  1. Thank you, but these things don't seem to have helped. Any other ideas?
  2. Hello, I have been testing out my unattended XP cd that i slimmed quite a bit with nLite & I am having some strange problems. I expenced it to be quite a bit faster since i removed several programs/ services, etc. but i was careful not to remove anything important. The first few times i boot up after the installation, windows loads very quickly (1 or 2 passes of the little blue progress bar) but after installing drivers, windows updates, programs, etc. it is much slower than regular installations- like 10-12 passes of the progress bar. Regular windows installations usually take about 4 or 5 passes on this machine. It also seems to have trouble with multitasking... videos lag & jump if i try to browse through explorer at the same time, etc. (These are all things that worked fine before) and I am using the same drivers, etc. that i always have. I am also getting a blue screen when I try to install it on a machine with a SATA RAID0. I know it is a vague question....but can anyone suggest things I should check, or anything i may have removed that could cause problems like this? Thanks a lot
  3. Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to prevent explorer from listing .zip folders in the folder pane when you expand the folder it is in. For example, if i have a folder called "parent" and inside it i have folders "folder1" and " folder2"" and zipped folders called "zip1" and "zip2" my folders pane looks like ... -parent +folder1 +folder2 +zip1 zip2 This gets very annoying in my "downloads" folder because when i expand it the folders pane is several pages long. I would like to display the zipped folders as FILES in the parent folder. How can i do this? thanks a lot
  4. na, its not a balloon popup, i've got those disabled already, its just an icon. It seems to go away after the first few reboots though, so its not a big deal. =)
  5. I have been leaving floppy drives out of my machines for a couple years now =/ This is the first time anyone has ever even suggested that I would need one =P EDIT: Although that is pretty
  6. if all else fails, i suppose I could just make a duplicate directory of the installation source, only without all the files to be transfered, for use with this one installation- since most of it is identical to the first dir anyways, most of the extra room it takes up should get optimized away by cdimage, right?
  7. yeah i tried just sticking SET tagfile=\WIN51 FOR %%i in (c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z) do if exist "%%i:%tagfile%" set CDDRIVE=%%i: in winnt.sif, it didnt work- gave me all kinds of errors about "windows could not find the file 'FOR'" & crap like that.
  8. That makes sense, but I don't understand how you would run the regtweak.cmd file. Since it's on the CD & not the hdd... wouldn't you also need that "set cdrom" line in order to access it in the first place? Could you tell me specifically where to put the files, and what I should use to run them? Right now I am trying to run regtweak.cmd from winnt.sif with [GuiRunOnce] \Tools\regtweak.cmd Does "\" reference the cd root, or the hdd root when run from winnt.sif? thanks
  9. Yeah you didn't understand... I can't use %systemdrive% because I can't use the $OEM$ directory. The $OEM$ dir is full of crap to copy over if i select the option to do the OEMPreinstall. Since I'm using the same install source for the installations that i DO NOT want to copy files over...I can't use that $OEM$ folder or it will copy everythin over. LOL is that any clearer? sorry
  10. Hi, I am making an all in one disk, so several installation options are using the same source- 1 for regular installation, 1 for unattended, 1 for unattended with OEMPreinstall, etc. all using same install source. I would like to apply registry tweaks, as well as run a few other commands like renaming admin account, for all 3 install options, but since I only want the $OEM$ dir to be copied for the third install option, I can't use it RunOnceEx from it for the other options. Does this make sense? sorry if it's unclear. How can I run the reg tweaks from the CD, or what are other options? I know I could just use the [GUIRunOnce] section in winnt.sif, and say "REGEDIT /S D:\regtweaks.reg", but I often use alternate partitioning schemes, and D: is not always the CDrom. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hi all, I just used nlite to remove help & support from my unattended cd, and now every time i boot up this icon that looks like a little blue & white bubble with an "i" in it (info?) comes up in the system tray. it disappears as soon as i move my cursor over it. can anyone tell me how to prevent this annoying little thing from popping up? thanks a lot BTW: I love your site! There is an incredible amount of knowledge here, great work.
  12. Try asking in the unattended section. =P
  13. Does changing the program files dir ever give you problems installing new programs? Like, do they try to create C:\Program Files & then install themselves to it, or something like that? Also, will I have problems since I am putting all these system directories in a subdir? The only time I tested this install (i had several problems) but a lot of weird things happened, like- the All Programs menu would not pop up from the start menu, etc.
  14. I always hate having to type in my cd key when i reinstall windows, so I am trying to make a cd that provides default values, but I only want it to provide the CD key, and I want to be able to change it. I can't get it to show me the CD key screen. The installer goes through the partitioning step, then the next thing I see is a graphical EULA- it's not the normal blue background EULA where you hit F8 to accept. when i click accept it goes on to the regional settings. Is one of my WINNT.SIF options bypassing the cd key screen, or do i need another option? here is my WINNT.SIF... ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition=0 MsDosInitiated="0" UnattendedInstall="Yes" [Unattended] UnattendMode=ProvideDefault OemPreinstall=No TargetPath="\WinXP\WINDOWS" ProgramFilesDir="\WindXP\Program Files" CommonProgramFilesDir="\WinXP\Program Files\Common Files" OemSkipEula=No WaitForReboot="No" [GuiUnattended] EncryptedAdminPassword=NO OEMSkipRegional=0 ProfilesDir="\WinXP\Documents and Settings\" [UserData] ProductKey=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX Another unrelated question- As you can see, I'd like my WINDOWS, Program Files, and Documents and Settings to be placed in another folder so that my C: is not cluttered. So far this seems to cause problems; the Program Files dir is created in C: anyways, and I have trouble installing many programs. Is this easily fixed, or should I just deal with having a cluttered C: ? thanks in advance
