  1. Thanks for the info. I actually have VMWare (the real thing) but it's useful to know this too!
  2. That's for Remote Assistance.
  3. There isn't sufficient info here to know what exactly is going on but as a guess I'd just go back to the Security tab, under Group or user names, add your own account name back to the ACE, with Full control allowed. Or in the Advanced tab > Owner > Change owner to: your name (=retake ownership).
  4. If the BIOS supports booting from USB drive then it should work. I don't know about the older DELLs but the newer ones seem to support network boot.
  5. If it's En Pro US international version you need to add an MUI pack for Spanish. The MUI is not freely avaiable and won't work on other XP versions.
  6. I think you should also be able to change the default port used by regtweak if you want to.
  7. Good to have it. It'd be handy to use it on my laptop. But C won't be suitable so I'll have to make it D.
  8. All I can say is, after changing the ProgramFilesDir from E back to C in regedit (without reboot) the KB 896688 installed immediately and successfully without complaint.
  9. ZA, F-Secure (and I think Norton Firewall) can all block traffic temporarily completely and reversibly from the desktop icon. Before I discover that I just manually unplug the cable from my router. I've used the above as well as Sygate. All are effective. Seagate has some problems in fact while others don't.
  10. Scan again for more spyware and esp. Trojans. Install all Windows security updates. Get a 3rd party firewall if not using one already that will block unauthorised outgoing (and incoming) connections effectively.
  11. Solved (Is the Program Files folder on another drive than the one that the WINDOWS directory was installed to ?....from MS Newsgroup, Mowgreen MVP) http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ne...&sloc=en-us&p=1
  12. I suppose the gel is equally effective (since I use the gel).
  13. Are all the machines similar/identical? What sort of numbers are involved? Simply restoring an image en mass won't do as all the SIDs will be identical. With the OEM, the key has to match the one on the COA sticker.
  14. I just reboot (Autorun is disabled too) when I see this or just ignore it.
  15. I've just done an expt. in VMWare with my existing uA install. I remove the other admin acc leaving only the Admin acc. Then the Local Users and Groups would let me directly create a new account which turns out to be a Limited account. The XP User Account applet still would not let me do it. I think this is by design. This limitation is not due to uA per se. The Local Users and Groups, which can also be accessed from the classic User Account applet (for domain and W2k) and the net user command seem to be the only way.
  16. Try this: lusrmgr.msc > Users > Action > New Users
  17. I don't have a reg file on hand but you can manually set it in services.msc. This is all I can find on MS, apart from Messenger and Alerter the list should be similar for SP2 AFAIK, apart from the extra DCOM Server Process Launcher (Automatic), HTTP SSL and Security Center. Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is renamed Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...t_settings.mspx
  18. No it isn't the right solution for the ntfs.sys problem.
  19. Thanks for the clarification. I tested WMP9 before on a test install and it wouldn't play DVD. So I'm a bit sceptical about WMP 10 being able to play DVD on its own. (I don't mean with a decoder installed: of course it will play DVD then.)
  20. from WinPE.chm: So the syntax is correct: but then according to the chm, the DiskConfig section is only supposed to work in Winbom.ini in WinPE running factory -winpe.
  21. Some people say WMP 10 will play DVD, although I cannot confirm it. Are you sure DELL comes with WMP10?
  22. First see if there's an autorun.inf file in the root of D.
  23. I've never seen any problem on my 3 XP's that use it.
  24. I also have a similar problem on a laptop, never had this before. All the other updates and previous IE Cum updates installed fine. XP is not an nLite install. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=403435 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=403975
