I re-installed WB (version 3 for XP) yesterday. Had the same thought about kick a** themes coming up. Anyway, d/l-ed a couple and for the first time didn't feel like it was hogging all my cpu cycles. I pulled up task manager performance tab) and check things for a while - all good. But this was one a dual processor P-III 750 with 512MB RAM. Would not think about using it on my laptop. Not yet anyway. I like some of the things it lets you do - like roll-up windows etc. A lot of stuff to get used to though. LS

Yeah - to really appreciate it you have to mess around with some of the configure options. Like you can set up a custom search to use Google (or other) to search the MSFN. Very cool stuff. I have set up a couple - but am still learning about the custom stuff. LS

You guys should check out this WAY COOOOOL search tool. It is called Search Bar. A tiny little app that can sit in the Syst Tray and when you want to do a web search - click it - select the appropriate engine for the search and off it goes. Very fast - Very configurable etc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! h*tp://go.to/searchbar :blueteam :blueteam :blueteam

Everything you can do in Access 2000 you will be able to do in Access 2002 (XP). The changes are more features - like better pivot table support in 2002 etc. If you know Access 2000, you will be able to add to what you know and be proficient in 2002 in short order. LS

M$ was very determined to not make the same mistake with Office XP that they did with Office 2000. They only file format that actually changed was Access. All other apps - the files are interchangeable. If you include (in an XP file) a feature that 2K does not have - the user on 2K will not be able to take advantage of it. The file, however, can be opened and viewed/updated in 2K. LS

To reiterate the previous posts - but perhaps more coherently ( :-) ) Fdisk the whole lot - and get your disk partitions how you want them. The boot from your 'upgrade cd' for XP and do a clean install. You will be asked for your previous OS cd - just sticj the sucker in the CD drive and let it authenticate - and go from there. Once XP is installed - reinstall all your apss etc. and you will be good to go. You really do not want to 'save' anything from your 'me' installation - as 'me' is a big old piece 'o CRAP. LS

You will need to edit 'dialing properties' of you modem. Look for a dialing properties box to edit. It will let you then select whether or not to incluse the area code (without the 1-) on dialing. LS

WHAT UP CHRIS? Just when I was starting to get used to you. I understand that life is full of 'stuff' that we must handle - and I hope yours is full of 'good stuff'. As for myself, I will miss looking for your posts. I will make a promise here and now: Look for ls_dragons posts that will spur our friend/ex-moderator XPerties to respond. Have fun, be safe, and don't forget the board...... LS:angel :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry

noincher & Unimatrix-Zero are both on the right track. M$ wants to generate more $$$$$ so they have to release new software every so often (about 18 months). When what they are planning gets behind schedule - they coble some cr*p together and release that (Windows ME ring a bell?). The Intels and AMDs keep proving Moore's Law is correct - so the HW manufacturers have to release products based on the latest technology to be competitive - even though less than 10% of the 'users' in the world need much more than a Pentium III to do actual work with. (I know - there are plenty of games, and graphics applications - and work - that benefit from the extra horsepower, but like I said, I am talking about the masses of 'office workers' etc). So the PC makes make these new systems, but then none of those 90 percent really need them. M$ to the rescue - a new OS that 'requires' all that horsepower. New PC sell - M$ sells more Windows........ Then - in 18 months, we can start the cycle all over again and every one benefits. Well, except the poor schmuck that buys a new system 15 months into the cycle. :assblast LS

Yeah - I don't think they could monitor via logging IPs -- the vast majority of users have 'dynamic' IP addresses which would make that scenario impossible. LS

To get started just how you want the drive - you can also copy FDISK (can't remember if it is .exe or .com) to your W98 boot disk. The after you boot to the floppy - run fdisk. There, you can delete all existing partitions and set up the 2 you want. You will need at least 3GB for winXP (I think) and then set up the second for all remaining stuff. Then you can format each partition and install XP from there. LS
-
Yeah - I understand that. But - since you have a fresh install - just download the lot. hehehehe - I know - you have to be selective in what you d/l - don't want a bunch of cr*p gobbing things up. LS

Windows XP Remote Assistance vs. Windows 2000 Remote Desktop
LS_Dragons replied to MSNwar's topic in Windows XP
You could always use an off the shelf solution like PC Anywhere.... LS -
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON PLUS! 1. Just install StyleXP and you will get all the themes you want. 2. Who actually uses Screen Savers anyway? 3. Get Powertows for XP and you have more cool stuff than is in Plus anyway. LS

Yo FthrJACK -- just open up the Windows Update thingy (from Help & Support) and then click 'Personalize Windows Update' then - check the box for 'Display the linkto the Windows Update Catalog'. The link will then show up in the left hand pane - and yo should be able to see ALL updates ever published!!! LS

Yes - that would be a good idea dOgg --- but I am guessing right now - you don't have to worry about it getting too cold at night. Aren't temps in the 100's around there lately??? LS
-
Barnettrp --- have you checked your DIMMS - memory stick are supposed to be very finnicky (?) is XP. I have heard of systems that worked just fine under 98 and 2K - but refused to behave under XP until the memory was changed out. Might be cheaper than building a whole system. LS

Babis - it is actually my wife's business. I just used one of her web spaces to host the file noincher needed. This was a temp site to test the web store-front. The real thing can now be found at www.hitechcreations.net LS

I am a HUGE skinning/theme fan. My desktop changes about every other day. Here are a few of those that I have judged worthy to be displayed on one or more of my systems (in order of rating - best first). All are on either themexp.org or neowin.net. crizalysxp ChaNinja LordOfTheRings (gondor color scheme) MacOSX PlasticTube (but not the orange color) Rhodium Edge Scribbles XP bluesteel There are TONS more - but these are some to try -- certified as kooool by LS_Dragons:D
