popups, programs intalling themselves, agh!
Zxian replied to zildjian7akid's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
You've got two choices depending on how bad the situation is and how much time you want to put into it. A - Download malware cleaners and try to clean your system from all the crap that's on it. B - Reinstall Windows and make sure that this doesn't happen again. More information on both can be found in the Malware Prevention forum... where this topic is moving. -
Good work Shindo_Hikaru. The more information people give us, the more we're able to help.

That 40C number seems to be floating around the internet a lot, but I've never really seen where it holds it's merrit. The thermal specs of all processors indicate that they can tolerate much higher temperatures, and it just seems like people are overly paranoid about frying their CPUs.

I've actually used every single browser out there to upgrade the firmware. The process is pretty much browser independent. Upgrading to Thibor is pretty much bullet proof. Just clear the settings to factory defaults, upgrade, clear settings, and then work from there. You can never really go wrong with that method. Just a warning - Thibor does NOT support the WAG54G. Upgrading the firmware to the latest revision from Linksys might help though. If not - it's probably a faulty device and should be RMA'd.

HyperWRT + Thibor 15c - Hands down. I've been running this for 3 weeks straight on my WRT54GL v1.1 with no problems whatsoever. From the stats page, I've transferred over 400GB of data through the router in that time and there have been no lockups, wireless dropouts, or anything of the sort. It's got more options than you can shake a stick at to! Thibor's HyperWRT Page

Yeah - the MySQL error was there this morning. DH was hit by a power surge recently and is working to restore the servers. But the site looks fine for me in IE... see?

@DL - So true... who wouldn't want to take advantage of a guy like him?

Arctic Silver does improve over a short period of time, and then reaches it's optimal working conditions. Like ripken said - just wait. What is your case temperature? The only way that you'll be able to lower your CPU temp is by either lowering the ambient temperature in the case (i.e. improve airflow, add more intake/exhaust fans), or by getting a better heatsink. I've never heard of the heatsink that you're using, but the Scythe Ninja seems to be the king of cooling at the moment.

It's gonna be much more than just a blog. I'm going to transfer all my guides and other site content (old site) to this one.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I just signed up for the basic plan over a DreamHost. I definately don't have much on my site yet, but I only managed to get things up and running today. Zxian.org Keep looking here to see what new things come out of this. I'm really excited to have my own webspace where I can do just about anything...

IE Not Respecting My Code
Zxian replied to gamehead200's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
The site works just fine in Opera as well. It seems to be another one of those IE only bugs. -
Hope you've had a great day!

You're looking for Remote Installation Services (RIS). There's a forum here dedicated towards unattended RIS installs, so that might help point you in the right direction.

I think what you're looking for is Wake On Lan (or WOL). The network adaptors themselves need to have this feature to be able to make use of it, and you'll need to configure it for each machine, but it'll do what you ask. Servers (and some routers) can enable WOL on a schedule or manually. Once the computer has started up, you can push your updates as usual. If you've got the Windows XP power settings correct, the computers should go back into hibernation after a specified duration.

You'll have to re-partition your hard drive like you want it with a third-party program. There are several free ones out there, but Acronis Disk Director is the best one I've found (note: it's payware). Does your desktop XP CD give you the option to partition your drives, or does it just start installing? If it's the first one, you could start from scratch and just format the whole lot and go from there. You could do that in any case with a third-party tool, but having it on the XP CD is a nice feature.

With what little I've used of these programs, I'd have to say that Windows Desktop search is the best so far. The fact that all the configuration for Google Desktop Search is done through the browser is a bad idea, because you're now relying on the user's browser to be compatible with your setup (which beta releases might not be). Copernic Desktop search didn't seem to have anything special about it, and the toolbar integration was strange at best. You have to select what you want to search for before you can type it in... The fact that WDS is tightly knit with WIndows isn't really a bad thing at all. It makes it feel like it's a part of the OS - not a separate application. If I want to find something, I'd like to be able to just go and type it in - not have to open up a completely new window. I'm gonna keep using WDS for a while and see how things go. I just really wish that there was a way to remove the tray icon...

Nexus fans are the best comprimise between silence and airflow that I've found. I've got an 80mm SilenX fan and an 80mm Nexus fan, and their both pretty much silent, but the Nexus fan creates a lot more airflow. And you're worried about 40C? That's well below all limits for temperature. I wouldn't be too worried if I were you.

Usually a router will give DHCP lease for a period of a day or two. If you check your router settings, it'll tell you what clients have connected over the past while.

Well... no need to host it then...

Same... for the purpose of testing or playing around with Linux, sure... but for recovery CDs, I always use plain WinPE or Reatogo (way better than BartPE). Reatogo is much easier to use than any other recovery CD out there since it uses Explorer as it's shell, and has most of the common Windows XP tools available to you. It's truly a bootable Windows XP environment - not just a WinXP based environment. Not to detract from the topic... but there are other alternatives to just Linux bootable CDs. It's just that most people don't know about them and they use strange UIs.

I'm wondering why people say that Nero 7 is "crap". It's a really objective opinion without much backup. Like I said before, I've never had any problems with any of the Nero 7 lineup, and considering that unless there's something seriously flawed with v6, it's not going to get updated like v7 will be.

Seems like the great Paul also got the short end of the stick when it comes to WGA... Link

Draft 802.11n routers - Am I missing something?
Zxian replied to Zxian's topic in Networks and the Internet
True... With most desktop setups I just have the "bigger heatsink" mentality... for my laptop on the other hand, all I can say is I love Centrino. Power, mobility, ease of mind - what more could you ask for?
