Best way to check for 9x App compatibility?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Torchizard's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Or else they put just "Windows" as the system requirements. *Slaps Head* *Facepalm* What windows? Windows 2.0? Windows 95? Windows 7. These morons don't get my money or time. -
Best way to check for 9x App compatibility?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Torchizard's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Um, I usually read any text files called "readme.txt", which usually tell you the system requirements. Sometimes if you go up to the help menu, there's a sub-menu that details the system requiremts... obviously if the program is loaded, then you meed at least the minimum requirements. I go to OldApps.com and click on the "windows me" icon to find the last working version for windows me. -- I know, this doesn't help much. I don't know why you'd want to spend time with DLLs and dependencies. What good is some buggy program that doesn't work right? And that is one thing that irks me, authors who don't list the system requirements for their software. IF they're too lazy to bother with it, than so am I. -
I've purchased only one brand of thumb drives, TechUniverse. The 2Gb ones say on the back of the package that they're compatible with Windows ME. I've only seen these items being sold at Rite Aid. I bought another brand, which, when I bought it, I didn't realize it requires some password protection or activation. Needless to say it didn't work on Windows ME. Newfangled junk. I guess I'll just stock up on these Tech Universe ones. The 2gb ones work great. And there's another 4gb model they make that look's like a key for a key chain. It works as well, though the package doesn't say it.

how big of a thumb drive can I pop into my windows ME computer? I have a bunch 2 gigs, plus a 4gig.... I notice the stores have ones that are like 8, 12, 16 or whatever. Would they work?

Windows version with best icon/graphic style
ZortMcGort11 replied to flarn2006's topic in The Poll Center
Sorry I was rude to you Jody T.... I was in a real bad mood yesterday. You're points are correct. I shouldn't dismiss other folks legitimate grievances with Windows ME. Oh well... nothing I can do about that now. I feel lost on newer stuff. I used "some" version of Office at a printing shop while doing a resume... couldn't figure out what the hieroglyphics did. I thought Word 6 on Windows 3.1 was sufficient. Maybe I'm behind the times. -

Windows ME, and only Windows ME. Everything else sucks.

Windows version with best icon/graphic style
ZortMcGort11 replied to flarn2006's topic in The Poll Center
I voted for Windows 98/ME, but that's only because Windows ME didn't have it's own category. I find it insulting to Windows ME users such as myself that we don't get our own category, when in fact Windows ME is closer to Windows 2000 in appearance (icons and menus and such), than it is to Windows 98. As a matter of fact, I hate that pile of steaming, unstable cr@p Windows 98, because it's the worst OS I ever used. Windows 2000 was a piece of junk too. Naysayers can kiss my Windows ME butt. (Sorry if this is rude, but I'm tired of all the Windows ME hatred and ignorance... didn't even get my own box to choose... so yeah, my anger is justified.) -
Very cool links Drugwash, thank you! I'm trying Dplus right now and I like it. It's like an improved version of "Off by One" browser. I'm going to try those other ones next.

K-Meleon 1.6 and 1.7 are good KernelEx browsers for dial-up, seeing as how they're portable and can easily be deleted without leaving junk behind in my Windows folder, but compared to verison 1.5.4 they're still a lot slower. And as for Opera, the turbo mode was useful in version 10.63, but it was changed drastically for the worse in Opera 11. I visited the Opera forum and asked them why version 10.63 compresses the images more than 11+, but it wasn't worth the moderator's time to answer my question, plus he didn't believe what I was saying. So it was a slap in my face. What, did he think I was lying? Anybody who wants to can see there's a huge difference between opera Turbo in version 10.63 and 11+. The older one really compressed the heck out of the graphics, and it was fast, the newer Turbo mode only compresses slightly. There isn't nearly as much speed gain. The only answer they felt like giving was "it's just a proxy server... there's no difference... they're the same. Yada Yada." Actually, there is a big difference. Opera Turbo on versions greater than 11 is basically worthless. I will look into this QT browser though, thank you.

I can see the use for KernelEx when you have High Speed Internet, but for dial-up there's too many issues: speed is even worse than non-KEX browsers; plus there's no printing, no stop buttons, no drop-down address bars, and other issues. Which, when taken together, create more problems then they solve. At this point, my number one criteria for any program on my computer is speed. Foremost, they have to be fast. Secondly, there can't be any "bugs" or other issues. Those two criteria pretty much excludes using KernelEx on my computer. I'm going back to using Netscape 9.6, since I feel it's the most user-friendly, ingenious browser ever created :-) And I'm uninstalling ClamWin, because it's a waste of 10 megabytes RAM. I don't know why they HAVE to make it load to the system tray on startup. So, adios Clamwin and KEX.

thanks for the links. I'll check those out. K-Meleon 1.5.4 is still my alternate browser.

Oh well, I just need my computer for managing my photos, and checking email and craigs list. As long as it works with basic HTML Gmail I'll keep using it. Wikipedia articles still look good too.

I'd have to agree with your sentiments about Firefox############## There's pretty much no browser suitable for Win9x dial-up anymore. It's game over. Nothing is even half-way decent.############# Firefox 3 is okay, but it's slower (nowhere as bad as Firefox 8) and already outdated anyway. I can't use it for online shopping, or other things withthout getting a "your browser is outdated" message. ########## SeaMonkey 1.1.19 is the last "good" dial-up friendly browser.
-
There's no Stop button, or a drop down box in the address bar. Another vital feature I can't find is right clicking on images to "Block Images From This Server" which is available in SeaMonkey 1.1.19 and Firefox 2..................................................................................................................................................................... My question is, what's the last version of Firefox between 4 and 8 to have all of the above features? Since I'm on dial-up, there MUST be a stop button and an image blocking button for all the ads. It's horrible without them. My Kernelex experience is just using Firefox 3.5, K-Meleon 1.6, and Opera 11.x. Any input would be appreciated thanks.

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read.php?1,125632 K-Meleon Build 74. Don't know if this would work with KernelEx though. Seems to be a chromed version of K-meleon, similar to latest Firefox and Seamonkey builds. I'm on dial-up, so I'm too tired to download right now and try. But let me know if it works with Kernel Ex.

sorry for it being one huge paragraph, it appears having javascript disabled does that. It removes the pargraph breaks.

To the original poster, I don't think it's pointless to build your ideal Windows 9x gaming system. I'm not into gaming like you are, but I'm into Windows 9x for doing "everyday" tasks. I can still do the following: - transfer pictures from my digital cameras - organize and view my pictures using CompuPic Pro or countless other image viewing programs - check my email, read the news - type a paper or resume - listen to MP3s and keep music files on my computer Total cost is simply $9 / month for dial up Internet Thanks to Kernel-Ex I can use Opera (pretty much the only option for dial-up users) All my computer parts are used, people practically give these kinds of parts away free The way I look at it, people are throwing their money away paying for the same exact thing over and over from Microsoft: a glorified type writer and email checker. I could write a paper in Windows 3.1 using Word 6.0 which would look the same as papers written nowadays. And to sound paranoid, I think newer computers are just ways for the NSA to access your personal files. Now, for my suggestions on building a system. I don't know... I'm not really a computer builder person. I can update the RAM, swap out a hard drive or CD-Rom but that's all I've done. I got my current computer off Ebay after searching for "Windows 98 Computer" or "DOS Computer".... there were plenty of results to pick from. I was looking for things within a certain range: Pentium III computers, under 1 GB RAM, 1.7 GHz or less CPU.... basically, machines that won't give me much trouble when installing Windows Millennium. And before you buy something, go online and read the manual for whatever computer you're interested in, see whether or not it's even capable of supporting Win9x. Personally, if doesn't support Win9x I don't bother. I got my current computer off Ebay. It's the same model as my older machine, which was designed for Windows ME and Windows 2000 only. The person I bought it from had installed Windows XP on it. Why? It only had 256 MB RAM installed. Must have been really slow. So when the computer arrived, I just popped in my Windows ME floppy boot disk, I F-Disked the drive, created a new DOS partition, then formatted it, then installed Windows ME. Took maybe an hour at most. Basically, you might have to trade off simplicity for speed. Do you want something that's going to be the "fastest" but will probably be a pain to set-up (not to mention reformatting the drive and re-installing all the drivers) or do you want something that's designed for Windows 9x and is simpler to maintain, but which isn't the fastest.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm wondering if there's a device that I can use as sort of a USB hub on my Windows ME computer. I'm looking for something I can plug in once to the back of the machine, kind of like an extension port, which will allow me to plug in my thumb drives into this port or "hub" thingy, without having to over-use and wear out my usb port. I'd rather wear out the "hub" than the port on my computer. Is there anything like this that exists for Windows ME? Thanks.
