Those shortcuts are actually in the Start menu folders, not tied to the registry.

Some commands in the above list are no longer available in Windows XP: e.g. deltree, fdisk, scandisk, scanreg. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...s/ntcmds_o.mspx New command-line tools in Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...s/ntcmds_o.mspx Also some must be run from cmd. Command-line reference A-Z http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...-us/ntcmds.mspx You actually asked for control panel commands (some with specific switches) and here is a list. I've not found the switches to open the other tabs in SP2 firewall cp applet. cp_commands.txt

Are you really sure you want to restore the registry to the "default" - in which case it's like a fresh install state (or when you've done a repair installation) and most of your settings will disappear and most programs won't work. There're many causes for system slowing down.

how to find ou wich hotfixes are installed?
Takeshi replied to quotee's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
The 2nd vbs returns a syntax error when I try it: Line: 37 Char: 56 Code: 800A03EA As discussed in a previous thread, it's also possible to query the registry for the hotfixes installed. -
1. Disable Simple File Sharing. 2. Then you can go to the Security Tab and add your own account or Group to the ACL. No need to use any other tools. PS. This thread should be in the Windows XP forum.

Using shutdown.exe tool to shutdown remote PC
Takeshi replied to sakulati's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
What command would that be exactly? -
[Tool] VMcleaner, cleaning your virtual memory
Takeshi replied to Nanaki's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Version 01 writes to an ini file and shows the processes nicely. Version 02 shows the PID instead - is it intentional? When this is used in Windows cmd, would it be possible to make it show the info in the same cmd window as an option? Thanks! -
I wasn't aware of the rshx32.dll method. The NoSecurityTab policy key (actually a GP item) should normally apply in XP Pro only and not in XP HE (because it's never present in XP HE in normal mode) and in XP Pro the Security Tab only appears when SFS has been disabled. The reg key to implement "disable SFS" would not work in XP HE. So it seems to be a bit more complicated than it looks.

Wallpaper, Group Policy & Internet Explorer
Takeshi replied to ph03n!x's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
This is just the implementation of the Prevent changing wallpaper GP, which ph03n!x probably had tried when he said he had "disabled their ability to change it". But I note the GP is per user only so it's worth checking the GP again. -
Using shutdown.exe tool to shutdown remote PC

I think the reg tweaks need to be tidied up or clarified before entering to the DB. Do you wish all the tweaks - including the "Unsorted and Untested" to be entered? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=343801 Yes, I mean that page on the merits. Perhaps a brief update to the comments is needed (there were some discussions about the integrate method giving errors, and any significant problems using other methods that might have been raised).

Some tweaks would seem to require clarification to avoid confusion esp. for beginners or anyone blindly trying to apply them. I've not read ALL the reg tweak trhreads on the forum so please bear with me if some points have been discussed before. Disable Alerter and Messenger Service: default in XP SP2 so it's only needed pre-SP2; EnablePrefetcher 3 (boot and program prefetch): this setting is not the quickest option: 2 (boot only) is in my opinion; QoS service tweak is often misinterpreted to speed up broadband: add a comment to this effect. Broadband tweaks may not suit each one's settings and should really be applied after verifying the MTU value; Disable Security Center: the reg entries as such include settings to disable specific prompts: to do the former only requires turning off the service; Modifying the Autocheck Time-out Value - I think this is for NTFS only and only to get rid of auto check disk when it occurs. It should not normally be required. Optimize the Windows Server Service - is it suitable for XP? System Services tweaks: the following all have 00000002 = Automatic, shouldn't all these be 00000004? Disable Routing and Remote Access Service Disable Task Scheduler Service Disable Telephony Service Disable Routing and Remote Access Service Disable Imapi CD-Burning Service Disable SSDP Discovery Service Disable Universal Plug'n'Play Service Disable Background Intelligent Transfer Service (needs to be on for SP2 Windows Auto Updates) LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001 -> for server rather than XP; any benefit in XP? Remove Alexa Spyware (comes built in Windows by default)-> Is it no longer there in SP2? It's usually removed by Spybot Search and Destroy. Configuring the Registry Size Limit - for Win2k only? the reg has no size limit in xp; Disable Windows File Protection - add comment about sfc_os.dll; Make the Windows XP registration with Microsoft unnecessary -> registration is not mandatory; does this stop the registration prompt during setup? Do not use Simple File Sharing => add comment: does not work in XP HE Clear recent documents when you log-off -> if you apply: Disable Recent Documents History or NoInstrumentation tweak, then it shouldn't be necessary; Enable Quick Launch - there is a thread about some difference between SP1 v. SP2 disable unread mail message at welcome screen -> not normally required; to correct a bug only?

I also prefer no frames. I'd have some time after next week if it's not too late and if you give more details what exactly is involved in entering the reg tweaks. If it's only copying the posted tweaks from the sticky threads it seems to be somewhat unnecessary duplication of resources. Coming back to qchain, in the spirit of keeping things simple and avoiding the unnecessary in the process of making an uA, it'd not be inaapropriate just to add a comment that qchain is not needed post-SP2. It's also factually correct. And perhaps a comment on the merits of using different methods - integrate/svcpack/nLite/XPCreate etc. I've not found a way to add page numbers in Acrobat Reader.

A couple of (probably odd) tweak questions
Takeshi replied to Viper187's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
1. TweakUI. 2. http://puppypc.com/windows/rt/comdlg_placebar.htm -
I have XP HE and XP Pro on the same PC. XP Pro has some extra files and a few extra system services. So technically it consumes more resources in terms of HDD. Because you can tweak system services that shouldn't be a problem (services tweaks don't save much RAM anyway). Because my two OSes don't have identical configurations and programs, it's not possible to compare RAM usage directly. But with 512MB RAM both should run fine (consider upgrading more RAM anyway). The resource (whatever this means) question would not be a reason or concern for choosing which OS. Any difference is insignificant.

HotFixes: Using both SVCPACK.INF and /integrate
Takeshi replied to Majoram's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Doing it manually first is a good way to learn the skills and concepts; the tools help to ease the process or rid the tedium of doing it repeatedly. I doubt if it's ever worth including the Malicious Software Removal Tool in an uA. It is updated monthly, only scans the PC once. And if you start off with a clean set of XP source files, what is the risk of having malware in it anyway? -

heloo i wont remove the firewall and automatic upd
Takeshi replied to boshkash's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
If you want to turn off all three notifications, why not disable the Security Center (manually in system services or via regedit) altogether? -
I think the easiest way is to remove/hide HDD2 when you install, assuming you want to install to C.
-
SVCPACK.INF Method (the old method) http://unattended.msfn.org/beginner/hotfix/svcpack.htm As I understand, qchain.exe is no longer required for post SP2 (or even some pre-SP2) hotfixes - please clarify. One suggestion for the printed pdf - would be useful to have page numbers for printing out.

DELL "Reinstallation CD" contains two Product Keys
Takeshi replied to MRWumpus's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
It's similar scenario in my Inspiron 600m (but blue CD - XP Pro). The product key that came with the LT (used in the install - the one in WINNT.SIF) did NOT pass Windows Genuine Advantage verification when I tried to download something from M$ (I think it was the PhotoStory 3). I had to answer some questions in a few window pop-ups and entered the key on the bottom label to get it verified ..... eventually. -
What are these "files and applications located on my computer"? Is the "message that pop ups" from Windows or your anti-virus? It'd help to see a screenshot. I doubt if you changed "My Computer" security settings as this zone is normally not visible.
-
Thanks Marthax, yes I want UK instead of US.
-
This may be the one: IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Security [√] Allow active content to run in files on My Computer Also, if the files have macros, then reset the macros security setting in Word. If the above don't solve it, then it could be some settings in My Computer security zone.

Pardon me for jumping in, but I'm interested and it's related. How to change the Location (at the bottom of the first picture) to anywhere other than US (using En US ver of XP)?
