prathapml I had to reread your post, the update was very worthwhile! about my statement of TCO with Linux, I should explain. I am familiar with the Mechanics and Philosophy behind Open Source, I also have used/use several Linux Distros, and various OpenSource Software. Though honeslty I am still a newb with it. A couple issues I have with the Linux Distros is Packages and Drivers. Hardware Support is terrible, XP is easily the Champ of Drivers. Packages have Dependency problems, and some require opening a shell or rebooting to install! Also in my experience the distros seem to run slower than Windows, the desktops (KDE, GNOME) do not respond as fast, and programs take several times longer to start than in Windows. I'am confused about this last point, if the source is open couldnt the distros be optimized to run this software? One of the original issues I had was Fonts, the Internet looks terrible lol. Thankfully one can download the MS fonts freely and easily fix that.

Your news is from 2003. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_Core Also I forget where I saw it, but you can get "Red Hat" for "Free" still, because the source is always availible you can compile it yourself or download a distro that already has. BTW The Title of the thread is ambiguous, I though it referred to the TCO debate. In that arguement I side with the point that Linux is Free if you dont value your time, although i hope that will change soon.

you need to need to take ownership of that folder. read this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;308421&sd=tech -
[edit] it looks like something called Barnix meets what I describe below. More Screenshots. http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slidesho...ease=67&slide=2 Im eagerly awaiting the LiveCD that uses the xpde desktop environment. http://www.xpde.com/index.php

please be aware that Knoppix is not the only "Live CD". ALSO NTFS write support is or was considered experimental, Im not sure how that is standing right now. LinuxDefender is a Knoppix remaster, which includes the free Linux Bitdefender antivirus and has Full NTFS write support you can find this distro as well as others here: The LiveCD List: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php [edit] I saw a link on /. (slashdot) before for a Knoppix that could run in Windows. WinKnoppix

New Spyware Infects Non Ie Browsers Via Java
DigeratiPrime replied to prathapml's topic in Technology News
Why would anyone create fear and uncertainty about Firefox's superiority in these aspects? ITs pure FUD, just like the second article implies. My Summary: Getting spyware etc on Firefox is possible but not probable. Getting spyware etc on Internet Explorer is very very easy. -
Microsoft Office2003 is the best. Its very organized, nice gui, opens fast and uses little ram, and the office online website is great. i am using it along with OpenOffice 2.0 Beta, its getting there...

It has been 7 years since Win98 was released
DigeratiPrime replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
un4given1, I think it would be dishonest to not recognize you own "attack-mode", high sarcasm and display of arrogance right now... Please dont tell us what Linux is, if you have never used it yourself (which is what im betting). Also your description is completely vauge, which Distro are you talking about and what features are you reffering to? Which distros have you experience with? Dont get me wrong, I use XP (mce) I prefer it greatly over win98, I think nLite is simple to use -check some boxes hit make iso done- and can eliminates any issue of bloat or performance drawbacks, but im afraid were polarizing the argument too much. Also I would appreciate it if you would respond to most of my curiosity here, and not just pick a strawman, thanks. -
reboot in safemode, and then run nod32. norton is pretty much worthless in my experience.

m3u is just a playlist file, its not an actual music file. do you have the correct music files in the same folder? Try opening the file in notepad, you'll see what i mean.

good post prathapml, id say thats completely accurate. [e] Just to clarify, you use nLite to build a new and better XPCD. You install it, copy you XP cd contents to some folder, point nlite to it, voila! Burn a new xp cd. The lowest RAM usage I ever had was around 55mb, though I run fancy themes and some 3rd party services so I usually have around 66mb of ram usage. Im personally using XP Media Center Edition which I nlited, I also used Winnt.sif so I could have C:\Windows (1.5GB), D:Program Files(.3GB), and E:Documents & Setttings(.1GB). Again i use MCE, so my XP is a bit more bloated. Still less than 'regular XP' though. [e] and those sizes include my apps i already installed. The most important thing to remove imo is the System Restore and Indexing Service, everything runs faster without those, and I've had less (no) problems. -

nLite is probably the biggest project on MSFN, how could you miss it? -

sorry, buts that last point is almost the same as saying that everyone that uses nlite pirates software. -

Its my first post in this nasty thread, Im curious though. Have the people who use Win98, tried a 'nlited' XP with SP2 slipstreamed? Also have they tried any Linux Distros? Personally I use XP as my main OS, but I am experimenting with several Linux Distros. Namely Xandros, Fedora, SuSE, and Knoppix. I think any of these would be better than win98. btw Some of my reasons for choosing XP over 98 are: easier to network PC's, Hardware Detection, Built for Broadband, Better File Structure, Better User Management, Easier to Deploy (Unattended), Themes & Visual Styles, Office2003, and compatibility with some (other) new software. -
Oh My... IE 7, tabbed Browsing.... WOW

too little too late. -
i use azureus, I often download new linux live distros (I am a Linewb), and average dl rate is about 600/700kbps. You may need to forward your ports on your router. Visit http://www.portforward.com/ for help with this. Your ISP may be 'throttling' certain ports, try different ones. Also if using XP SP2, you may want to get a patched tcpip.sys to allow more simultaneous connections per port. On Cable and DSL since its an asymmetric line you upload and download rate are disproportional, you need to find the optimal balance http://btfaq.com/serve/cache/38.html

Flash 7.0.19 and Shockwave 10.1.0.11 without Yahoo
DigeratiPrime replied to shaz's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
correct me if I am wrong I havent tested this, but I think all that is needed are the 2 Plugins: NPSWF32.dll (Shockwave Flash) and np32dsw.dll (Shockwave for Director). You could put them in a self extracting archive, so you dont need thier installers. Last type about:plugins in Firefox to check if they are installed. -
thanks I'll give this a try on some computers.
