  1. Both Windows Media Player 9 and 10 behave the same way: if I play a video file (avi, wmv, mpg), just before the end of it the screen turns black (but I can still hear the audio). The other players I usually use (BSplayer, Media Player Classic) work fine. Has anybody experienced something like this? If so, how did you manage to fix it? I tried with WMP 9 and 10 with the same results. UPDATE: Lowering the hardware acceleration solved the problem. But now that everything works, I wonder why it happened. In the past I've never had to do that, so why now?
  2. Good, thank you very much for your help Yzöwl.
  3. A blank line at the end, ok. Speaking of blank lines, I usually put one between an entry and the next one. Would it somehow "break" the reg file if I put more than one? I'm talking about pure blank lines, since the ones where I explain the meaning of an entry is commented with ";". Thanks a lot.
  4. Thanks, I'll do it. Just out of curiosity, what would happen if I did the opposite (appending the old content to the new 'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00' file)? It's just to check if I got it right, you know.
  5. Let me explain this with an example. This is the "REGEDIT4" file: ; Auto-Expand folders [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "FriendlyTree"=dword:00000001 ; Disable "Encrypt/Decrypt" on folders' context menu [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "EncryptionContextMenu"=dword:00000000 ; Internet Explorer [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "IEWatsonDisabled"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "DisablePasswordCaching"=dword:00000001 and this is the new reg file: ; Disable 'Browse Web For Program' To Open Unknown Extensions [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoInternetOpenWith"=dword:00000001 ; Remove Windows Alexa Spyware [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a}] ;Disable windows built in zip functionality [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\CompressedFolder] [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CompressedFolder] ;Remove WMP Right Click Options [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F1B9284F-E9DC-4e68-9D7E-42362A59F0FD}] [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8DD448E6-C188-4aed-AF92-44956194EB1F}] [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CE3FB1D1-02AE-4a5f-A6E9-D9F1B4073E6C}] ; Enable Tahoma Font In Notepad [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad] "lfFaceName"="Tahoma" ; Enable Word Wrap In Notepad [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad] "fWrap"=dword:00000001 I need to merge them, that's why I asked about those two different versions of reg files.
  6. Ok, I understand, but since I don't need unicode support, it doesn't really matter if I put the strings under "REGEDIT4" or "Windows Registry ... 5.0", does it? thanks
  7. I've got a txt with some reg tweaks I wrote some time ago. The file starts with "REGEDIT4". While trying to merge it with a new reg file, I've noticed that the newer one says "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00". What's the difference between version 4 and 5? Should I get rid of "REGEDIT4" and put all the keys in the other (newer) file? Thanks.
  8. Well, there are many many things that you need to be always the same, so a utility like that would allow you to save a lot of time at least.
  9. Are you asking me or Win2k3EE?
  10. Thanks! What if I can't find "backup" in there? I'm sure it's my fault, I know it, but I doesn't seem to see it.
  11. Yes, I've tried using File & Settings Wizard and it's almost perfect, but it doesn't include the changes I make in Control Panel > System and Control Panel > Folder Properties. Is this the UMTS you're referring to? Thanks. P.S. Isn't it weird that among the thousands of utilities available on the net nobody has ever done something to backup ALL the settings of a XP installation? Hard to believe, to me.
  12. I've prepared an unattended Windows XP Professional installation CD with slipstreamed SP2, patches and many customizations with nLite. However, since nLite does not allow to customize every aspect of the OS, after installing it I need to go through many steps before I can say "done!". Usually I customize the desktop, the taskbar, the start menu, some tweaks with "gpedit.msc" (for which I've posted a different thread, it's a different story anyway), some changes in System (pagefile, performance, startup & recovery etc.), some in Control Panel (system sounds). I've managed to write down a big .reg file to set the Services just doubleclicking it so now what I'm looking for is a tool to backup all those other settings and restore them whenever I need to re-install XP on a different machine. I've never known if such a tool exists and Google didn't help, so now I'm asking here. Thanks in advance.
  13. Hi, I need to back up the settings I've changed with "gpedit.msc". I've found out that if I backup the whole \system32\GroupPolicy\ folder I can easily restore it when I format and reinstall XP. In that folder there are 3 subfolders and a .ini file: - \Adm (1.58MB) - \Machine (empty) - \User (6KB) - gpt.ini Do I need to backup all the folders and the ini or maybe just the Adm folder? Thanks.
  14. erik_demon is right, use RegShot, just keep in mind that when it shows you which keys have been modified, it shows you both the old value and the new one (it can be confusing the first time, at least it confused me).
  15. And that's what I did too, but I used RegShot. The point is that even if I find the keys which are modified after the customization process, when I try to import them as a reg file they don't apply (which makes me think that those are not the right keys). Right now the Services.reg works good, I've found a way to import the settings of gpedit.msc (I just have to copy the whole folder where windows saves those entries), the only thing left is the start menu, the taskbar and some minor things in System (swao file, visual effects and stuff). Thank God I can use VMware to test every ISO I make, otherwise it would be dramatic!
