Jody Thornton replied to i430VX's topic in Web Browsers
Actually those using Firefox ESR 52 would probably benefit more from Roytam's Basilisk build. Same Australis interface and plugins, Just sayin' :) -

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
I went to this page but I was unable to obtain all of the update explanations like the January example above. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/20180612/security-update-deployment-details I know greenhillmaniac posted the right links before, but has something changed? -
I've downloaded but not installed the following updates: KB4284846, KB4230450 (IE10), KB4287903 (Flash), KB4095518 (.NET 4.5) (all part of the 4099638 .NET Package) When I move back to Windows 8, I'll have lots of updates in front of me. What I was doing was: Installing all of the automatic updates until January 2016 Then starting at the most recent updates, and installing backwards. I find that I can skip a bunch of superseded updates that way. Is this a good move? Repeat the process for IE10, Flash, and .NET Feedback desired :)

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
Well I've downloaded (but yet to install) this month's Vista updates from the catalog: KB4230467, KB4234459, KB4130956, KB4093227, KB4294413 KB4095513 (.NET v2 and v3) KB4230450 (IE9) Of course no longer wanting to be a guinea pig, I'll wait a few days until I hear more. Being a pioneer can be fun and all, but I'm beginning to prefer paved roads that I see traffic has already used. :p -
Windows 10 Claimed to Have Overtaken Windows 7
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 7
Yeah I think I am starting to hear about more people using Windows 10 now (anecdotally in my own circles). I find that's the best real-world indicator. -
Glad to have MSFN back up a second time. One of these days I will have to donate, even though I know this wasn't the case of the down time (this time around.)

Group Policy: Windows Server 2016 images and login background
Jody Thornton replied to FranceBB's topic in Windows Server
@greenhillmaniac: Well I'm glad MSFN is back up, because I would have hated to lose track of you. Moreover, the last link you've provided for the logon picture works with Windows 8 correct? That seems nifty. :) -
JodyT to "Jody Thornton" (without quotes). My old username was brought back with the system restore. :)

I can't believe it actually happened. https://www.tenforums.com/windows-10-news/103684-market-share-february-2018-a.html

Just download security only updates from the catalog. Here was the original list of stuff to avoid form the Windows Update list KB3068708 KB3035583 KB2976978 KB3044374 KB3050267 There's more though

Well first off, the you've obviously burned the DVD-ROM from an downloaded ISO. So is it legal? Next thing, Windows Update will just work by searching for updates, so if you just want to download security-only patches after October 2016, I would use either WSUS or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Then you can run Windows Update again afterwards and install the other .NET and IE 11 updates.

I like your thinking greenhillmaniac. And thanks for your feedback dencorso. I'll remain calm

Yikes! Should I be worried about this, or treat it like FUD (which is a mindset I usually don't like to subscribe to) Still awaiting a bios update, but it appears HP is taking its sweet time. since it's an old machine, that may not come to pass.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
I posted this over at Windows 8. Do we know if the latest patches prevent being affected by Spectre and Meltdown? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072698/windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution -
Am I getting this right: that the recent patches for Windows Server 2012 and 2008 do not mitigate the effects of Spectre and Meltdown? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072698/windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution

Can anyone answer how far back the cumulative updates go? So If I update to January 2016, can install the most recent cumulative update, and pretty much cover the last two years?
-
I was just about to install these greenhillmaniac. They look to be the same: IE 10 Cumulative Security Update (KB4056568) Security Only Update (KB4056899) Should I just wait for the ones to come down today? Or should I install both?

every new computer interface SUCKS, sticking with winME
Jody Thornton replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Looked it up Jaclaz. I don't thinks so (regarding Quantum Pixels) If I am using the Generic PnP Monitor (in the absence of a devote driver), am I really missing anything? -

Jody Thornton replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
So I have a Samsung 213T LCD Monitor, which I believe is 21.5" and is the largest 4:3 monitor I've ever used. Is it actually 5:4? I'm not sure. I like a large conventional screen because it allows more vertical real estate (better for scrolling web pages). Not as many sites use the full width, so it works out better for me. I'm set to a 1600x1200 (I think that's UXGA). I like it though. -
Move Location of Windows Defender Data Folders
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 8
Darn! After an update it just resets to the old location and puts new updates there. -

So if one installs Vista fresh, will updates actually work without any patching, or just slowly? -

Well I don't exactly qualify as I'm on Windows 8, but here's a couple of my simple edited visual styles. The first one is a Vista look-alike.
