  1. I can't agree more. As a person who made and developed (and got frustrated with - I'm sure) XPlode, Wraith knows first hand what he's talking about. Making a product that can do everything never works. If you can make one thing that works really well at what it was meant to be, then it'll be a huge success. btw - glad to see you around again Wraith. I'm still using XPlode for my UACDs.
  2. Yes, they are under load for a longer period of time, but they're definately not in a great amount of tension. I've got two 3/4" bands for each hard drive, something that should be plenty considering the weight of a typical hard drive. Granted - the life of rubber does decrease with heat, but from what I've read, checking on the elastics every 6-8 months is plenty. The case is also sitting on the floor 24/7. If ever I were to move it a great amount, I'd shut it down and remove the hard drives altogether. You are right about the shock and all, but this isn't my LAN party rig. Here's a pic of how I've suspended the drives so you've got a visual picture. It's not like they're hanging from loose strings, but see for yourself. The elastics aren't actually touching anything underneath the drives - just the edges on the sides. I considered that for this case as well, if I needed it, but looking from the construction of it, the walls are quite thick which helps with reducing the vibrations in the first place. Once I grab my new northbridge and CPU heatsinks, we'll see if I need that at all. It's something I've been considering for my old case. I'm getting an old Athlon 1GHz system that I'm gonna turn into a test setup/plaything (something for dicking around with Linux or my UA installs), and I'll be working to make that thing as unnoticable as possible. Nope - the power cables from the Phantom reach all the devices without any troubles at all. I haven't cleaned things up yet, but here's a picture of the innards of the case at the moment. I know it's messy, but it's 11PM and I just got in from dinner and beer with friends. I'm not sure if it was meant to be for a server, but the Coolermaster site has pictures of dual and quad CPU setups inside the case. The many placements of fans and grilled surfaces all over also point towards it being for a high-end-high-heat system.

    Paging File

cluberti's post is what I was talking about. And like he said - you probably won't notice the difference. If you come across the situation where you do need a pagefile, then you will notice the performance hit a lot. RAM, Virtual Memory, Pagefile, and all that stuff is also a good read for some underlying information about the virtual memory system in XP.
  4. I'm not using regular brown elastics for the hard drives. The material is the same stuff that you'd find in your boxer shorts. I've had some pairs of boxers last me 4 years with the same stretchyness. Yeah - I'm looking at the Zalman passive northbridge cooler, and possibly (i.e. if I can find the money) the Thermalright TI-97. The reviews on that thing are nuts, and I'm not sure if the Zalman will fit in my current setup with the Zalman 3100+ heatsink I've got now. I'm getting about 42C idle, 47C load right now with a slow slow 80mm SilenX fan, and the TI-97 has apparently blown everything else out of the water. Like I said - more pics later.
  5. Download TweakUI. You can enable taskbar grouping, but only allow the "collection" to happen after you've got 100 windows or so. I'm guessing that by then you'd need it anyways.
  6. Well - I just got myself a new toy. It's been 3 weeks waiting for it to arrive from back order, but it's finally here! First impressions - this thing is HUGE. I'm 6'4" (193cm), and it comes up just past my knees. Why am I even trying to explain this… just see for yourself. That there is sitting beside my old case - the Antec 2650. The old case was filling up with drives and started to get a bit cramped... When this case first came out, I drooled at the thought of having it. Such well defined lines, such wicked contrast of black and brushed aluminum - WOW! Not to mention the rediculous amounts of storage that you can pack in here. It's got space for eleven 5.25" drives, and it comes with an adaptor that turns three 5.25" bays into four 3.5" bays - with fan mounting and all. So you could potentially hold twelve 3.5" drives in there, and still have room for a DVD burner, and a-soon-to-be HD-DVD drive. B) Another big plus for this case - you can change the back and side panels to make the whole thing BTX compliant. Any new motherboard that I buy in the next few years will fit in this case. Toss a new Antec Phantom 500 in there, and I've got all the juice I could shake a stick at, all with a completely silent power supply. The eleven drive bays gave me the ability to do something else - suspend my hard drives using elastics. "Why on earth would you want to do that?", you might ask. By suspending the drives, you remove a direct solid contact between the drives and the case. This prevents the vibrations from the hard drives from resonating the case walls, making your system quieter. I'm still working out all the details, but I've got my four drives going, and you've really got to put your ear up to them to hear them spinning at all. I'll see if I can grab pictures later on tonight. So far - the only downside I've noticed is that the Northbridge fan is noticeably louder than before. This could be either because my hard drives aren't causing as much noise now (they used to be the loudest part of my setup), or because this case has more mesh surfaces to it, meaning that high-pitched whine can make it's way out. No bother - a $10 trip to NCIX to pick up one of these and I should be good to go. For more pictures - have a look here. I've put a CD or a jewel case in some of the pictures so you have a reference as to how big this thing is. And yes - those pictures are being hosted out of the computer that you see. Now... to organize those cables again...

    Paging File

Take your computer set it to no pagefile. Install just 128 or 256MB of RAM and startup. Use performance counters or Task Manager to see how much RAM is being used (Total - Available). Install more RAM and repeat. The amount of used RAM increases as you have more, and yet the rest of the system stays the same. That "missing" memory is on your hard drive.

    Paging File

No no and no. This is just wrong. Windows NEEDS a pagefile. Everything that you do in Windows requires the presence of a pagefile. Even when you've set things to "No pagefile", there still is temporary disk space reserved for Windows to page unused portions of memory to disk.
  10. Maybe reflashing the BIOS and clearing all settings to factory defaults might be a good idea. After that, you can go ahead and see if you can set your settings accordingly.

    Paging File

Man... why does this question keep coming up? Just do a search for "pagefile" in the XP forums and you'll find a LOT of topics with this already. I've already written about the whole "pagefile-on-separate-partition" here. Read it well. If you don't get what it says, read it again slowly... System Managed will do you just fine. If you do want to make your pagefile size max=min, then make it a size that is at least the size of your RAM+50MB (can't remember if that's the exact number). That extra space is required for WIndows to do a memory dump. If you're ever unsure about the size of your pagefile, then you probably shouldn't be playing with it. Also - the whole "you don't need a pagefile if you've got over XX GB of RAM" argument is just wrong. 32-bit Windows can address 4GB of RAM. If you've got that much or more, then you're probably running a server or a very serious CAD/graphics workstation.
  12. Nope - that's upload. For some reason, when I've got samurize running with all the various parts updating, that's how much bandwidth it takes to send me the refreshed image. I think it has to do with the fact that Samurize refreshes the entire desktop, and not just a portion of it. That combined with 16-bit, and 1152x864 makes it a hefty transfer. I'm gonna redo my desktop but with AveDesk this time. So far it's helping the speed of everything a lot.

    hi

Welcome to MSFN. (BTW - your sig is too big. Make it smaller or else it's gonna go bye-bye. )
  15. Welcome to MSFN.
  16. Glad you've found the site to be of help! Welcome to MSFN!
  17. Not from sunny London, but welcome to MSFN!
  18. You can find a simple, cheap Logitech optical mouse for about $10 - not that much money. The bottom of the barrel, open-box stuff should be alright as well. If you're not crazy about gaming or the like, then any mouse will do just fine. Fixing mice is troublesome at best. You're probably better off just buying a new one.
  19. Musical Angel Wallpaper Enjoy.
  20. Whoa... harunaksoy's desktop is gonna be hard to beat... I just figured I'd play around with my Remote Desktop and see what I could come up with. It's nothing much, but it's at least a little something for me to start with. Clicky for biggy B)
  21. Thanks for the answers Martijn. That's pretty much what I had been thinking already - but I wasn't quite sure.
  22. I'm just trying to figure out what exactly goes on when I put these into my PHP files. At first reaction, they're very similar, both incorporating the target file into the current file. Just a few questions though: 1) If an include fails, will the script continue? What about for require? (I'm guessing no) 2) Is the code from the included file simply injected into the current file, or is it parsed? 3) Is one preferable to the other? I've been playing around with some basic PHP, but I seem to be getting stuck on various places where I'm including header files or general helper functions. Thanks in advance.
  23. SyncBack is another possible choice. It's what I'm using right now. I was using Allway Sync, but their freeware licence is only valid for "moderate" use (less than 20,000 files in a month ). SyncBack makes the selections easy, and can be scheduled with great ease.
  24. One of my friends had this problem as well - but only when Outlook was running. I'm not sure if he found a solution to this though.
  25. If you've already got a full iPod and just want something for the 1-2 hour workout routine, then go for the shuffle. Honestly - that's the only case where I would ever recommend getting a shuffle. Other than that, they suck. The fact that you don't have a screen just annoys me, and since I've got 28GB of music and only 512MB to fill on my shuffle (it was free from TD), it's kinda a pain. I'm waiting until later this summer when 6G iPods come out, so that the 5G versions take a price cut. I don't need full video support - my laptop does that just fine.
