You guys are both missing the point... he wants to keep the cache after install. By creating an administrative install point, you loose that ability. @decoy5657 - There is a guide somewhere around here on how to do it, but the last time I checked, the cache is there but Office update doesn't work properly. Your best bet if you want to keep the cache is to install Office on its own, and then install the SP2 update. It'll be a bit bigger on the install disk, but you'll get what you want. There are several threads on this, so all you have to do is search for them.

Any adverse effects with ext mounted DVD drives
Zxian replied to Takeshi's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Yeah, the drives are cheap. At least you've got parts for a second system when you get around to building your next one. -
@ripken204 - Thanks, but that's still 3 ft. The cord that I have is 3 or 4 feet, and it's too long. It's a standard A form jack on the hard drive, and not the B form. It's a very narrow 2.5" mobile hard drive enclosure, and I'm guessing that the B jack is too tall for it. You can see the enclosure that I'm using here..

I'm wondering if I might be able to ask some others for some help in finding this for me... 1FT USB 2.0 MaleA-MaleA Everything else I've found has been either an extension or an A-B cable or something else. I'd like this for my external hard drive, since it usually sits right next to my laptop on the desk. Any website or store would do. Even if they don't do shipping, or the shipping would be a rediculous cost, let me know. I'm starting to wonder if these cables even exist...

The cache is not only for people who have dial up. Accessing a file on your hard drive is faster than ANY internet connection you could have. You can make the cache smaller, but that will mean that only the most recent pages have been cached. The default setting is far to large, but something like 50MB should be a good size.

http://nontroppo.org/-/media/mainbar.htm Another way of getting the menu bar to hide is to alter the pre-defined keyboard shortcut for it. Go to Preferences->Advanced->Shortcuts->Keyboard Setup->Edit Search for "F11", and you'll see an entry that says "Enable Menu Bar | Disable Menu Bar" under the actions. Set the keyboard shortcut (the left box) to whatever you want to use.

Any adverse effects with ext mounted DVD drives
Zxian replied to Takeshi's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
The adaptor just takes the pins on the back of the drive and sticks a USB cable onto them (or so to speak). The enclosure fits around the drive and protects it from dust. TBH, I'd just sell one of the DVD-burners either to a friend or on eBay or something like that. You'll save yourself some money (make some back) and a bit of hassle making everything work when it seems to already. Either that or just keep the drive for your next upgrade system. -
My scanner fell from my chair and is half-living
Zxian replied to Camarade_Tux's topic in Hardware Hangout
Well... if it's just a problem of something being in the way, you could open it up and fix it. It sounds like you've got nothing to loose really, since if it's busted, it's busted, and if it's fixable, then you can fix it. New scanners aren't all that expensive anyways. -
Huh?Nice desktop's everyone! I'll see if I can post up my latest creation when I get home tonight. I'm on one of the small islands outside Vancouver, typing over 3km of wireless internet while watching the seals swim in the water... EDIT - I also need to update that guide...

Blow up? Most of the time your computer will just crash - it's rare for a PSU to blow up from being overloaded. As for the original question - why do you need 3 optical drives? You listed one DVD-ROM and two DVD-RW drives - something that seems a little overboard. If you want to keep the region free drive, put that in your system and just use one of the DVD-RW drives. You even said yourself that it'll just be one of them running at any point, so why have three at all? What are the rest of your system specs? If you're not running crazy high-end PCI-E graphics cards and dual CPU setups, then if the PSU is a decent brand, you should be fine. I had an old Athlon XP 2000+, 1 DVD-RW, 1 CD-RW, and 4 hard drives all running off a 350W Antec PSU, and I never had any problems. Putting the drive in an external enclosure usually doesn't hurt all that much, unless you've got a lot of other traffic on the USB bus (external hard drive, USB flash keys, USB wireless, etc). I doubt that you'd notice the difference in performance of the drive from one to the other, but it adds another "something" to your desk. -
pics of nuhi's dreams? people need to just chill and appreciate the hard work that's gone into this. Good work nuhi.

I've got 1680x1050 on my laptop (128MB X300 Mobility), and Vista is just beautiful. No slowdowns or anything of the sort.

If you want something to download and install on peoples' computers, AutopatcherXP is the way to go. It's a bit big, since the combined updates haven't been optimized the way that RyanVM does his update packs (I'm not sure if you even could do this with post-installation updates), but it'll do the trick if you want a USB key or CD-RW to have all the updates on it.

Microsoft denies WGA kill switch in Windows XP I'm with Biohead on this one. Microsoft has every right to protect their product, but they're going about it in a really backward manner...

@brian10161 - It's a dock of some sort. It's pretty hard to tell which one it is, but there's a list of them here (scroll down to the Docks section).

Sleeving? Do you mean putting mesh around the cables to keep them more organized?Yeah - the mobo's pretty old school. It's the old SocketA platform, but it's done me well for years. In my old case, all the hard drives were padded by rubber grommets to help with vibration, but they also limited conductive heat transfer away from the drives. If anything, the temperature of the drives has gone down a couple of degrees with this setup, since there's more ambient air around the drives. Having an inch or two between the drives provides more of a benefit than the 1/4" that I had with my hard drive cage in my old case. Even the Maxtor (the one I care about the least) which is at the top of the "stack" has an idle temperature of 33C. I haven't tested load temps yet (haven't had the time yet), but I'm assuming that it would do better here than sandwiched between another hard drive and a floppy drive. I'm gonna be keeping an eye on things though. If temps to get too high, then I'll be off to the store for some more Nexus fans.

CMD or BAT to EXE compiler what is the best
Zxian replied to Astalavista's topic in Software Hangout
I can't seem to get through on that site. Did you want to possibly e-mail me the files, and then I can put them on a better mirror for you (and everyone else)? EDIT - Nevermind... it came through... 45 seconds later. Here's a mirror. -
GSM's method works for me with Opera.

CMD or BAT to EXE compiler what is the best
Zxian replied to Astalavista's topic in Software Hangout
I just tried these out, and of the lot, I like ExeScript the best. The default EXE is 16kb in size however, but you can UPX that down to 8KB. I think that if you're not paranoid about the pop-up Window, then the freeware programs are the best. Otherwise, ExeScript seems to be the better of the payware versions. -
Or memtest86+ even if Windows doesn't install. You can download the ISO from the Memtest86+ webpage.
