  1. Your question is in the wrong section, BTW. This is for Office. Anyways, the answer is NO. You can format different partitions anyway you want. You can have some NTFS and some FAT32. I would use NTFS for all partitions for reasons mentioned above. I keep one FAT partition for my DOS programs. I can boot to DOS and have those DOS commands available.
  2. Everything you're looking for is either at MSFN's unattended site or in MSFN's Windows Tips and Tricks section. About Quick Launch - this requires program links in the Quick Launch folder in the user profile folder. You'll have to copy your *.lnk files to that folder. I had to rummage through these site to find the tweaks I was looking for.
  3. Where does one find the time to install once a week?
  4. I tried something similar to this, but then I discovered MSFN's unattended installs and registry tweaks. I rather use registry tweaks to easily customize the system during an unattended install. I still create an image, however, after my unattended install because it's faster.
  5. Backup your system. Suggest an imaging software like ghost or trueimage. format hard drive (not quick or fast, but full format). restore and see if you have the same problem.
  6. Answers or replies? Lots of posts have many replies but few real answers. It's strange how this is a hot topic.
  7. How does MSFN determine "hot topics"? This is a hot topic?
  8. type set /? in command prompt to list all environment variables.
  9. You guys probably heard that Seagate acquired Maxtor.
  10. That's odd. I've been using Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware version and haven't had a problem. I've never had any spyware problem. I know people hate Norton products but it's worked for me so far.
  11. Yes, of course Ghost can store an image on a partition of the same hard drive. I've been doing it for years.
  12. Your post is in the wrong section. Use forms to allow typable fields. When you protect your document, everything else will be protected.
  13. by tapping, i mean someone using my internet connection.
  14. Right click on My Computer. Click on Manage. Go to Disk Management under Storage. Do you see your 30 GB partition as unpartitioned space? If so, you'll have to use a partition manager to resize your 130 GB partition to include that 30 GB. Otherwise, you can format that 30GB unpartitioned space and Windows will assign a drive letter to it--you'll get a second partition. Anyway, since your OS is already installed, you really can't recover it with windows, you'll have to use third party partition manager like Acronis Disk Director or Norton Partition Magic to resize your partition. These tools are designed to preserve your data. I would still backup before doing it, though.
  15. extract that image to a floppy and see if it boots. maybe it's a bootsector problem.
  16. yup! it's in explorer.exe. i used resource tuner to look at all the dialog boxes and that was among them.
  17. There are a bunch: MagicISO, ISO buster, PowerISO, and my favorite is UltraISO.
  18. you can use winimage to convert from ima to img. don't do imz which is a compressed image format.
  19. It worked for me when I unchecked it from Tools|Options. Try deleting your Normal.dot and start over. Maybe your Normal.dot is corrupted. Also, in View menu, make sure Task Pane is unchecked.
  20. How do you know if someone is tapping into your wireless network that is unsecured?
  21. In my last poll, topic went a little stray with a battle of imaging vs unattended. Here's a new playground where you can offer your opinion on what you prefer. I think both have their place in different scenarios.
  22. @pugwash You didn't specify which ghost version you were using. But here's a tidbit about Ghost 2003 and true image. The virtual memory file is not copied by True Image either. Both Ghost 2003 and True Image omit the pagefile.sys, hibernate.sys so your image is smaller. And that's a good thing. There's no reason to have these, since upon boot, a new file is created on the fly. Your problem is related to something else probably. Ghost 2003 is excellent. Ghost 9 and 10 are different from Ghost 2003. Ghost 9 and 10 are based on PowerQuest's DriveImage software that allowed hot-imaging. I don't particularly like 9 and 10. I like 2003 because it runs from DOS and fits on a floppy. I can easily modify how DOS load from floppy, e.g. add firewire drivers, CD-rom drivers or delete them on the fly in DOS. I think all problems can be avoided with familiarity on how to use the program. Googler-- Just ask Andromeda. He's probably got tons of posts on Ghost 2003. Go to the poll again and find his posts. He gives you explanation why Ghost 2003 is better AND CHEAPER (at < $7.00).
  23. I'm not sure but it seems to be a problem with explorer.exe, since explorer.exe controls the start menu and taskbar. Try replacing your modified explorer.exe with your original (in safe mode or winpe) and see if that solves the problem.
  24. Andromeda can probably write a book on Ghost. You don't work for symantec, do you?
  25. Of course you can get a fresh install from an image. Here's how: Install your OS. Install all of your software. Make an image and you're done. A fresh image. Then you can do whatever and your system can get infected and you can roll back to that image you have that's fresh. It's fresh cause you haven't done anything except install your apps. Restoring from an image is quicker than reinstalling everything.
