  1. Hi, just to avoid a little misunderstanding: Yes I mentioned to like Lunaris, sounds nice and hints to Moon etc. But Draconis is the exact opposite, couldn't stand to daily use a browser sounding so cruel (draconic/ian), but luckily don't need to anyway ;-)
  2. Have a selfmade ICON draft to offer, already some years old, when playing with a fractal app. Have lots of those, just took a quick look at them now and cropped one. It's not really what I had in mind for "salto" (some whirling arrow / idea "forward into the past"), but it's whirling too and find it just pretty. Not sure if suitable, just as an idea or draft, and of course PD. But can't upload it here. Perhaps anyone else would be so kind and load it into the forum to show up directly? http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=82160630503825452375
  3. safebrowsing: Read previous explanations... VistaLover said: > It is currently only relevant to FirefoxESR 45.9.x & Serpent 55/Moebius forks > and it's still present in (forked) Moebius => In NM/PM not contained at all => do nothing, just forget about it. (Perhaps a mod may split this?)
  4. @3dreal: There's often some offtopic stuff in roytam's topic here, but this prob of yours is getting so very long now, LOTS of posts about a completely different subject, please consider making an own topic for it! And no need to google about safebrowsing, it's all just directly in this very topic already: on this page and the 2 previous ones, you definitely have just read it, so your confusing starts getting slightly weird... What safebrowsing is about, by VistaLover: https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=1175789 And Kitaro's screenshot with the prefs, you even quoted this image yourself just 5 hours ago! https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=1175859 By default safebrowsing is OFF anyway, but just in case, open about:config and in the filter line type "safebrowsing". Check that everything is set to "false".

KM-Goanna very quick. > This evening(1 Gbit/s golden double-shielded cable attached) i took seconds. And in the KM forum recently a visitor from Far East posted he had no access at all. Have started wondering what to make of that, what it may mean exactly...? 2 people had EXTREMELY SLOW download speeds from roytam's site, then solved it somehow. One by disabling safebrowsing. Which had not blocked the file itself, just made downloading unbearably slow. Personally I never had such probs, but my provider is very slow anyway, so doesn't mean anything. But getting the impression there seem to be growing download probs? So, does Mozilla/Google/Whoever perhaps intentionally slow down the site? We've heard before that for example browsers using "XP" in the useragent string (NT 5.x) were refused access to some mainstream sites, or got crippled code or features only. Or does it mean the downloads are so extremely slow with "safebrowsing" due to realtime scanning, of new files they didn't scan before yet? Or whatever...?

Arctic Foxie said: > These forked browsers in-and-of-themselves are "not common knowledge" and "only for the nerdiest". But IMO they should not. Quite the opposite. They are a blessing for humanity, and should benefit as many freedom loving people as possible. The various voices in this forum who strive to keep the userbase of such improved browsers as LOW as any possible, wanting to reserve their use to be just fun TOYS for experts who run them in a virtual retro machine on their (of course) modern main systems, make me wonder sometimes. About the purpose of such goals. Strongly disagree of course. And find it rather unfair to tell all people who don't have great expert skills themselves, who are floating somewhere along the vast spectrum between "geek" and "lemming", to just go and jump off the cliff with the other lemmings, regardless how strongly they fight to escape into the opposite direction (and make me wonder about the goal of keeping the userbase intentionally as tiny as possible.) What a pity :-( Arctic Foxie said: https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=1175805 > "msfntor" - I would kindly suggest that your browsing needs are not the targeted audience for these forked browsers. > What you "need" is Win10 and everything Win10 has to offer. > WinXP "today" really should be considered as "Linux" - a niche audience that is NOT for "everybody". (and various other posts occasionally in this forum, by various people) (Disclaimer: my favorite browser KM needs so many little tweaks for normal use, that in this state it really rather requires users who like fiddling, and a lot of it. So have told one or two times myself to newbies who aren't aware of that yet, that they'd be happier with a mainstream browser. But things are much different with browsers like NewMoon, which are a lot more mainstream suitable, and much easier to use and extend.)
  7. Jody Thornton said: > I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I have a hard time believing that the user base remaining is that low. I believe it's mainly due to fake UserAgent strings. When websites start boycotting certain old systems or browser versions, first with nags and then kicking visitors out completely, when more and more sites are getting hostile, users are just forced to fake their browser strings. And miraculously most websites start working again, fully or almost, without any "support" necessary... Same effect as for Win98 in the past. And a second dilemma, when statistics drop below a certain low level, it becomes an increasing privacy/fingerprinting risk to belong to such a tiny minority.

  9. Oops... thanks for the reminder of the 4GB limit on Fat32! Had completely forgotten about it, since Win98 is not my issue here, completely impossible anyway. But it's still a killer prob for storing the file on a 32GB or smaller microSD card, what I had started considering! So, if downloading the file on perhaps a public wifi spot (no clue yet), to perhaps a huge internal smartphone storage (don't have yet either), it would first have to be unzipped internally, in order to copy the smaller bits to an external SD card with Fat32. Ouf... But guys, I just started realizing: perhaps those "Dump" files are not genuine at all, just copies?? And one already half deleted? (What would one delete? Non-FF addons? Older xpi versions?) Perhaps only the archived, normal website contains the original file? But if so, the big question is, did archive.org really store that link completely?? Otherwise we'd be stuck with the 15GB copy of the "dump", of unknown authenticity. And also wonder: can it be downloaded without that "torrent" stuff, just the simple "tar" link? But the good news is: if that theory is right, no hurry anymore: nothing is going to be deleted NOW, because that text simply refered to the living website - which of course IS already deleted!
  10. legacycollector.org download - how?? Wunderbar98 said: > A 15 GB download probably is not a big issue for most, which can cheaply be stored > on a $10 USB stick, but rather how to distribute and make the files available to others. Sure too, but the very first prob for someone who just wants to store it really is downloading itself. There are large areas worldwide with extremely slow internet, or even no internet at all. And even in better areas, lots of people have provider dataplans with much smaller limits, and very slow speed. Now in a last-minute attempt to somehow get that darn thing downloaded before it's deleted (probably on Dec-31?), finally got crazy ideas: perhaps drive to a big city and try a public wlan or internet cafe? Although never trusted those and zero clue anyhow. Perhaps just buying a supercheap smartphone just for downloading such giant files, in the future too, but do nothing else with that unprotected spy device. But having no clue of "torrent" stuff, and still no download access anway, am already completely confused now to discover 2 packages on wayback: 15GB or 8GB?? This original archived webpage says: https://web.archive.org/web/20191102092539/http://legacycollector.org/ -------------- 2 wayback Hits for creator legacycollector ------------ https://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22legacycollector.org%22 1) https://archive.org/details/Firefox_Legacy_Collector_Dump 22.oct: File collection with a 14GB file and has 1000 views 2) https://archive.org/details/legacycollector.org.tar.xz 23.oct: File collection with only a 8GB file and has 26 views The ??? part: The description on the main page links to something with "xz" (=8GB?) although the main site says "over 15GB of files". So, why are there 2 such different downloads? What's what?
  11. Always great tips and contributions, thanks. Just a pity that I don't manage to check more of them, for lack of time and too busy with other stuff, and slightly more modern browsers. And I can't quite believe this, but could it be that really no one here is aware of the last remaining addon archives?? (yet only a matter of time until those vanish too) 1a) http://legacycollector.org/ 1b) https://web.archive.org/web/20191102092539/http://legacycollector.org/ Just mini-description and xpi-files, no targets and target versions. But easily accessible as webpage, almost all Firefox addons too. Although sadly this archive too got killed by malicious people (as all good things nowadays). So since some weeks that site's now only surviving in wayback archive. And who knows when they'll kill it in there too... (the torrent download you found is a separate thing, this will now get deleted, and I strongly envy everyone who was able to download such a giant but invaluable 15GB file!!) 2) https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/seamonkey/ Still complete, but only the SEAMONKEY and Thunderbird addons escaped Mozilla's axe, for now (but how long??), and the few Firefox addons which were also compatible with Seamonkey. 3) https://github.com/JustOff/ca-archive/releases Sadly THIS list is only available as xpi-addon, requiring a rather modern browser to view, min FF31 or was it 38? The xpi contains a 50MB sqlite database of old AMO pages, but the great advantage is: It includes info about target browsers and their versions, plus old user comments. While the giant 15GB archive with the XPI-files is hosted kindly by the Waterfox guys (who knows how long they'll be able to keep it up, seeing how the great legacycollector guy was already forced to give up)
  12. Am really shocked that obvious trolls and extreme flamers are not banned here. One hero dared to stand up against someone who only joined for posting personal threats and attacks, but only got critized for defending civilized discussions. And then even got slammed into the ground by him with a sledgehammer - but still, who cares, the flamer remains a welcome member. Only the evidence got deleted. What a safe place :-( But of course, just like everywhere else today. People prefer it that way. roytam1 said: > BTW Roy* browsers sounds like I'm narcissism Yeah what I thought. I love it as a fannish name, but an official name is a different matter, and it's not really your style. Unlike someone else, but even for him, wonder what the reactions would be here if that guy had named all his browsers after himself... At the moment like best Lunaris for NewMoon. Tried to find some more possible name-stubs, but no matter what, how shortened or twisted and abbreviated, a quick google search reveals just about everything is long since taken. After that just one stub idea was left as another suggestion: SaltoMoon + SaltoFox Aside from not yet being taken by some company, project or person, I've started liking it too. Had stumbled across that word while looking for stubs ressembling somehow "forward into the past", and find it quite fitting. Jumps looping artistically forward (new prefs and script language etc) and backwards (restore xp compat), and could make for an interesting icon too, something like a whirlwind arrow upward/forward...
  13. Monroe said: > perhaps ''MoonBeam"... Oh... which brings me to "MoonRay" now... somehow like it, and not quite so personal... Of course roytam1 will do what he wants, no one contradicts that. But he has stated that name choices don't really matter to him, therefore nothing wrong with making suggestions.
  14. Hmm... not 100% convinced, but hardly any choice so far (feels like "free" elections in RU or CN ;-)) Would be interesting if someone would volunteer to collect the older suggestions too...
  15. XMoon27, 28.... XFox52... VFox... RoyFox45... 2.... 3.6.... (yeah I know, no rebranding now, just fantasy) LoneCrusader said: > Should Mr. Tobin be allowed to "make his mark" (and a very visible and prominent mark) > on a project he has, in the past, done his level best to destroy? > I don't understand how these issues aren't striking a chord with anyone Certainly am uneasy feeling about THIS too, but RT himself isn't as emotional about such stuff as us mere mortals ;-) As he already stated, if others are willing to do the (boring part of) the work, he doesn't mind adopting it, same as with Mathwiz past commits. And planning to post a poll. IMO that people so readily take the first suggestions is mainly due to a lack of better alternative suggestions. But thinking about, there were already other suggestions in the past... someone should copy them over here... And one prob I see for setting up a poll is the multitude of browsers, getting a bit complicated...
  16. Thanks for splitting off the REBRANDING discussions https://msfn.org/board/topic/180861-on-branding-roytam1s-browsers/
  17. Mathwiz said: > Anyone who finds the suggested "Whistler" branding for NM 28 objectionable, > should let us know now, while there's still time to change it. Seems pretty innocuous to me, > but you never know what might turn folks off unless you ask! Nothing objectionable, but turning off from completely "unknown" browsers without even taking a short look is quite normal. Therefore, to give clueless users at least a tiny hint about origins and intentions, I'd find it helpful to keep stubs like -fox- and -moon- in some way, and add "X" somewhere as hint if the XP-capability is crucial for a build. Of course, not only for completely clueless newbies, but also helpful for the rest of us to easier remember what's what :-)
  18. Rebranding ect.: I've always had a clear opinion myself that different builds and versions should be easily discernible for users. And easily, without needing expert knowledge. Otherwise confusions are intended and will lead to completely unnecessary probs and wasting much time, without any need. Side note: similar prob by the way for K-Meleon. Before the version upgrade to 76.1, all modern Goanna builds declared themselves as "K-Meleon 76", exactly the same as the much older Gecko builds from 2016, which are also "K-Meleon 76". No way for users to tell apart, except at download time, before unzipping and running it (at least the 7z package has a different name, KM-Goanna, but that will quickly be forgotten.) Although our KM main dev had already suggested the logical next version 77 for those much advanced Goanna builds, before vanishing again. But I was rather lonely with that opinion too, and got attacked for it from several fellow KM fans, when daring to mention it 2-3 times. No idea why it's so hard to grasp that such intentional confusions are causing completely unnecessary probs for others and should be avoided, at least if requiring hardly any effort, only insight. Back to here. To me, this current conflict too just demonstrates all over again that almost all extremely one-sided black/white ideologies are just harmful. And again shows that strictly ideological parties aren't ready to move 1mm, no matter how much it harms others - as long as not forced by external circumstances. No chance if not yet harming themselves too much too, strongly enough, beyond their own limit. Luckily, this point and insight seems to finally be reached now - Yay! :D Tobin has done a GREAT step forward, although it's clear it's not a general change of attitude or end of war, but that doesn't matter. It's still a very positive and acceptable step forward (for now), much more as could be expected, with no strings attached (it seems, and hopefully no trojan horse) And finally there's also a real chance to move a bit forward from the other side too, taking the outstretched helpful hand for the benefit of both, and for less expert users too :-) Regardless that fundamental opinions and attitudes never change, but solving single issues independently is still possible and helps all sides!
  19. Howto multiple-profiles, profiles.ini etc: https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/page/22/?tab=comments#comment-1173993 Mathwiz said: > It's a bit belated, but I wanted to say thanks for that tip! It's finally given me a way to > maintain multiple Firefox versions on the same PC, each with its own profile That's great you found it useful yourself, thanks for telling :-) Also for correction that obviously some browsers/versions have a slightly different folder structure, and need to step up 2 levels, not 1. Am a bit limited with testing modern browsers myself due to old (main) machine, so always glad if someone verifies. And yes, if using multiple profiles for different browser versions, it's important to include a hint which is which in newly created profile names. Also remembered only afterwards a yet easier way to get the profilemanager at browser start: by just adding " -P" in the commandline. Only necessary once, since the profilemanager popup offers a checkbox to start itself ALWAYS, and if checking this, no special commandline will be needed anymore. Am suspecting that checkbox does the same as manually editing profiles.ini (1 => 0), but not sure. And guess also different commandline switches needed in some browsers/versions, but at any rate it's great to know that multiple profiles still do work in modern builds! :-) Hmm, then again: wasn't aware that the profilemanager doesn't seem to pop up anymore if there's only 1 single profile? If I read the replies right. Good to know too. Great that in such cases manual editing can still help too.
  20. Thanks for the answers. Would like to extend all this with my own chaotic probs and partly long since forgotten config stuff, but 1) probably hopeless anyway, for lack of sys clue on my part, and 2) you're probably gonna kill me when not firsting studying the 100 older posts about storage-usb-flash-speed-ide-sata-pcmcia-adapter etc. related probs in depth, and instructions on other sites like mdgx etc, which I did try a bit but quickly gave up, since it's all just far too much for my limited memorizing and also I suspect, most info partly outdated by now, and especially quite scaring regarding all those little side-effects warned about, which sound just suicidal, and 3) this topic HERE has sound drivers in the title, so it would drift yet more offtopic, another reason to get killed ;-) The core prob of everything is that as stated everywhere, systems give ZERO WARNING before destroying data when running into some size limit or driver issues! One byte too much and Bang :-(( (e.g.: did you know that nearly all modern SD-cards and other Flash storage start self-destroying after just a few months or even weeks without any USE, incl. those guaranteed 5 years lifetime if USED and overwritten continually?! As far as I am concerned the responsible managers should all go into jail for not printing any retention-time warnings on their products, Grrr)
  21. Sigh, envy you guys for understanding all that complicated stuff and being able to update. Not just LBA, but other important stuff too. Anyway, just a short question: on an unpatched system, would this be safe or risky: A big USB backup disk with several partitions, used by 2 computers, one 98se, the other XP or newer. With win98 only writing in the first partitions (together < 128gb), and using the further partitions only with xp? And if not writing, only reading with 98, would the further partitions be readable at least without risking data loss?

Delighted to see light at the horizon :-)) Am sure new artwork can also easily be added, just created by other members here. Always amazed by the artistic skills of non-pro's in the web since decades. msfntor said: > Two heads are better that one, right? It always helps to bounce ideas. > United we stand, divided we fall, "we're all in the same boat here". > Make hay while the sun shines. LOL! Love especially that brilliant last line, sounds like a proverb, didn't know it yet. Fully agree. I always find it sad that people and groups so often cause each other huge problems, but not caring at all just for ideological reasons. Even when minimal efforts on one side would spare great struggles to the other. Until some day third parties start a war against them all and suddenly they find themselves in the same boot, finally realizing that helping each other will benefit all, and then make great progress by working together. Just so useless that humanity often needs wars to speed up progress, when they could get the same without destructive side-effects. Have read that funnily this conflict-loving behavior extends to animals too, especially wolves, if there are no external threats they start fighting each other inside the own group, but still find it sad. Oh well. But back on topic, just tossing around some names ideas... One prob for users without dev background, it's really confusing when browser forks with minor differences get completely different names each time. There's not even a Wikipedia page "translating" what's what in reality, the basics of those forks, like "Firefox fork to keep killed good features, forked again to still work on XP and keep yet more killed good features" ;-) As a user one is completely left out in the dark, seeing only completely unknown alien names, of completely unknown alien browsers, with no explanations to find easily. For that reason I'd also like very much some common family name or stub for closely related builds, just as a recognizable hint. With that in mind, and the target of "good old" systems, how about.... Moonix26/27/28? Could get used to that one very easily, except "nix" hinting wrongly towards Linux... Or XFox? XMoon? XSnake? XLizard? (current faves) OldieFox? OldieMoon?... Herit-... Vintage-.... Vint... Golden-... Sunset-... Dusk-... Dear-... Blue-... Night-... Nite-... Ripe-... Mozy-... Goa-... RoyFox? RoyMoon?... (but probably too personal, if some day continued by others)
  23. Speaking of Firefox3.6 for Win98 - just in general, have been wondering lately what the requirements are for your 2year old special tweaked Fx36 build? It works okay in my Win98 (with SSE and Kex), and had thought it would also run on Vanilla98. But doesn't seem to start for all users, as read in the win98 topic. Or perhaps it needs SEE? And wondering if anyone might be able to just add TLS1.2 to the old K-Meleon1.6, without further tweaking?
  24. roytam1 said: > general.useragent.compatMode = 2 > general.useragent.compatMode.firefox = true > general.useragent.compatMode.gecko = true @caliber your screenshot shows general.useragent.compatMode.version = 2 general.useragent.compatMode.version => Browser version => Firefox 2 general.useragent.compatMode = 2 => special combined FF+Gecko compat in PM27 PM26 + PM28 (+KMG74, and other?) browsers use: general.useragent.compatMode.firefox = true/false general.useragent.compatMode.gecko = true/false PM27 browsers (incl. KMG76) use: general.useragent.compatMode (INT) 0 = goanna + PM 1 = goanna + gecko + PM 2 = goanna + gecko + PM + Firefox No harm in setting all 3 prefs at once, the browsers will just ignore prefs they don't know
  25. The quickest way I found to edit an xpi (or any other zip file), just not sure if it works with very old 7z-versions too?? HowTo: - Open the xpi or jar or zip etc with 7-zip (not extracting, just opening in 7zFM filemanager) - Open the wanted file by doubleclick (mine opens in N++), or if that doesn't work, by right-click/EDIT - IMPORTANT!! After editing do NOT SAVE, just close the Editor by the X in upper right WINDOW corner (not just 1 tab, but ALL tabs at once) => A popup will ask if the edits shall be saved inside the xpi => Close xpi by Window-X => Another popup will ask if the xpi shall be saved Took me years to figure out why direct editing worked only sometimes but more often not, and still not sure if that's now really the 100% final method ;-)
