  1. Have you tried the Group Policy editor? gpedit.msc? Under "User Configuration"/"Start Menu and Taskbar" there are plenty of restrictions; Remove programs on the Settings menu (I don't think you can remove the Settings menu completely, but then I could be wrong!) etc.........
  2. It would seem that you can't remove DNS from a DC. Did you "flushdns" and "registerdns" on your DNS server(s)?
  3. When you ping a computername it is resolved into an IP address by your DNS server, so if this fails then the problem lies with DNS.
  4. Do you have the same settings in the "ipconfig" screen before and after a renew?
  5. Use ... >secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy or >secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy /enforce
  6. If the ping by computername fails, then your DNS server is not behaving. Is there any way you could remove DNS and reinstall?
  7. 10
  8. When you "ping" do you ping using the computer name or IP address? What message do you get? Does it "time out"?
  9. Do you have "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" ticked in the Advanced options of the TCP/IP properties on the clients?
  10. Do you have "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" ticked in the Advanced options of the TCP/IP properties on the clients?
  11. Microsoft's AntiSpyware works for me!
  12. It's probably a Microsoft "feature"!
  13. I'd rather have shingles!
  14. Jesus H Christ, smashly, what the Nelly Furtado are you storing??
  15. A partitioned 200Gb hard drive.
  16. You could probably shoehorn Windows 2000 on it. Failing that, it's time to do the decent thing and chuck it in the bin!
  17. You're not comparing like-for-like. A waste of a poll.
  18. Well, an extra 32Mb RAM won't cost the Earth and Bob's yer uncle!
  19. The setup will fail because you need a minimum of 64Mb RAM.
  20. OK, have you tried ... ipconfig /flushdns and then ... ipconfig /registerdns
  21. Have you enabled Dynamic Updates?
  22. You can prevent users from being able to shutdown the computer using Group Policy.
  23. Always used IE, basically because I can't be arsed to install an alternative.
  24. Also from the same TechNet site ...
  25. Personally, I would have both running DHCP (with different address ranges of course), so that if the Server is offline, at least your clients can get an IP address. Routers don't provide DNS as far as I am aware. Your Server will provide LAN DNS and your ISP will provide Internet DNS.
