Now Moonchild last stated limited compatibility with Vista during the Beta cycle. Moonchild never states explicitly that v28 doesn't work.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
Well I'm back to a March 2018 system (minus the the updates for Spectre/Meltdown), and I still have .NET 2x and IE9 updates until August. New Moon's QuickDial page "could" be loading faster, and Windows Mail seems like it might be a bit spiffier. But it's hard to really tell. I wonder if there's a more surefire way to test performance between updates. One thing. uTorrent v2.2.1 seems to close gracefully, whereas recently, I wasn't able to get uTorrent out of RAM complete until I restarted the system. Now it seems to close properly. Hmmmmm! This lends a LOT more credence to @NoelC's findings on Windows 8x slowdowns from recent updates. Makes me wonder if I should uninstall back to January (ensuring December 2017 updates are the last ones) -
Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista

OK so I'm uninstalling all updates back to April 2018 (all the while keeping IE9 and .NET 2.0 patches within that time period). I'll let you know how it goes. :) -
Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista

Now that's concerning. I thought that perhaps (anecdotally) performance felt a tad slower. Perhaps I should try uninstalling the updates after March, just to see. -
Switching between thread pages broke again after server crash

I was unaffected by this on v28. I'm glad I switched. :) -

Seems to be working just fine now. However, is it just me, or has the font shrunk ever so slightly? :) -
POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU
Jody Thornton replied to glnz's topic in Windows XP
Well not necessarily. I have considered setting up my soon to be deprecated Vista machine as an audio editing workstation, and on it I would have installed Windows XP x64 Edition (which ran exceptionally on it). I have all of the updates the @Thrawn hosted on his site, so no need to even connect to the Internet (or even install the Vista/7 x64 version of MSE. And that OS only has extended updates until July 2015. So I suppose you could keep running it. Plus now that @Roytam1 has New Moon available, you have fairly modern browsing available. -
POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU
Jody Thornton replied to glnz's topic in Windows XP
Haaaaaaa! By the way, how long do you guys have with these updates? January 2019? What's next? -
So I've downloaded (but not installed) the Security-Only Update KB4343896, the Flash Update KB4343902, the IE10 Cumulative Update KB4343205, and the .NET Security-Only Update KB4344172. Next month I'll be migrating my data over to my newer HP xw8600 PC with a fresh installation of Windows 8, but I have to admit, upon hearing @NoelC and his observations on post December 2017 updates, I'm concerned about installing them (and by that I mean even non-Spectre and non-Meltdown updates). Also there are indications that my skipping a month of updates (in order to bypass those mitigations) may impair stability. so I have a lot to consider.
-
So @greenhillmaniac what was the consensus on this? What I'd like to find out (without you going to a whole boat load of trouble) is what these patches do. That way I can pick and choose relevant ones for my needs. Any information or links would be appreciates. I can also PM you an email address if that's m,ore appropriate. Cheers!

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
I have installed the following: KB4338380, KB4340937, KB4340939, KB4341832, KB4343674, and KB4344104 For .NET v2.0 I installed the KB4346743 that mike_shupp mentioned, in addition to KB4344176 for this month. IE9 was offered KB4343205, and I installed it. Vista has rebooted and lived to tell about it. So I will partake in September's updates (or it could just be a unified update, we'll have to wait and see). Then I will be leaving you fine folks on my way to a newer machine with Windows 8. -
Oh that's fine (hosting them altogether for easy access). I don't need a list or anything. I was wondering if the legality question of your repository would come up. :(
-
So what if it's hosted on the Windows 8 update repository that Gereenhillmaniac hosts? I just want somewhere I can go through an easy list and decide what I want and don't want to install. :) (This is not me making a demand, by the way. I just wondered if that were possible)

Is it a lot of work, or could you easily just post links for them? I could see a couple of them being useful, but these are only if you experience the issue at hand, right? :)

My Browser Builds (Part 1)

Is anyone in Vista still not getting YouTube videos to play on v28, until they pause and press play again? Any solutions? -

Not at all. I didn't install the new ones (in fact it says they are not intended for my OS). But I've been issue-free, -

Just a heads up that Microsoft reissued and replaced most July 11 updates yesterday, due to functional issues and BSODs. I replaced mine. (I've also posted this in the Windows 8/2012 Section) -

Right @NoelC, but you also installed the March 2018 update which contained the Spectre/Mentldown mitigations, and you disabled the mitigations with a third party tool of some sort. so I wonder if their being present in the system still causes an issue. Whereas, I plan to skip that month's security only update completely, installing only IE, Flash and .NET patches. For Vista, I skipped the mitigations from Server 2008, but I wonder if something is slowing my system, or if it's just an anecdotal impression I get. Hard to say.
-
So here's my question to @NoelC and @dencorso. If DON'T install either the March of April 2018 update (whichever the one is with the Spectre/Meltdown crap in it - and I have that labelled as such at home), and then I DO install all of the other security-only updates to July 2018, do you think that I will reap the performance degradation that NoelC is experiencing? I'm talking about that 8% that's nagging at him. Secondly, remember I was mentioning about updating backwards to minimize Component Store Bloat and redundancy. Well we know that with Windows 8, I have post EOL updates from Server 2012 that I use from after January 2016. My amended path of updating is this, so see if this is rational: Install Windows 8 x64 Pro Start with the newest post-EOL Server 2018 updates (say July 2018). Install each month's update going backwards, going all the way back to February 2016, !!!! AND SKIPPING WHATEVER MONTH HAS THE SPECTRE/MELTDOWN PATCH !!!! Now install all of the remaining valid Windows 8 updates that were originally offered by Microsoft automatically. (pre-EOL) Would that cause any system instability. I know I'll be prompted to skip (or else not be offered) updates that are not valid or superseded.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows Vista
Well my June updates overwrote my patched UX Theme files. So I had to revert to a Classic Theme (until that point, I had various desktop elements overtop of a black screen). Then I re-patched my theme files, and reapplied my Media Center visual styles - Good Times! -
