  1. I believe that the 'instability' or flaws we run across in Windows is due to the generalist nature we demand of our PC systems. Look at something like X Box or PS2. These are very nice COMPUTERS - but they have an OS that is built to do a very specific thing. Thus - no BSD, etc. If you want absolute stability - get a calculator to do math, a typewriter to write on, a CD player to listen to music, a pencil and paper to create art, etc etc etc blah blah blah. When you think about all the purposes that are served by these MACHINES - it is pretty amazing - IMHO. LS_Dragons
  2. Make regular backups and disk images of my system - so I can format and re-install more often! LS_Dragons
  3. Blubster won't connect for me. What ports do I need to check on my Cable/DSL Router? Any other secrets to know about? LS
  4. If you are getting a laptop - and can afford a bit more - them go for a hub/router (whichever fits your need) with built in wireless - then when you get the laptop - get a wireless card for it and you can be 'attached' from anywhere in the house! LS
  5. I got a beard/mustache trimmer - which I really need now that I have grown my mustache into a beard. Kids got the X-box to go along with PS2, so I will enjoy that as well. Also got a new ATI Radeon grafix card - from me to me (hehehehe). Hope you all have full stomachs and happy thoughts - LS_Dragons
  6. I like it - very festive :-) LS
  7. Beam me over to Tris's house for a pint, Scottie LS_Dragons
  8. I think both the Mac and PC are 802.11(a/:) based. In that case you can go with a Linksys Broadband Sharing Wireless Router. You hook the line from Cable Modem into the Linksys. The Linksys has 4 ethernet ports (10/100) and Wireless antenna. This lets you share the cable connection to 4 "wired" PC's plus as many wireless PC's as you want. The new models are pretty good - and will easily cover most residential buildings.Check this article - and the rest of the site for some excellent info: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/macnpc.htm LS_Dragons BTW Zipp - might as well get 2 setups while you are shopping - cause after you get your kid's up and running - you will want a setup for yoursel :-) LS
  9. Gee Sedative - you feeling OK? Thought for sure I would see a post regarding the blatant commercialization BLAH BLAH BLAH -- only kidding -- Everyone have a great and festive holiday season. And don't forget the forum during your vacation/break/etc. LS_Dragons
  10. Real good find -- I have seen may - but some new ones too. LS_Dragons
  11. good idea with the 2 user accounts. I have not messed much with user accounts - have an Admin and an LS_Dragons account - both with full privileges. When you have multi users - are programs installed for USER1 available in the start menu for USER2? What are some other things you use it for? LS

  13. I was thinking that a new Main topic needed to post comments and/or problems encountered with Office 11. What have you come across you REALLY like! Hate! Bugs/fixes. So far, best new feature I have come across is in Outlook. The new UNREAD MAIL filter and FOLLOW UP filter make it very easy to now keep track of new mail for those who like to sort mail on receipt into certain folders. The overall "visual" of Outlook is much improved IMO. LS_Dragons
  14. Am I missing something, or with the new setup - can you only search WITHIN a forum. I mean - I cannot seem to find a way to search the whole board for posts - or search for posts by specific member name. LS
  15. Turns out that the problem had to do with XP. There were some files that had been 'staged' by XP to write to a CD-R that did not get deleted. Was able to clear them out and then the drive could be shared again. LS
  16. Drew - I have agreed with you about Nero - but when I got my DVD+RW drive, it wasn't recongnized so I installed Roxio and it was working. Time to go back to Nero I guess. LS
  17. doesn't matter - it is the SHAPE - not the HAIR LS
  18. OK - for some reason, I cannot enable sharing for the DVD+RW drive in my windows xp system. This system has Roxio CD Creator version 5 installed. On another XP Pro system without Roxio - the CD-RW drive can be shared. Anyone know whether Roxio is causing the problem - or is it the DVD+RW drive? LS
  19. YUP - learn something from that newsletter every time LS
  20. What a crock anyway. Soon as you freeze the **** thing, all the peperoni fall off to one side (at least all the ones I buy do). I agree with Drew - just some 'scientists' getting out of real class-work! LS
  21. 9/16 -- but then I am not a "nose man" give me a 'legs' test, and bet I get 100% LS_Dragons
  22. Using the "A Word or Phrase in the File" Search Criterion May Not Work SYMPTOMS When you search for files that contain text by using the A word or phrase in the file search criterion, the search results may not contain files that contain the text that you specified. For example, .log, .dll, .js, .asp, .xml, .xsl, .hta, .css, .wsh, .cpp, .c, or .h files, or files with no file name extension, may not appear in the search results even if the files contain the text that you specified. This problem may occur even if you specified the file name or type in the All or part of the file name box.
