  1. Best place to start learning how to drive is the country. Less obstacles, less hazards to you and others. Once the driver is comfortable with handling the car (i.e. has a feel for the controls), then move on to the city. It's a big change having to deal with traffic and stupid, unpredictable drivers... Oh... and always, always, always shoulder-check!!!! I can't stand it when people just move lanes right into you...
  2. I've heard that sometimes when you spread the paste, it just becomes a mess all over the CPU...by just putting a bead and then gently rotating it while pressing, it spreads the paste more evenly. Any thoughts on this?
  3. Very useful... 1.5 years down the road and none of my 1,024,000 pixels are dead! :D Thanks!
  4. I think there's some confusion here. ripken204, if your resolution is 1280x800 then you have a proper 16:10 aspect ratio widescreen display. For the actual dimensions, you can figure them out with some simple math. If you want, I can probably post up my work, but the end result is that the screen would be W: 36.4cm = 14.3 in H: 22.7cm = 8.95 in As for the resolution, it depends on what you buy. WXGA is specified to be 1280x800, which I find the most comfortable for reading. Anything higher than that and you start having to strain to read text. I've got a 17" CRT monitor as well set to 1280x960 and I have no troubles going from one screen to the other.
  5. Strange... I'd suggest doing all the usual checks. AV, spyware, etc etc. Use online scanners on top of your AV program that you have installed (you do have one installed, right? ). Just to be sure, post a HijackThis log in the Malware Prevention forum to make sure that you're clean. It helps to get that out of the way since malware can have strange effects on computers.
  6. Thanks for the reply. I also find while a bit more intuitive in terms of "infinite" loops. The for loop is something to be done a specific number of times, like parsing through an array or the like. Cheers!
  7. Do you have a home network (i.e. a router)? When you loose connectivity, can you ping your own computer? Open a command window and type in ping localhost You should get 4 successful pings all 1ms or less. Once this is done, can you ping elsewhere? Does the connection come on again if you disable the connection and then re-enable it? If it's an ethernet, make sure that Windows isn't turning it off to "save power". Under Device Manager, go to your ethernet card's properties. Under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". See if that helps.
  8. It's something I've been wondering as well... One of the reasons why Apple has been dominant in the image/video development market is because their computers were much better optimized for that kind of work. If they switch to an x86 processor, then what will be the point of buying an Apple computer aside from the OS? I think that the whole computer itself will still be managed by Apple, so their hardware driver database will still be much smaller than Windows', so the idea of porting OSX over to your run-of-the-mill PC might still be a bit far fetched.
  9. I don't think it's really fair to look at this and say, "Well, Christianity must be wrong because it's an evil religion." I happen to believe that God created what we call Christianity, not a person or people. However, there have been many people who have tried to play God in the past. This does not make it right for them or even justifiable. Many have used Christianity for their political gain and powerful. For instance, pre-Martin Luther, no person other than a cleric or monk could read or touch the Bible nor participate in the Sacrements. This was clearly wrong and very much against Biblical teaching. Jesus really lambasted these same kinds of "religious", legalistic, overly-fundamental people by calling them a "brood of vipers." (It was 2000 years ago so give the Bible a break on the cheesy language here .) Remember this...we are very imperfect people and are very prone to screwing it up every time. Enough for now. Rick <>< <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Christianity is in any way evil. All I'm saying is, as you pointed out, it has been used for personal benefit and power. If you look into some of the discussion revolving the second and third Matrix movies, there were a lot of overtones referring to religion as a way to control the masses. This is all that I was getting at with my example of historical scientists. They were criticized for their findings, and because the Church had control, they were hated by the masses. Just to put myself in the right place in others' minds, everyone has a right to their own opinion. There's no arguing that. I think that passing ideas and beliefs back and forth is very constuctive because it allows us to understand others as well as ourselves much better. Keep it friendly and everyone goes home happy.
  10. I've got a 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) display on my laptop and it's fantastic. Text is very readable. If you go for higher resolutions, it becomes more difficult to read, IMO. The widescreen also allows you to have two documents open side by side for comparison or reference. Very handy if you're learning something new and need your reference document open while you're writing your real one. Oh... and the obvious advantage of widescreen movies is there as well.
  11. Here comes the usual question... did this happen all of a sudden? Have you made any changes recently to your settings/programs? Have you tried patching the UXTheme.dll file? I know the default Luna theme is supposed to work by default, but it's something that you can still try.
  12. Those folders are compressed folders. Unless they are folders that you specifically don't want compressed, I would leave them. If you do want to uncompress them: -Right-click on the folder and select Properties -Click on "Advanced" button -Uncheck box next to "Compress contents to save disk space" If you simply want to change the colour of the folders, download TweakUI from Microsoft here. Dig through the settings and you'll find an option to change the colours. Hope this helps!
  13. As I've been reading through the MSDN for code tips, I've often seen "infinite" loops in C++ written in the form for(;;) { // Do stuff here } Whereas I've always been used to writing them as while(1) { // Do stuff here } Either that or while(true). Of course, within the loop there's a method of breaking out of it, either a break statement or a return. Is there a reason why the MSDN examples use the for loop instead of the while loop? Does it complile "cleaner" or faster? Or is it simply a matter of preference? I'm just curious if someone knew the answer.
  14. Why would you want this chip in a desktop? It's gonna be designed for mobile use with the next generation Centrino laptops. Dual-core and shared caches, all while only using ~25W = massive portable power.
  15. I've got a Centrino Laptop that will do me well for work purposes for the next few years. My desktop is an old Athlon T-bird though... I'm probably gonna buy an Athlon64 as a main replacement and make the old comp a proper server.
  16. Just pointing out (not to stop this thread... I think it's going quite well) but the title of the thread was regarding a meteor hitting the earth, and the discussion has turned into a good religious debate. I believe in what I see and what I've experienced. Everything that I've seen so far in my life I have been able to reason with science and math (Mathematics was traditionally thought of as an art - interesting that it's used extensively in science). While Christianity (in its many forms) was the dominant ruling power in Europe, scientists were punished and executed for discoveries that ran against the readings of the bible. For example when Copernicus spoke of the idea that the Earth was not the centre of the universe, he was accused of blasphemy without even so much as a chance to prove his findings. There are several other examples of astronomers in particular who were also treated in this manner. One of the parts from Christianity (for example) that I don't like is how two people who analyzed the Bible found completely different lineages between David and Jesus. The number of generations found by one was nearly double the other (45ish-25ish, I can't remember exactly), and neither had any common relatives. I just don't like how people can derive such different conclusions from one reference, and this is what millions of people follow. As for proving that an atom exists, yes we actually can do that, and we can prove that even smaller structures exist (read up on Quarks, neutrinos, etc). As for other things that we do not know of yet (such as how gravity works), physicists are working on various theories to discover the truth about it, instead of simply giving up and saying that "someone else took care of it for us". The constant question of "why" is what drives us forward to find new ideas and methods. Without the "why" none of us would have a computer to sit infront of to discuss this in this manner. I'll end this here to keep things short (as DigeratiPrime said). I can always add more later.
  17. Umm... here. That's why you can't ask. Just go out to your local computer store and buy it for $5 as undeadsoldier said.
  18. Hehe... a lot of people here like FPS games, eh? My top 5: Diablo II: LOD StarCraft: BroodWar Counter Strike 1.6 Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 Unreal Tournament (the original... it's not worth it without Assault) I know these games are pretty old... but so is my gaming rig. The games will still kill off plenty of time...
  19. Just to avoid confusion... are you running WindowsXP or Windows 2000? I think you're running XP and have the Windows classic theme on, which looks the same as the appearance from Win2K. Have you checked if the Themes service is running? Start->Run Type in services.msc. Double-click on the Themes service and set the startup type to Automatic and click on the Start button to start the service. You should now be able to select the Luna theme from the Display properties dialog box.
  20. It's RoyalFour. Google it and you'll find it. It's got several colour variations in the pack if you want to experiment a bit.
  21. I've always had Linksys routers, and they've never failed me. One advantage to Linksys routers is that the firmware for the routers is licenced under the GPL, so it's open source. This means that you can download the source code and modify it to your liking. You can also find modified firmware that provides more features than that released by Linksys.
  22. I second the recommendation of a hub with a separate power supply. If you run the USB-powered hub to charge your iPod, you'll get very poor response from anything else connected to the hub.
  23. Well... I got the Zalman. It's the first heatsink I've installed, but it seems like everything went well (seems... again, I don't know...). I removed the old heatsink and used isopropanol to clean of the thermal pad that came with the stock cooler. Once the CPU was shiny clean, I put a small bead of AS5 on the middle of the CPU. I put the new heatsink on and pressed down, rotating it about 2deg both ways to spread out the AS5. I put the clamp on and put the mobo back in the case and connected everything back together. With brand new Arctic Silver 5 and the fan running on silent mode (the slowest setting) my CPU is 1C cooler than it was (at idle - haven't stressed it yet), and the computer is a lot quieter... I've heard that Arctic Silver needs to be "Cured" or something for it to reach it's maximum thermal conductivity, so I'm gonna look into that and see if I can make a program that will run on a schedule to heat and cool the CPU. Just thought I'd let everyone know.
  24. Why would you do this? Laptop hardware is finicky as it is... you don't really want to go messing with it if you don't have to. Sorry to say that if it was, it's not anymore. By opening up the laptop, you've voided your warranty. Just because it will boot, doesn't mean it's fully compatible. If you have a spare laptop hard drive, I would try installing Windows again. Maybe windows is still trying to run with your old processor. Unless you really know what you're doing, you typically don't want to mess with the internals of your laptop. They're specifically put together by the manufacturers and aren't as cross compatible as computers built from parts.

    Mindows Project

Aegis, first of all -- this is a great idea. Secondly, I was wondering how exactly can I do this? Using nLite? I read your first post but I really don't understand how you plan to reduce Windows to that size. Is this a post-installation thing or is it done on a source share and burned to a CD? Thanks for your work. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Have you even bothered to read the entire thread? Aegis has made a batch file for this and posted it here. SEARCH!!!
