If you want a really good (relatively) cheap laser printer, the Samsung ML-1740 is a good choice. About 5 friends and I have them (after my recommendations to them) and they're rock solid. The only down side to them is that the driver configuration can be a pain in Linux, but with Windows it's a snap.

7-zip installers are simply repackaged regular installers. The advantage is that the size of the final installer is smaller, meaning that you'll be able to fit more of them onto a CD. Silent installers are a bit different. They are installers that have all the options entered ahead of time. That way, when you go to run the installer, it simply installs the program with all the options you set, without asking you for input. To run either, simply double click on the .exe. Hope that helps.

Just for clarity - Does Windows work fine before installing drivers, or does the problem happen after the first boot of Windows (just before you see the desktop for the first time)? If it happens after you've installed your drivers, then that's where your problem lies. Since you said that Linux works, all signs point towards bad drivers or a bad installation of the drivers. Try downloading the latest drivers in advance before installing XP (burn them onto a separate CD) and then installing those instead of the ones that came with your hardware (probabaly a CD for each part).

I'm getting a warning (shown below) whenever Outlook starts and connects to my IMAP inbox. Is there any way for Outlook not to bother me with this? I've tried to find the setting for this, but no luck. It's my university e-mail, and most of their systems are running UNIX, so I'm not sure if there's any reason for a security certificate. Thanks in advance.

Yes, but only if you have one of them. Chances are that the virus uses this name to confuse less informed users.

BAH!!!! They try to throw that stupid stupid stupid Yahoo toolbar at you by default. I hate it when they do that... *grumble* Thanks for the update.

Thanks Alanoll!!! I hope you already know this, but your work is appreciated by many many many people.

Eep... Just hope that no remnants are left over from it...

@Black - lmfao... Nice...

Too many installs to be seen on the Runonce list?

@Orsi - I think you're getting confused as to how things happen. Re-read Manuarii's post earlier for a bit of clarification. The code that you have isn't going to get you very far... -
Yes and no. They're still the same company, and the record company definately has the internal influence to install the anti-piracy software on new computers. It's the big-brother approach that everyone hates...

@Black - I don't know if that pic is allowed... You should at least put a not-work-safe warning on it. (There's more curved there than just the sidebar) @spenxa - Nice setup. Simplistic.

Just a little rant on software that installs other stuff
Zxian replied to Synapse's topic in Software Hangout
Yeah... I understand what you're saying. That's why I always install all software to VMware first and then make sure that I can uninstall it properly afterwards. Unless its clean (no addons) and it uninstalls nicely, I don't use it. -
Have you looked in the RegTweaks section of the UA forums? I'm pretty sure the answer is lying in one of the reg files that people have posted. Either that, or you could use RegShot to see the before/after of your registry when you change the view mode to List.

It should be F8. You should also try manually searching for anything Google related on your hard drive and see if you can find something suspicious. Either that, or the uninstaller didn't complete properly. You could try reinstalling GDS and then uninstalling it again.

Thank you! I'm hoping to redo the layout again sometime soon. There's something about the way it is now that just bugs me. Oh... by the way. The guy being circled by the fish - that's me. B)

Download TweakUI from Microsoft. There's an option in there - "Common Places" is what it's called.

Ah... yes... laptops. That would definately move you to an external drive then... Most DVD players have an easier time reading DVD-R than DVD+R. Buying the more expensive one will also mean that you'll be able to read both formats, while the cheaper would only be able to read DVD+R. I've got a 16x burner at home, but most of my discs are 4x anyways. A full DVD backup still only takes about 20 minutes to burn. I usually just set it up, go grab something to eat, and it's done when I get back.

@XPero - It's the bitmap that you replaced in batmeter.dll - See here I personally don't favour it myself... it's a bit hard to read for me. I just reshacked the old one back...

NEED to recover data from deleted partition....

I'd recommend Test Disk. It saved my butt a few days ago... I thought I lost everything on my laptop. Test Disk brought it all back. -
This is a question about computer hardware, right? So it should go in the Hardware Hangout. If you put your questions in the right place, you'll get much better answers. To answer your question, the second burner only supports writing to DVD+R and DVD+RW. The first one can do both DVD-R and DVD+R. For more information on the two, look here. If you want to play them back on a DVD player, I'd suggest using DVD-R discs. As for the speeds, you'll end up burning at whatever speed is lower - the burner or the disc. If you've got a 12x disc and a 2.4x burner, you'll burn at 2.4x. If you've got a 16x burner and 4x discs, you'll burn at 4x. And so on. Finally, I'll add that if you've got a semi-new desktop (3 years old or newer), I'd recommend getting an internal DVD burner. Once installed, it's a lot more convenient. If you need help with installing it, just google for guides. There are plenty out there.

Yeah Hahaha.... poor prathapml. That's 7KB less space for pr0n on his hard drive... J/K buddy.

I use my laptop for all kinds of things. VMware, Photoshop, Outlook, surfing, music, chatting, and anything inbetween. Usually, I'm running a VM with 512MB of RAM while chatting and watching videos. Sure, the memory available at that point is low, but that's to be expected. Oh... and I reboot once every 2 weeks. In between it's hibernation. On startup, as per the performance monitor, I've got 734MB of 1024MB of RAM free. That includes the ATI Control Center, as well as everything else I need on startup. %Commited bytes in use sits at 10%. I can tell you for a fact that Windows is the best OS in terms of all around processor scheduling (at least for consumer OS's) and memory management. In one of my computer science courses (on Operating Systems, imagine that), we tested the processor scheduling of WindowsXP, Solaris, and Debian Linux. The program was designed to create 10 copies of itself (so you'd end up with 10 instances of the program), all with the same priority. Then, each instance was to keep adding 1 for a period of time (2 minutes maybe). When they were done, they would output the number they reached onto the screen (terminal, command line, whatever). Windows: All 400,000 +/- 300 Solaris: Min 250,000 Mean 420,000 Max 650,000 Debian: Min 70,000 Mean 380,000 Max 900,000 You can see that Windows does the best job in distributing the processor load amongst the 10 instances of the program. There are several other tests you can do to compare the performance across OS's, but for the most part, Windows comes out on top. And as a general rule of thumb, if your peak commit charge is higher than your total RAM after your normal usage of the computer, you need more RAM. Now... to get back on topic. If you've tried reinstalling, I'd also say that it's possible that your installation CD has corrupt files. You might want to contact Microsoft to see if you can get a replacement CD sent to you. Going beyond that would be somewhat excessive troubleshooting at this point.

Sure the download is a bit bigger, but Kerio takes up twice as much RAM as Sygate, and its more "in your face". I'd rather download a 130MB program to use 2MB of RAM than a 4MB download that uses 20MB of RAM.
