If you sure it's not a virus can you tell us when this happens, what apps do u use? As I recall there was one virus which copied another svchost.exe process and maked a processor bottleneck...but I can't remember which one...

You could use NOD32 but I'm not sure that NOD won't put some folder on C: drive even if you select D: drive for installation...

System restore restores system state data but if you've installed a game it will left over game installation folder. I would recommend uninstalling game and then runing system restore..

Do u have XP SP2 installed, if you don't, installation of SP2 could fix the problem, if you have than we'll use recovery console..

If the repository folder after a restart is still empty than the repository folder must be corrupted (possibly from an incorrect shutdown), and the recovery file must be unusable before the system attempts to recompile the MOF files (which is a last resort) to restore system data. Have you installed XP SP2? If u have then you should try recovery console. In the repository folder should be one file "$WinMgmt.CFG" and one subfolder "FS" with several files in it..

The files that were deleted are re-created when the computer restarts. NOTE: The Windows Management Instrumentation service starts automatically when you restart the computer.
