@Ophiel X - I've got the WGA tool on my computer and I've got no problems whatsoever. None of my friends that I talk to have had problems with it either. Aside from when it was first installed, I haven't seen it appear since. If you've got problems with the utility - contact Microsoft. @LLXX - Yes you own all the hardware in your computer. What you decide to do with it is your decision. The licence that you bought from Microsoft does NOT give you the right to do whatever you want with Windows. It gives you the right to use Windows. It's like giving some one the keys and full access to use a car, but they don't own the car itself. If you don't like it, go buy a different car. As for the comparisons with CD-burning programs - it's totally different. With a legal copy of Windows, you shouldn't have any troubles in the end. If you've got an illegal copy of Windows, then the tool does its job. A CD burning program can be used for just about any purpose - legal or illegal. How would you two like it if millions of people started stealing your product? The post stays the way it is.

I'm going to make the executive decision to remove this since it could be used to allow illegal copies of Windows to be run, which would be breaking the Windows XP EULA and the forum rules. I don't personally mind certain mods or removals, but when it comes to a validation check from Microsoft about a Microsoft product, don't tell people how to remove it. If you're having troubles, contact Microsoft Customer Support.

I've already got the notification balloons disabled, but I'd really just like to remove the icon from the system tray in the first place.

No need to close - but glad you found your solution.

There was the initial confusion and driver errors when SP2 first came out, but in the past year, I've never found a computer that either couldn't "handle" SP2 or had problems with it. I even installed it on a PII 450 with 128MB of RAM a couple of months ago. Sure it was a little slow, but no errors, no crashes - nothing out of the ordinary. Microsoft is not driving people away from the OS. They're telling people that if they want continued support, they should get with the times and update to SP2. There are so many reasons for it, and so very very few against it now. Have you tried slipstreaming SP2 into your installation source? This (along with RyanVM's packs) is hands down the easiest way to install an up-to-date system with minimal headaches.

The best way to get a CD is to contact your computer manufacturer and request an installation CD. They might charge you a small fee, but if you want to stay legit, this is pretty much what you have to do.

I remember there being some discussion about a reputation system a while back and it was turned down for a number of reasons. One of the first that I could think of is that if I wanted to cheat the system, I could make a new account and use that to boost this account's reputation. Simply put, it's hard to keep track of and manage. On the other hand, if there's enough support from the other mods/admins, then we can see what comes up.

AFAIK, Word can save a document directly to an HTML page. I'm saying that it can - I do NOT recommend using it for the long run. The HTML that Word generates is just horrible, and I can guarantee you that if you keep using it, you'll find that it doesn't look the same in all browsers. Just as a comparison, I re-wrote this page for my boss (yes - that's him) a couple of months ago. The original document was made in Word and saved as HTML. It's size was 14KB, and there were some WIERD rendering bugs in Firefox. The new document, which is plain and simple HTML, looks the exact same and is only 6KB. Not only do you make a smaller file (faster download), but the code is easier for you to update later. If the document isn't too long (and doesn't have a complicated layout), then I'd suggest just taking a little time (a few hours is all it takes) to read up on HTML. There's a very good tutorial and resource here.

I've got a few network drives set up on my laptop to connect to various shares on my server. Everytime that I boot and I'm not on my home network, I get the little icon in my system tray that tells me that it couldn't connect to the network drives. I already know that if I'm not at home, I won't be able to connect to my desktop... Does anyone know if it's possble to remove this and how to do it? Thanks in advance.

By using the expand command. Something like... expand D:\i386\ipconfig.ex_ C:\Windows\system32\ipconfig.exe You can even expand it to another location and try running it from there. Some of the basic commandline based programs in Windows are standalone (ping, ipconfig, etc).

Have you looked at AveDesk? It's what a lot of people use to emulate a LOT of features from Macs. The next version is in testing right now, and it's pretty wicked - lots of bug fixes and just generally a lot easier to use.

Hey now... my picture is sideways for a reason. What about health?

If it were my next computer, I'd either get the Sonata II or the SLK3700. Both have plenty of room, and are very very quiet.

The whole point of RAID is that you're using 2 or more hard drives to act as one. If you've only got one disk, then it's not RAID. Simple as that. Here's a good website that explains the various kinds of RAID arrays you can set up. - Link As for the 1 disk "array" - it won't work for RAID0. There's no way to start striping the data "from now on" when you've added a new drive. You can, however, typically build a RAID1 array from a single disk by simply telling your RAID controller to copy the files from the old hard drive to the new one. Just make sure you remember which is which!

Yeah, the hard drives I've got are now the noisiest part of my computer. I just picked up two 80GB drives for a RAID1 backup array, and things are starting to get kinda packed. I've got access to my department's machine shop, so I'm gonna make myself an aluminum mounting bracket for my hard drives where they'll be suspended by rubber bands. That's 4 hard drives I've got now...

Speedfan with AveDesk and SysStats will give you a nice looking item on your desktop with all your hardware info.

[Question] Make USB Drives appear on desktop when plugged in (like OSX
Zxian replied to bledd's topic in Windows XP
Well... a work around with AveDesk would be to manually assign a drive letter to your USB drive - let's say it's X:. Now you make a PidlShortcut that points to X:. There's an option to hide the desklet when it's not connected. Note - you'll have to disable the automounter addin to not get the CD drives to work. -
My only problem with the SilenX fans is that they advertise rediculous specifications. I can tell you that the SilenX fan you linked to does NOT have a 42CFM flow rate. Also, they did a lot of spamming around the Silent PC Review Forums, falsely advertising their products and generally "beefing up" their stories.

ServeU FTP is another choice. It's what I've known my previous employers to work with over the past couple of years. Filezilla server is good, but I don't think that it stands up to a corporate network (i.e. very heavy traffic). There is a reason why you pay for some things, and it's generally because bigger companies are willing to shell out the dough.
-
What is your budget? That would help us find a case that works best for you. I've always stood by Antec cases. They're well built, quiet, and generally have all the features that you need (when you find the right sized case).

Just thought I'd share the information for anyone else interested - Nexus fans are simply awesome. I just picked up one of these for my desktop, since I had discovered that the 120mm exhaust fan was the loudest part of my setup. I popped it in and all of a sudden things are much quieter. It's now my CPU fan that's the loudest... so I take the 80mm SilenX fan that I got for free from a friend and put it over my heatsink in place of the stock 92mm Zalman fan (with speed reducing resistor). Almost complete silence. The only things that I can actually hear now are my hard drives. I'm running Prime95 as we speak, and there's absolutely NO change in CPU or system temps from before (40C idle, 46C load). For a silent Athlon XP 2000+ TbredA system, I think that's pretty killer. As for the airflow, you can never really judge by the numbers that they give on the box, but the "hand-test" tells me that the new Nexus fan is just as good as the old, loud Antec fan. I'm definately sticking with Nexus fans from now on. Dead quiet and yet still move a decent amount of air.

General Questions On Hard Drive
Zxian replied to niteghost's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Easiest way of doing this: 1) Install the 100GB drive. Install XP SP2 (slipstreamed) and install drivers as necessary. 2) Shutdown the computer and install the 400GB drive. 3) When you're in Windows, just go to Disk Management and select the partitions that you want. You'll be able to make one 400GB partition if you'd like without any problems. -
Whoops - Sorry everyone. I typed in "Addon" in the URL instead of "addon". Link is now fixed.
