  1. VMware is a virtual PC and Google is your friend.Yes... but sometimes you can't really get a feel for what VMware is, even from the VMware website. VMware creates a virtual computer within the application. In this virtual PC you can do just about anything that you could with a regular PC. I have a VM set up with a base Windows install, just for the purpose of testing out software.
  2. The base Miranda is pretty stable. It's all the plugins that cause it to crash a lot... You can just use the A-patch to remove all the crap from MSN. Gaim is a pretty good alternative. Not really meant for Windows, but it works. Trillian is another possibility, but the fact that it doesn't use standard Windows just p***es me off...
  3. SSL Port - 465
  4. Are you talking about the security certificate that get asked about when I go to view the webmail on the site? (http://www.phas.ubc.ca/ -> WebMail) I've done that and I don't get a warning in IE anymore, but Outlook still complains.

  6. I'm somewhat like you, in that my DVDs never leave my house. If ever I'm going to a friend's place to watch a movie, I'll bring a copy. I've never had problems with DVDShrink not reading any of my DVDs. My suggestion in general is that if it works, use it. When the day comes that you can't backup a DVD, then start looking for alternatives.
  7. Like the title says, I'm having problems with this. When I try to send the message, I get an error: I don't think this is a problem with IPB 2.1.3 per se, so I made a separate thread.

    XPize 4.1 MCE

Thanks XPero!!!! Great work as always!!! Hehe... this is one of the things that's always on my UACDs now...
  9. To quote... Holy moth....
  10. What's wrong with DVDShrink? It may not be in production, but that doesn't mean that its no good.
  11. uTorrent is a bitTorrent client, so anything that you can find on BT you can use uTorrent with. It's known for its very low CPU and memory usage. I have NEVER noticed it running on my computers - something that I can't say for BitComet or Azureus. It can start with Windows, and can be minimized to the system tray. There is no remote administration of uTorrent, but you could always just use Remote Desktop or UltraVNC for that.
  12. Well, you can help prevent him from getting viruses by teaching him safe and proper internet usage. The basics: - No "shady" websites (warez, cracks, pr0n, free deals, etc) - No Kazaa!!!!! - Don't open unknown e-mail attachments Other than that, NOD32 with BlackSpear's additional settings over at the Wilders Security Forums. If you really want to prevent him from getting viruses, give him Linux...
  13. It can decompress them. I still suggest WinRAR because the GUI is a lot easier to use IMO. There are certain parts to 7-zip that I just don't like the feel of. In the end, to each their own.
  14. So apply them then...
  15. It is strange. I have no idea why that is. I think he was actually talking about Sharaza bugging him all the time with notifications and pop-ups and the "media box".

    XPize v4.1 MCE?

I don't think people would actually use XPize if it continuously caused their computer to crash. As for your problem, have you investigated as to why that is? Could it be one of the two files that are listed there? (simply replace them with the originals to fix)
  17. WinRAR has the best overall feature set IMO. 7-zip will give you better compression ratios, but that's only if you're really nitpicky about file sizes.
  18. uTorrent. All that needs to be said.

    XPize v4.1 MCE?

@Dutchdre - Thanks for the update. @azaghal - Read that line again carefully. Key word - may. I've been running XPize on my computer without any problems whatsoever. No explorer crashes, no strange bugs.People put it on their computer because it looks a lot better than the default, while not taking up any more resources. @Ðrзω™ - Love the avatar!!! lmfao... EDIT - Firefox 1.07 works fine here. Dunno what's up with that...
  20. I just thought I'd share a great find that I've been using and testing for the past couple of weeks. Notebook Hardware Control - Homepage Everyone has probably heard of people overclocking and having to increase voltages to keep things stable, but for laptops, you want to lower the voltage to reduce power consumption. I've got a Banias core Pentium-M 1.4GHz. By default, the system will step down the voltage along with the multiplier when there is no load on the processor. After using NHC for a while and testing with Prime95 and CPUBurn, I found that I could push the voltages down to these levels and still keep things stable (default voltages in brackets) 14x - 1.100V (1.484V) 12x - 1.036V (1.436V) 10x - 0.956V (1.308V) 8x - 0.860V (1.180V) 6x - 0.844V (0.956V) Another really great advantage to this (overclockers will know this as well) is that the lower voltages mean less heat is generated. With the top multiplier at 1.1V, if I'm doing intensive CPU work (7-zipping for example) and my laptop is on its stand (Link), the fan doesn't come on! When my laptop is sitting on the flat desk, it takes a lot longer for the fan to kick in. Quite simply put, it puts you in control of your CPU. Another few features: - Battery monitoring - S.M.A.R.T. Hard disk monitoring and control - CPU Temperature monitoring and Fan control. - ATI Clock Control (over/underclock your graphics card to increase performance or save on battery life) I could go on for quite a while describing all the advantages of this, but you should really just try it for yourself. It needs .NET Framework 2.0 Final installed, but it's not really that big of a deal. Best of all, for home use - IT'S FREE!!!
  21. You shouldn't use a CD that you didn't create. That would be illegal. If you have a CD of your own and someone set up the UA and nLite for you, then I'd suggest learning how to use the resources here yourself. My suggestion - Use the integrator by Signet to integrate RyanVM's hotfix pack. After that, use nLite to strip out whatever components you need. Don't ask which ones are safe to remove, because that question has been asked before, and the answer is - It's up to you to find that out. It's a lot of trial and error. You'll need a full install CD first before doing any of this.
  22. You seem to be in a bad mood today... And for Google Maps, do you now want Google to record all the street names of every city in the world? That's a pretty tall order. Oh and making a great search engine like Google grants them each a few billion IMO. 99% of the people who use the internet use Google. It's Capitalism 101 - plain and simple. GMail (Google Mail) works too. It's officially still in "beta", but it's better than any other online e-mail system I've ever used. Clean simple interface, no big fancy graphics, and all the features you'd ever need from e-mail. They use their "great search engine" to help you find your e-mails more easily. If I had that kind of searching power in Outlook... boy would that be great. Google Adsense works as well. Ever noticed how many sites (including this one) keep themselves running by using Google Ads?

    XPize v4.1 MCE?

Uh oh... I'll test this out as well... I don't use Firefox primarily, but it's a good backup. Can someone else verify the MD5 sum on the download page? I get something different (73ca4be16e674899b4f37122c7a64121). It looks like XPero copied the MD5 sum from the previous version.
  24. Make sure that the computer is not set to automatically restart in the event of an error. How-to Does a blue screen come up in this case? What does it say?
  25. Listen to Digitally Imported - Vocal Trance and you'll probably find what I like. It's nice to program to. There's a bit of everything else in my collection as well. Everything but country...
