  1. I made a completely silent SFX that just extracts TweakUI.exe to System32 and imports the registry key to add a shortcut to the Control Panel. You can extract it with WinRAR if you want. I've uploaded a copy to RapidShare since its only 203kb http://rapidshare.de/files/26982668/tweakui.sfx.exe.html
  2. another vote for R-Studio. Ive used it in similiar situations and had incredible success with it. http://www.r-studio.com/
  3. I bet the people that complain about the integration dont use any desktop search. The people that use IE and WMP probably use WDS as well thats all.
  4. here we go Intel pulls ATI chipset license http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/07/24/in...hipset_license/
  5. Ive heard about this, too early to tell if this would be a good or bad thing.
  6. Nero 6 works fine for DVD's. Maybe v7 adds support for DVD-RAM or DL or something I dont use.
  7. Only tried Google's and deleted it after a few minutes.

I like the popcorn edition with the copy2ram code, its very fast. And there is an update today 5.1.7 final - Standard edition only (22th of July 2006) - other editions will be on Monday - fixed fluxbox startup script - added helvetica R10 font to stop FireFox crashing when rightclick on Flash - modified LC_ALL=C (moved to profile.d/lang.sh) - guest user removed at all, including /home/guest directory - fixed halt (poweroff) procedure - killbill edition: updated WINE, dosbox and qemu
  9. Well for personal use I just use Portable Firefox here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/brow...ortable_firefox But for your environment I would probably modify the program shortcut or profiles.ini to point to a specific profile folder. See these two links: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments
  10. I saw that earlier, thats pretty funny. Bad PR for MS though.
  11. *cough* speaking about vista *cough* There is a new build (5472) that just came out that is supposed to be a significant improvement. http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...ticleId=9001888
  12. @the-matrix The Internet is for porn, wait no The Internet was created by DARPA by the US government for the military to be able to communicate if there was a global nuclear war. I believe it was Al Gore who helped push it into Public Schools and Libraries etc which then became a commercial service through private ISP's. Now that might be an over simplification (www?) but its fairly accurate I believe. However that is way off-topic, back to Vista. [edit] here's a good bit of history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet#Crea...of_the_Internet My primary concerns with Vista is it will ship with a lot of bugs because MS is rushing it out the door. As for the performance problems and bloat well I dislike that but its not as important as getting it to work. Believe it or not other operating systems are very bloated alreadyincluding many Linux distros and OSX. Hopefully nLite will work with Vista.
  13. well I use WinRAR because I am used to making silent SFX files with it. And I like the cascaded context menu. However I usually use 7zip when I just want to compress something or share a file. For best compression I think KGB, but its very intense and slow http://kgbarchiver.sourceforge.net/
  14. well the scary thing about Vista is yes it is currently rubbish, and yes it is beta software, but it is supposed to be in stores in just a few months! I really dont see how Microsoft can fix all of its problems in this short period of time. Also I just dont see any compelling reason to 'upgrade' to vista. OSX looks better everyday. The only hope I have for MS is they're intentionally making these betas crap so people cannot use them for work and have to buy the final product, but I doubt that is true and MS is probably in a lot of trouble.

  16. From what I have researched higher Watts is usually unnecessary unless you have more than 1 video card. For example my Shuttle XPC included a PSU in the barebones kit - SilentX 240 - my system really only uses around 86W normally, if I am gaming around 125W. Power Supply's with higher efficiency waste less electricity and thus produce less heat thus requiring less cooling and thus lower rpm and thus less noise. Seasonic makes very high efficiency PSU's but I dont own one yet so I cannot say much about them. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....anufactory=1697 Heres a good article: Power Supply Fundamentals & Recommendations HOW MUCH POWER IS ENOUGH? http://www.silentpcreview.com/article28-page3.html
  17. try µTorrent http://www.utorrent.com/
  18. my guess is your looking for a way to prevent ares (p2p) from running. i think windows filewall and/or gpedit could do the job.
  19. well i voted for HD DVD. Blueray is just completely over kill; HD DVD is already sufficient for HDTV. HD DVD will be considerably cheaper too. I think the primary advantage the HD DVD has it its discs can be played back in all the DVD players people already own, albeit at only DVD resolution. So all the current DVD being sold could be replaced by HD DVD's and its a win/win unless it significantly affected the price. So I want to know when we can get HD DVD readers for our computers? My main concerns about the HDCP/DRM is the inability to make backups - unless the discs are 99% scratch proof, and the revocation lists. However I've researched this a bit and it sounds like people already have broken HDCP or are prepared too. btw check out this page, has mouseover DVD and HDTV stills from LOTR. http://www.cornbread.org/FOTRCompare/
  20. v1.32 is out, updated top post
  21. well i dont really care much for either myself. the new drm and hdcp is a major turnoff. btw dont forget about the HVD and Paper Disc! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_disc
  22. Here's some new ones rulesPlayer http://www.dsource.org/projects/rulesplayer KMPlayer http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php
  23. SourceCode you have only been a member for a few days and I am going to have to raise your warning level for flaming; if you have any issues about this pm me about it. I consider CoRoNe an expert in this matter and he was only trying to help by clearing the confusion between codecs and filters/splitters. Also I don't see where he said anything that was false or trolling. From what I know I believe none of these players really incorporate 'binary codecs' because of licensing problems aka non-opensource. I think many people just want to over-simplify things by calling filters codecs. If you find another media player that fits this critera please share it with us.
  24. This is confusing, it sounds like MPlayer, VLC, and FFDshow technically have integrated codecs through Libavcodec http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libavcodec Also I believe MPlayer has the ability to transcode certain formats. Just like CoRoNe I do not know of another player at this time that would fit the criteria. As for a list of media players here's a good place to start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players
  25. I think you have created the biggest run on sentence I've seen. That said I just use Portable Gaim 2.0 beta. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/chat/portable_gaim
