The personal info microsoft collects and hides
DigeratiPrime replied to smercer's topic in Networks and the Internet
Want to know more about Index.dat? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index.dat desktop.ini is just a simple txt file that gives details about the folder it is in. We could always go crazy and open it in a hex editor just to check though. -
The personal info microsoft collects and hides
DigeratiPrime replied to smercer's topic in Networks and the Internet
information cannot leave the computer if its not connected to the internet. If I setup a Firewall to block ALL outgoing connections, except Firefox for example, it becomes improbable for data leaking. If I use a program like CurrPorts (freeware) I can view what Processes are acessing what Ports (as well as the remote addresses) on the local PC. Finally if I want to wipe a hard drive I would Zero Fill (Low-Level Format) it. -
Area 51 -Spy from Google Maps Satellite
DigeratiPrime replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in General Discussion
There was a Russian Satellite Photo with better resolution of Area 51 that 'leaked' a few years ago. - Area 51 - Groom Lake Closer View: 1831x2256 pixels - Area 51 - Groom Lake Further View: 1941x2429 pixels http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_51The images of the Nevada Test Site, are the 'best' I have seen though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevada_Test_Site -
Should mention that this is Freeware, not commercial spam. Homepage http://tropicdesigns.net/weatherpulse.php Though I'll stick with ForecaseFox.

The personal info microsoft collects and hides
DigeratiPrime replied to smercer's topic in Networks and the Internet
I sincerly doubt MS would ever do anything stupid like original post suggests. I just wanted to point out alternative software. And I did mean OE, so I fixed that. Outlook is groupware that nothing else holds a candle to. -
way to go MS (hotmail via outlook LIVE) wow hmm
DigeratiPrime replied to XtremeMaC's topic in General Discussion
the Outlook Live program is really an experiment by Microsoft to see how it can convert its existing user base over to a subscription model. As long as GMail is schooling them, only ignorant users will 'buy' this. They will probably offer this service on the new xbox (Longhorn/PC version), and i wont be surprised if alot of people make this their "first pc". Im not really happy about that btw, although it is specualtion. -
Actually Im not so sure he doesnt have an 'existing' connection. I've met people who use AOL on top of there Cable or DSL ISP. So in some sense they pay for the same thing twice. Ive seen alot of business and home users do this. AOL does advertise this service as an 'enhancement to you existing broadband connection'. Maybe I am missing something.

DigeratiPrime replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in General Discussion
Well I looked into it a bit. The one area litered with all the craters is the Nevada Test Site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevada_Test_Site The green circles are irrigation systems i think. -

no joke, the terraserver one is an older photo, is black & white, and is more 'edited'. Weird. Im laughing and shaking my head at the same time. -
Someone on LiveJournal came up with this idea, so I dont take any credit. Just thought it was interesting. http://www.livejournal.com/community/the_u...956.html#cutid1 If you Open Google Maps, and switch to Satellite view, you can zoom in over where Area 51 allegedly is, you can see a runway, some craters, and 'green circles' lol Heres a shortcut http://maps.google.com/maps?q=rachel+nevad...11743&t=k&hl=en Craters: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=rachel+nevad...76468&t=k&hl=en

system keeps rebooting @ windows start up screen
DigeratiPrime replied to jasyn's topic in Windows XP
are you using a SATA Hard Drive? You would need to provide the drivers on a floppy in the beggining of setup by pressing F6. I suspect that because you mention it failed while loading scsi drivers (a misnomer during setup). Can you supply more details about your computers hardware or the model? -
Why doesnt MSFN have an IRC channel?
DigeratiPrime replied to degreseven's topic in Site & Forum Issues
I hope we never do, live chat and/or shoutboxes dont seem to attract alot of intelligent discussions imo. It would also take away from the Forums. Some members do have a AIM or MSN button so you can contact them through that if preferred. One can also use email or pm. Usually these 'small questions' can be answered very quickly by just asking Google or Searching the Forums. -
MyDear welcome to MSFN. Can you describe when you recieve the BSOD during Setup?

Ubuntu Linux - try this great distro for FREE!
DigeratiPrime replied to prathapml's topic in General Discussion
dman I am interested in it, it sounds like a very educational and rewarding DIY project. However I feel more comfortable approaching Linux by learning to take it apart first, and perhaps later on compiling it for myself. Right now I want to become more familiar with the applications and different distros. But I'll keep it in mind, and of course others reading this are welcome to try this themselves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_From_Scratch -
