows partition types detection mistake.. I just removed Sil(ly) controller from Conroe865 machine to keep it simple, i used it only because DVD ROM, i dont rember details, but you wrote something about, that DVD maybe would not be working with patch..

Vanilla QEMU could be commandline nightmare, one wrong character and lots of mess and that is why frontends are there.. QEMU is powerfull, can run even on other architekture - ARM for x86 Windows, i have Win98 on Android 7 netbook etc.. Unraid is really pretty frontend - its just simple GUI and template for typical OS, you only need edit 1 xml, i specific cases, like is Windows 98 emulation (no template) and you need edit 1 string for NIC, when you dont have USB lan.. and its only because of laziness of GUI developer, GUI is running as web page.. You can look at some video about it: If you dont game you have easy life with your machine, because for gaming everything have to be working - GPU, sound, controls, HW have to be strong etc.. Why i play games? In general, easy answer is that golden grail of video games is best movie which you could imagine were you can play some important role and change a story.. Games technology is still far from that, primary because of stupid AI (my thing), but they can still give you some moments when you feel that you are somebody else, on some other place, its like pen and paper rpgs.. Of course there are some simple stupid games for just relax too, if you have mood for them.. Its like food, alcohol, drugs, you dont need strong stuff every time, sometime is a cigarette and glass of wine enough.

On second machine - intel 865 is not U98SESP3 install so problem have to elsewhere, but i had no time to check purgehc here, i think here is primary problem active ahci.. I wonder what improvements have U98SeSO3 Esdi file and why is not possible to use your patch for it?

Ok, i did it: Once again its not working for me, reboot after is Sata driver installed in normal mode and second (first with installed drivers) normal boot freeze, im quite sure that i did all steps right.. I think that you really should write some simple check (if i did all really right) or installation utility.. Because probably some assumption how it is working is wrong..

It is. Ok new info, i want to all port in IDE mode, but i will try it. Im affraid that it will be neccesity, to be honest this Windows 98 project, is probably biggest failure in my retro gaming journey.. I invested much less time, into Unraid Windows 98, which is now up and working, but im dont like messy accounts, so im not give up on physical machines.. BTW you should consider some you all in one package for gaming or something like that. I hope that on dead bed you will make it open source and enhance manking, im affraid that even in next decades some madmans will this try to check authentic Win98 experience.. Ok all above was about my AMD970 machine, what abou my Conroe865PE, is there any hope, without AHCIBIOS patch? Present situation summary - its booting only in Enhanced - IDE mode, when im getting MS-DOS mod and im unable to make DVD drive working on mother Sata port or on Sil3512 controller. I experimenting in was day with Compact flash to IDE adapter and this MB IDE looks problematic.. there are issues too.. Installation of XP with USB installer took 5 hours, very slow disk transfers, could be crappy adapter (i have tried 2), but i think that is about board a its enhanced mode, compatibility mode dont working for most of my devices at all.. Or it maybe dont like my SIl3512 board, but XP and WIndows 7 and LMDE 2 Linux are working fine with that and without working Sata i dont want to remove it..

So just major questions: 1) how is Direct3D and OpenGL managed, if its working how fast? 2) Virtualbox is in general quite slug- slow (i dont really like pay 300 bucks for Vmware worktation license, but Virtualbox "quality" is forcing me to do it, with ever major Vmware release.. for my normal work, WIn 98 is my hobby..) - you can see lots of KVM, VMware vs Virtualbox performance comparion on Phoronix is quite far from physical HW or passthrough.. so found mister Kurt some magic solution for that? Or its slow, but because of slowness of Windows 98 on real HW, is still faster? Its quite know that Vmware is faster for some old configuration and tasks that physical HW, because of some secret sauce hacks and old OS design flaws..

Hmm i would extected something simple like - im starting this, done, im starting that.. crash or missing entry, Linux boot logs is quite simple in this logic. Why it is more complex and complicated, its boot multithreaded, or some already started drive could crash after a while? If logging such, could be coded some logging wrapper to make it better, because if debug sucks, development usually sucks too. PROBLEMCHYLD - 1 hint if you need something between VM (no proper 3D drivers for Win98 in no go for me) and physical machine, Unraid (KVM) is solution, its fastest Windows 98 machine which i had (no CPU Win98 limitation, because of MB compatibility, fastest today / future CPU possible, no IDE or Sata - driver speed problems its fast, no NIC lan problem - Realtek 8139 NIC is emulated) and it does GPU passthough so 3D is working and emulated hardware is best compatible (intel440) which no could have, no installation problems etc... Only hassles are: - that you need to switch display outputs + usb inputs (manually or with some display output switch with auto detection or inputs priority support - Input1 signal> Input 2>Input 3) or multiple displays (Lazy solution, i mean use 1 display just for booting and maintenance, is waste ). USB - you could be more usb input devices, usb switch or passthrough whole USB controller for particular machine (most elegant). - when you use more 1 virtual machines at once on 1 physical HW, you could crash them all at once, but there is advantage, that crash of Windows 98 or other machine, could crash only virtual and physical machine could survive - there some isssues with Display signal output - one more layer - additional layer of QEMU, were could be bugs, but once you hit right configuration (1 xml file) you are ok and there is quite sure that QEMU and Unraid will get better and better over time. - you need HW with vt-d support - so no cheap Core i3 / Pentiums / Celeron.. or Ryzen (stupidly designed IO groups regarding to Level1tech) Other advantages are better use of 1 pc for better multiboot, there is not all HW (for example, you have 4 /8 (cheap AMD slugs, but still 8 cores) core machine, but because of Win98, you are utilizing only 1 core and all 3/7 not used at all - there could be NAS, Linux Web browser terminal, girlfriends or guest pc etc..) just sacrificed to dark god of Windows 98.. For Win 98 just need 1 old PCI-E/ PCI GPU, which could be in any PCI-E slot and thats all, because of passthrough you dont care about disabling old GPU in modern OS (its not forwarded there). Passthrough compatibility is quite good, i wasnt able passthrough only 1 GPU (Ati Mach 2 MB PCI), but even Vooodoo 3 worked. Audio could be passthrough too, i used PCI Audigy, but USB Soundcard is maybe more elegant solution. I dont have any shares in KVM / Unraid, i swear

Hello, i wonder why someone still now using Windows 98 except obvious reasons like retro gaming (my thing, for me 9x games were best at least in money / performance ratio, so lots now impossible concepts were realized), or old software support. This system wasnt own for its stability, messing with drivers is hell and lots of modern features are missing. Its about speed and purity of GUI, or you only hate change?

I use lots of such programs - when i check Autoruns log, in Drivers tab is lots things and less than i thing 1/2 is hardware related. Yeah clean i mean, installed XP with HW drivers but without other user programs. Logs, this is problem im using bootlog start options, but i have checked C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt + minidump directory, but there wasnt any record for last boot on some computers, only some old ones.. im not sure in i can of PAGE_FAULT*IN_*NON_PAGED AREA is anything logged.. I or look into wrong log. Logs (ntblog + autoruns) from main computer attached, its old installation - very customized: / I know, i know, some ghost drivers should be removed.. and there are strange things like paragon GPT driver + etc.. I think that it is about 1 card setup, not about dual card setup, in general i have not problem with single Geforce 7950GT card in Win 7 or 10, but its hard to believe that multiple cards are working, virtualy whole internet says that it dont.. but here in Win 98 > 1 GB machine list, is 1 users entry, which claim that Geforce 7950GT and Geforce 950 is working in Windows 10. I really want to see it, if it working, there is some special trick which need to be done, simple dual gpu stunt described above is not enough.

I really dont believe that combination of Geforce 7950GT and newer Nvidia card could work with Windows 7 or 10, can someone share screenshot of device manager or something like that to proof that it is working?

What about some HW and SW boot drivers - white / black list? I dont mind to create one in Zoho or Google docs. In my case clean Windows working, but existing installation with lots of SW dont, so there are probably some evil imcompatible SW with own drivers needed

GUI - was primary speaking about documentation, where picture help, same as on the web. But even in DOS, you could use VGA mode - 320x240x256 or 640x480x16, its running i think still on all Windows 98 VGA cards, SVGA would a bit more fun.. Other solution is some text graphics mode - like old turbovision from Borland, i assume that new developed IDE has such libraries too. I just tested remove noide key on both my systems, is not magic solution - when i remove it i have got normal boot hang, removed controller, normal boot ok - sata patch installed, normal boot hang.. And doesnt helped with zombie controllers, there still there - and are still non removable. Sil3512, i have using it on on Conroe865PE MB machine. I not sure about bios IDE/SATA setting.. There is Compatibility mode - which enabling one IDE controlller +SATA - but in my case i have always got with this mode boot hang - even before OS boot, so im using some enhanced mode - in Bios description is that is good for Win 2000 / XP.. So i probably cant enable classic old IDE mode - i will debug it, if is problem with Sata III HD or with Sata DVD driver, or in general with board.. So im probably booting with AHCI mode enabled. Because is have such headaches with Sata patch, i would probably just use SIL controller, but it seems that it is not supporting Grub boot loader even with newest bios and i wrote in the past, when i install its drivers i cant now boot - my is because of conflict with other setting.. I will check its setting, i didnt that after its bios flash. Update: BIOS has to set to Enhanced mode - other wise is not my SATA drive detected at all, so its means that i here im probably also using AHCI and there is not other choice, completly disconected DVD drive for testing. AHCIBIOS - what is price? RFDISK - i need make Sata running, after that i will think about it.

Thanks for reply, i know you are probably old terminal fan, but if you dont have any master utility with inbuild configuration autodetection or step by step gui installer.. at least some picture like flow chart or mindmap style diagram packaged with product would help more that long text files and per user support.. Because when i bought something with name Sata patch, i just though that i will install something and all Sata configuration would be just handled without users tweaking, yeah maybe im naive or spoiled user.. No any other or patch related / zombie controllers involved, no disk controller cards, only NIC + 2x Geforce videocards. Were could be problem? I checked the list, but there is not quite similar machine like mine, ragnargd has only G7950 + G950 with Win10.. Nobody with Geforce 7xxx + New Geforce 200/400/500/600+ etc.. card and Windows 7. If im not wrong driver model of Windows 10 is other that in Windows 7.. I dont care of XP, because Geforce 1030 is not supported by XP, there is G7950 still ok. Simple fix, would be force Windows 7 to completly ignore Geforce 7950GT or first PCI-E slot, but dont know if such utility exist.. Otherwise its problematic, 2 nvidia cards, using same file location for their drivers, and even when is card in primary pci-e slot disabled or in with VGA driver and disable, there is still not picture on second card, or proper Windows 7 driver loaded.. Other solution would be utility to force primary videocard indepedently on vendors GPU drivers.. Yeah there is settings of primary Nvidia GPU in nvidia panel - when it is working, maybe someone could monitor Registry with something like Regmon and point me, which value is changed after using Nvidia control panel and we can fix it through some *.reg file. .. But i never so, this panel used with 2 Nvidia cards, only for Integrated and Nvidia dGPU selection. There is some video:

Yes i did, but i dont know which part of SP3 actually fixed my issues, i have some physical machine when even after SP3 installation is issue still exist - probably because of SATA - IDE driver running in IDE mode => 1 MB/s transfer rate and freezes even in Windows Explorer..

Hmm, i didnt get that so called Sata patch, is actually not for classic classic vanilla Sata, but only for special cases like - like MB with Sata controller and IDE or RAID mode, external controller Sata controllers etc.. Because with AMD 97 have tried - only controller in AHCI mode with patch.. Because i dont want to use IDE mode with modern OS, where i want to use full speed of Sata III and that i one of reasons why i even bough the patch. Yeah you can said that i can use different disk for differrent OSes, but its annoying.
