the only way to stop windows from adding any programs to this open with list is to make the registry of open with list READ ONLY for your account's permission. btw, can you share me your open with list registry key.? I want to know where this key locates. thanks

I had this problem before and this is how i fixed mine do you have recovery console installed in your computer.? if not, use your windows CD and choose to go to recovery console. When you are there, use the command fixboot / fixmbr. It's probably fixboot will solve your problem. if you are not sure and my memory is not good nowsday, do fixboot and fixmbr, will definitely solve your problem. Restart your computer afterward, everything should be fine. if you want to learn these command, simply type fixboot /? if you want to install recovery console AFTER FIXING YOUR problem, go to "run" and type cdrom drive:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons just to be sure, you can google for instruction how to install recovery in your machine.

thanks for the information but your info mentioned about running wmp installer with switch why do i need to do that when i slipstream it in winxp folder.? There must be another way to by pass this error message. Perhaps, i need a reg info. if anybody knows, pls share. thanks again

i extracted WMP into winxp folder and burned into a CD. Unattended installation went smoothly without any error BUT i saw a message "you stopped system restore and you would like to continue install WMP10" or something like that. i'm sure that when you install WMP10 on your computer , you will receive the same message which tells you about activating windows system restore before installing WMP10. how can i make this message goes away during unattended installation.? any registry info.? thank you

I manually integrated SP2 + hotfixes into my winxp folder which is ready to be burned. I also have MS cdimage utility+ MS boot.img. The question that i'm having is i want to use this cdimage utility to make an image of windows xp and burn it into CD so that i can perform fully unattended installation in my computer with this CD. How can i do that.? Oh no, i don't want to use any software to help me do this. I prefer to do everything manually. thank you very much.

I notice 1 file in my winxp SP2 computer at c:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\. The file name is trace.log which is eating my hard drive space at a faster rate. When i tried to delete it, it tells me that it's used by some process which i don't know which one. i tried to delete it in SAFE MODE but couldn't do it. if you know the solution for this problem, pls post it here. thank you very much.

thank you for letting me know. I don't need to do anything with my WMI because you have the same problem. I can't believe MS put something like this in *development tool*. i'll look into WMIC to see if anything is different from it.

the only 2 classes that i have problems are CIM_DATAFILE (path property doesn' work) and ntlog things (application,security in event viewer doesn't work) when i write script about them. every class in WMI runs fine in my computer BUT not the above ones. I ran a few scripts from scriptcenter at MS. They claim these scripts work in their XP but dont' work on MINE if you know how to fix it, pls let me know. thank you.

try to uninstall the older version of WMP by going add/remove application and REINSTALL WMP10 again

when you right click on a blank desktop, you see a context menu which has "new". whenever you open an application, a format of that program appear in this "NEW" thing. my questions are. 1-How can I stop windows from adding other formats in this "New" menu. I want to keep a default setting (folder,briefcase, and shortcut)for this menu.? 2-Where does this "new" menu locate in the registry.? thank you
