  1. I had something similar happen but don't remember exactly how. I think that if you get the popup box (My Assistant)saying you have a new message and view through that, then it doesn't register that you have viewed it but if you do it through My Controls it does reset it. That is if I remember correctly. DL
  2. I would not recomend using gel toothpaste! The abbrasive in it is much coarser than in regular toothpaste. Breathing on a disc deposits halitosis and water (in a small quantity). The amount of water shouldn't do any damage but the halitosis could peel the information layer off. Check first by breathing on wallpaper. If it peels, then use the toothpaste, gel or regular, on your teeth. Then breath on the disk. DL
  3. @albator Very nice. A lot of new apps. One caught my eye and I have downloaded it from two locations. It is called SUPER for converting video formats. I downloaded ver. 1.81 from the home site and 1.79 from a download server. 1.79 is about 1Mb smaller than the one on the home page. Normally I wouldn'b be to bothered with this as people add, modify and upgrage their programs but what concerns me is that when navigating through their website, I get new windows popping up for gambling, finding new 'friends', s3x sites, etc.... Makes me a little wary of the product. Anyone try it yet before I take the plunge? DL EDIT- OK, I should have guessed you have run these apps. Wasn't meaning anything when I asked the question. I ran SUPER. No problems. Does what is says and with a clean, simple interface. I ran this test without changing any of the settings available, I just chose which file and into what format. I don't know anything about media, codecs, convertions. Results of a few convertions= .mov(just a picture really) 320KB conv. to .swf 284KB, didn't notice much of a degradation. .divx 108MB conv. to .wmv 78MB, distinct video degradation. .rm 560KB converted to .swf 4,220KB!, on top of increasing file size by 800%, the video had distinct degradation. .asf 1.4MB converted to .mp4 3.5MB, distinct video degradation. .wmv 1.6MB converted to .mpg 19.7MB, massive increase in file size and distinct video degradation. .avi 10.8MB converted to .mpg 20.3MB, some video degradation Supports - This application wants to stay on top, can not be resized, you need to right click on title bar to minimize, it wants to connect to the internet each time it is run (denied). If I learn more about this and can get better results, it will be a really good tool. DL
  4. You have a column of larger words on the left, maybe balance them with something on the right, bringing the main portion of text to center? You look like an appetizer at a feeding frenzy. jk Looks like you had a lot of fun.
  5. I don't know how many times I have seen a picture or a set that have had a second name put on them and sometimes they don't even bother to erase the first. They just write over the top of it. And how about the number of times you can see a vid or picture with one website's name on it, like it was theirs and on another there won't be anything written on it at all. Cheesy. Just another form of piracy. DL Like this vid that Aaron points to. Here.
  6. Can be downloaded here. DL
  7. @Zxian Nice website. I agree with you about keeping a clean look. I liked the pics of the octopus, stonefish and the guy being circled by the fish. DL
  8. It may be better if they look further up the thread to someone who has said they have invites and pm them with their email address. DL
  9. Hi benrock, Welcome to MSFN. You will want to post your question in the XP part of the forums or a moderator might kick it over there in the mean time. DL

  11. OT:When someone clicks on the Report button, is a dialogue box brought up, a list of mods to select from or....? Or should I just click one and give it a test run? DL

Had not checked this thread in a few days, sorry. @Martijn- The increase in letter size helps. I can and do occasionally increase the font size on some webpages with cntrl-scroll in Firefox due to them using very small fonts ( smaller than yours ). Yes, presbiopia ( kind of means 'sight of the elderly' ) is catching up with me. Something else I thought about on the shade of the text is that being a lighter grey, it seams to indicate less importance to whatever is written. I think that is just a psychological effect, but it is there none the less. @prathapml- I followed your instructions and for all appearances, it only seemed to decrease my monitor's resolution. I can check it on the desktop and it still says I have a resolution of 1280x1024 but all fonts, icons, window bars and buttons are just larger like I have gone to a lower resolution. That being said, the contents of webpages were not affected. All components of a webpage are still exactly as they were before. Odd. I am going to go back and de-sellect cleartype and see what that looks like. Then I'll try cleartype and lower the DPI. If I don't see anything with that, I will just go back to original settings. DL Edit: Ok, went back and set to standard for fonts with 120 DPI and that just made all the letters thinner on their lines and strokes but not smaller ( to be expected with an increase in DPI and maintaining the letter size ) and the overall appearance was still of a lower resolution. Re-set 120 DPI back to 90 and put back Cleartype and that had a nice effect. The letters were definately clearer. Never used that before. Thanks prathapml. In decreasing DPI, my 'resolution' went back to the view I had before and on an odd sidenote, all my files and icons on the desktop reverted to the size they were before but now they are arranged in the same order but in groups with one icon spacing between the groups. I can move them back. Cleartype alone was the winner. Thanks again prathapml.

    Linux comic!

That is funny. A well laid out strip. 98. With OS's, at this point, having fairly easy installs and programs having a decent amount of user friendlyness, virtually anyone can use a computer to one degree or another. The hurdles that people run into are terminology ( this can be a language unto itself and at this point, I am only talking about the superficial stuff: cursor, desktop ( mine or the one on the screen?), task bar, toolbars, left click ( I know it's my index finger but left just sounds wrong for a right hander ), control panel ( why is it a panel and all the others are windows? ), etc. ), different paths or layouts within programs, all of a programs functions and what those functions really do ( this can go back to terminology ), and I know this is the ridiculously simple stuff. Think about the number of people you know, no matter what IQ, that you would be quite happy not seeing them driving a car? Now ask them to install a driver or change the oil. And we haven't even gotten to doing alignments or modding an inf. People think differently and have different knowledge bases. I enjoyed biology in school, so it was fairly easy for me to learn. A classmate asked me to help them with studying for the final exam. They had a D average. She needed a B to pass the class with a C average. Two hours of study the evening before the exam. I showed her the patterns, why things were the way they were, words that would clue you in on what it was. She got her C. No problem. She just wasn't seeing it the way I did. Patterns, terminology, functions. DL
  14. ah, but can u put it back together?? welcome Yes he can, but he cheats and uses jello. Oh, and welcome to MSFN. DL
  15. Uhhh, let's see. If you 'feel' and earthquake, then you must be standing on earth, not floating in water. If you feel an earthquake, then I doubt you would have the time to grab your board, wax it, put your swimming togs on and drive/run to the sea in time to catch the gnarly wave coming in, but then again, maybe it will meet you half way there and then you will have your opportunity to catch the big one! The tsunami someone might want to catch would have it's origins in some other place. How to determine what size the tsunami is going to be and how it is going to behave would be the fun part. Could you imagine paddling out a half mile to catch the wave, feel yourself being towed out to sea another half mile or more, feel the water under you start to change angle and rise and rise and rise, quickly get to a standing position to ride the wave, feel the wave going vertical and spend the next 2-3 seconds plummeting straight down onto sand, rocks, shells, etc...(unless you are in Hawaii and all you have to contend with is some soft coral) only to have the wave smeeeeaaaaar you along the bottom. YeeeHaaaaa, I'm for that! DL

Hi Martijn, I looked at your sight again. Nice. I had commented on some of the text being a little bit to light a grey. It maybe that since I have a resolution of 1280x1024 that the text is smaller and makes it a little harder to read. DL
  17. @gogusrl-There are other threads on this topic and I recall in one of them, someone said that some programs and XP require some swap space or they might not function properly. The explanation was beyond me. I recommend you do a search for them and you will find the answere there. DL

  19. @eleventhcmd - First week or two are the hardest, so you are over the hump. From here on out the hardest thing will be that occasional craving for a smoke. If you can stand up to that, you have it made. Congrats. DL

It just said they went hand in hand. If they are married, he married his aunt, if not, then it is his daughter-in-law. Or his fourth cousin's stepmom's older sister by her fathers second marriage, I think. DL
