  1. The OS repair has messed something up or not fixed whatever was wrong. Do a format and clean install, assuming there's no hardware problem.
  2. There're always those (and plenty of) people who want the latest in everything. Before I used XP I was using Windows 3.1, believe you or not. I wrote my doctoral thesis and research paper using 3.1 and Word 6, with 8MB RAM on the computer. Will I get Vista? Maybe, but not next year.
  3. It'd be simpler to load WinPE to do it.
  4. I now see what you mean. I think I've seen this too but can't be sure. If you can actually connect and do your work I'd just ignore it. Otherwise you're going to be bogged down by every little bug that Windows shows up. It's not solving the problem but just learning to live with it.
  5. Thanks for your reminder. No success even with these running. Someone has exactly this problem on MS Newsgroup: http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ne...&sloc=en-us&p=1 My log files also said the same. I've tried extracting the exe, opened and edited the GDR and QFE infs (removing the offending sections). This time it got a bit further with the Setup window displaying to the EULA page then halted with the message: But the service is running. The log files now says "IsInfFileTrusted: ValidateSingleFileSignature Failed:: STR_FAILED_INF_INTEGRITY". The other 7 updates also installed fine, which makes it so strange. [EDIT] I've also tried cleaning the CatRoot folder: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=58062
  6. IE Cum Update KB896688 installed fine on my desktop but just refused to install on my laptop. I've cleaned out all the temp/IE temp files etc. and tried another admin account and in Safe Mode but still failed. I've tried using manually running the exe and Microsoft Update. After the exe is extracted the update window flashed and disappeared and an error box says Setup Failed. With MU it just says Installation failure: Error Code 0x80242008. I tried looking up this code without luck. Any ideas would be appreciated. It's never happened before.
  7. A master image made from a clean install on a machine with generic components, remove all hardware, change HAL to Standard PC, and driver packs, Sysprep and Ghost will in some way meet your needs but by no means will work on all the computers. Someone has written a small util to detect the type of HAL when Mini-Setup runs in the new machines (search for acpi Fudan Lucian, but all the websites are in Chinese). See also MS KB 314082.
  8. Check this reg key (there is a space before the 2nd %): HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cmdfile\shell\open\command (Default) REG_SZ = "%1" %*
  9. Note that the Oct Security Bulletin MS05-048 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS05-048.mspx uses the KB 907245 number: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;907245 for the KB 901017 updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901017/
  10. You're not the only one: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=57310 but I haven't seen this on my DELL laptop. Is it just a delay before it shows connected or a permanent thing?
  11. The winpe.chm front page says it's Version 2004. When I tried to use a Windows Server 2003 CD as the source to build the PE it wouldn't accept it and said it must be XP SP2 CD (which worked fine).
  12. Would using this env var not work? %USERPROFILE% (=X:\Documents and Settings\USERACCOUNTNAMEHERE)
  13. On your side qu, the specific location of temp files depends on the browser and not necessarily in Windows Temp folder. It should be possible to write a cmd to delete these. I have one for IE and Mozilla.
  14. The GUI doesn't display everything on my desktop using 144dpi (a problem seen with some progs). The bottom items: [ ] Custom Pack Name and [ ] Create a Tri-Pack only show the top half. Is there any plan to make it other than a Tri-pack?
  15. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetCache NoConfigCache: DWORD=1 (You'll find this setting in GP).
  16. Something odd happened. I don't remember Ghost having to reboot the OS when it finished installation. Did you see the message on top of the screen for about 3s: Press any key to boot from CD... Do you have a factory PC with its own OEM CD? If so the steps could well be different to repair the system.
  17. Yep, Regshot shows 20 modifications on turning the 2nd display off and 11 on turning it back on (I use 9600XT), all in HKLM\SYSTEM\. Some are duplicates in the registry.
  18. This is an issue I tried to persuade Alanoll to include some comments in the guide. There's more than one way to do it and there's no consensus as to which is the best. What is best for one person is not necessarily so for another. The /integrate method does not compress the replaced files, as far as I gather from previous posts. If you DIY, you have to figure out which hotfixes to include, as some newer hotfixes replace older ones.
  19. Yes your solution is a good idea! After a long search I found it eventually (and since you were so nice about it I would do it): http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=47978&hl= I've given up trying to make it work since I use XP Pro now.
  20. Many thanks indeed Darkshadows and prathapml! I have the older PE so am very much looking forward to the new ver and studying the OPK.
  21. There're some java related files in i386 in SP1 but not SP1a/SP2.
  22. Go to the Recovery Console, type the following 3 commands and follow their instructions: bootcfg /rebuild fixboot fixmbr
  23. How about a custom cmd script that includes copying (xcopying) the address book file, followed by the shutdown -l command. Put this script on the desktop with an icon. Remove the Logoff and Shutdown buttons from the Start menu with regedit (they're GP items) so everyone is forced to click this custom logoff icon. If you want to back up other things, or if your sole purpose is to backup the address book, then you might also consider the schtasks command with ntbackup (which needs to be installed). I've already discussed the steps I took to add gpedit.msc to XP HE here (but it didn't work all the way).
  24. Have a look in your LT's wireless utility program or msconfig.
  25. In XP there is certainly the Net User command available. And in secpol.msc, under: Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network security: Force logoff when logon hours expire Won't this work for a standalone workstation?
