  1. K9 Web Protection is what I've been recommending for a while because: 1. It is free 2. It runs as a small system service that will work regardless of the browser one is using. 3. Requires a password to change settings or uninstall (also requires admin rights) 4. You can set it to block uncategorized sites so you dont have to worry about new sites getting through the filter. 5. It queries their backbone for categorization based on the url and then the client compares with your local settings and either blocks or allows; ie you dont need to maintain large block lists. OpenDNS can be set in your Router, but if a network client specifies a different DNS server it will bypass OpenDNS; unless your router has a feature to intercept all DNS traffic. Most people use their ISP's DNS which is contacted through DHCP in their modem. You can go with Router based filters which start to make more sense if you want to manage multiple computers, but this can be more compicated and expensive depending on your requirements. A common example: if you have a certain Linksys router you can flash it with the Tomato firmware to add 'Access Restriction' policies. BTW Vista has built-in Parental Controls but I haven't really given them a full trial. It's always a good idea to run as User and require elevation for Administrator rights.
  2. preach it brother!
  3. I know Everest claims to support Win9x, the freeware Home Edition was discontinued a while back but might be worth trying: Also some additions: SIV (System Information Viewer) (freeware) http://rh-software.com/ HWiNFO32 (freeware) http://www.hwinfo.com/ PC WIZARD (freeware) http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php
  4. SpeedFan (free) http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php Real Temp (free) http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ HWMonitor (tray icons in pro version) http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php Everest (free trial) http://www.lavalys.com/ SIW (free but no tray icons) http://www.gtopala.com/ RMClock (free) http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml Intel Desktop Utilities http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/idu/
  5. We would have known immediately if it was a problem with a plugin if using the '-extoff' cvar allowed the websites to load. Also with a memory dump we would have seen in the stack trace a failure in the ocx module. But kudos for the information and for figuring it out!
  6. Hmm you might be able to use SrvAny with USB Snoopy, USBlyzer, or USBTrace. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890 http://www.wingmanteam.com/usbsnoopy/
  7. I think its failing to see the MBR, which is either because it is missing (didnt copy) or the interface doesn't see the drive. I would normally suspect disc controller drivers if this was RAID or AHCI. Do you get this error if you connect the drive directly to the mainboard, either IDE or SATA? Also try connecting directly to the USB ports on the mainboard and not through headers or hubs. More info: http://blogs.technet.com/asksbs/archive/20...0x0000007b.aspx
  8. its a front end for mplayer, reminds me of MPUI and rulesPlayer I prefer MPC-HC with FFDShow.
  9. Going off topic but... Proof or it never happened It has to do with Areal Density, Platter Size, and NCQ Algorithm, Random Access Times etc. Western Digital's Caviar SE16 640GB hard drive I personally use these http://techreport.com/articles.x/14380 Western Digital's Caviar Black hard drive http://techreport.com/articles.x/15363 Samsung's Spinpoint F1 hard drive http://techreport.com/articles.x/14200 But if you want the fastest single drive you go for Intel! Intel's X25-M solid-state drive http://techreport.com/articles.x/15433
  10. You can use UniExtract to unpack or expand installers and then run the program binary directly. I would run it as a limited user so it cannot change system files, folders, or registry keys (such as shell extensions). http://legroom.net/software/uniextract Also what do you mean by does not support 64 bit? Do you mean that a native x64 build is not available because x86 binaries run perfectly on x64 versions of Windows. I just tried Resource Hacker (ResHack) on Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 without any compatibility shims and it seems to work fine. http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/ Or do you mean the installer complains? Or do you mean the program cannot view/extract/replace the file resources? Another program that hasn't been mentioned is Boilsoft Resource Hunter http://www.boilsoft.com/rchunter.html
  11. np rctaubert let us know what you find
  12. I actually use XnView to view and browse image files. I probably supports every metadata format availible and is updated very frequently. The program is portable and a shell extension is availible: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/pierre.g/xnvie...nloadwin32.html Otherwise maybe look at Picasa 3 Beta: http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=93773 Or Windows Live Photo Gallery: http://download.live.com/photogallery http://blogs.msdn.com/pix/ I didn't realize MS made an enhanced version of WPG which ships with Vista, available for XP too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_Photo_Gallery
  13. Do you know a link with technical specs for the Zunes? Also how does the Zune software compare with WMP other then the Marketplace?
  14. I just watched the demo video on the Replace UAC website and I am somewhat alarmed. It shows two different imitation UAC popups (at 0:50 and 1:10) with Aero disabled to appear like it is coming from the secure desktop, without requesting elevation! As for TweakUAC I think all that app does is set two GPOs shown in the Post #1 screenshot: "Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode" Enabled "Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" Elevate without prompting Also as for "keeps the protection" I am skeptical of the explanation on that page: The screenshot shows a security warning because the installer does not have a Digital Signature; you will get a very similiar warning even with a Digital Signature. Most importantly you dont get that warning at all if it is not an installer, just download a binary, extract it if necessary and run it. Knowing whether or not that unsigned app wants to run in User or Admin mode then becomes very important. I see a few ways that wont protect you: You copy files from an external drive or network folder to your pc. Your web browser is exploited and elevates without your consent to hijack your pc. My biggest gripe with UAC is this bug: http://www.msfn.org/board/Hide-Administrat...ho-t120369.html
  15. I had to RMA my first Samsung 500GB drive due to the same problem. SpinRite could not repair the sectors and they were growing in number every day. Read the FAQ @ StorageReview about the "Clicks of Death" http://www.storagereview.com/php/tiki/tiki...age=DeathClicks I replaced it with a WD 640GB since its about the fastest 7200RPM drive you can buy. I want to go RAID but I'm limited with my current Shuttle box. Also for anyone else reading this and not familiar with Samsung, their RMA process is years behind WD and Seagate. BTW check your power supply, maybe the voltage rails are unstable.
  16. Windows Vista has a new feature called Stacks in Explorer which are like virtual folders based on metadata. If you allow Vista to index you music collection you can stack the files any way you want almost instantly by right clicking in the parent folder and choosing choosing 'Stack By' in the context menu. As for ripping to Ogg Speex I would probably rip to wav using EAC and use the command line encoder 'speexenc'. You could probably integrate that with EAC to make it a one step process too. http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ (free) http://www.speex.org/docs/manual/speex-manual/node6.html (free)
  17. Not sure if this will work, but you view file metadata in Windows Explorer by rightclicking on a file, selecting Properties, and going to the Summary (XP) or Details (Vista) tab. You can also add metadata columns in Explorer when using the Details view. Otherwise I think your going to need 3rd party software, at least a shell extension. Another method is to use an online photo album like Flikr, Photobucket, or Picasa Web Albums.
  18. What OS are you experiencing this on? I tried playing back a few different videos in WMP11 via rightclick on Vista Ultimate x64 and had no problem seeking. I usually associate this problem with trying to playback recorded streaming media, which lacks a frame index so seeking is not possible (I think that idea is correct).
  19. Do you want to run a Apple OS as the Host or Guest (or both) machine? Also what version OS are you refering to? VMware Fusion and Parrells are popular. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_Fusion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallels_Desktop_for_Mac http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines Not really related but OSX Leopard 10.5 now has BootCamp for 'native' dualbooting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp_(software) As for 'emulating' Mac OS first thing I think of is Mac-on-Stick using Mini vMac. http://portableapps.com/apps/operating_systems/mac-on-stick or the OSx86 project aka Hackintosh... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSx86
  20. I having trouble understanding what exactly you are looking for. What about something like 'Remember the Milk'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remember_The_Milk http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ Or revision control software like CVS? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...ontrol_software
  21. foobar2000 has 'folder structure, album, artists, genre, year, artist/album' view options. http://www.foobar2000.org/
  22. Problem is MP3 compression is lossy compression; it resamples the audio and removes less audible frequencies. You should be working with WAV files since they are uncompressed and lossless. Afterwards you may if you wish encode the files again and use a lossy compression like MP3 or a lossless compression like FLAC.
  23. Acronis TrueImage 11 Home Edition Backup Software $9 http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=920758 Acronis TrueImage 2009 is coming out soon btw. You can download Beta 2 now. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-U...mage-Home.shtml

  25. I actually had 2 other computers since the one shown above and my current one Not much change really according to Vista: Yeah I grave dug, should have really posted in the other topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/what-s-your-comp...nce-t81987.html Probably should merge these all and sticky one. http://www.msfn.org/board/Vista-System-Rat...ore-t93850.html
