Operating system for best performance with 9600 GT
jaclaz replied to myelin's topic in Hardware Hangout
Just in case of need: http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/ via google translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Falkyproject.blogspot.com%2F&sl=ru&tl=en&hl=it&ie=UTF-8 I have NO idea whether it works or if it works somhow "better" than 7, though. jaclaz -
It wasn't intended as an "option", but rather as a "test". Generally speaking (not necessarily Windows 7) NT "setup/install" is VERY PICKY about the hardware, p<rticularly to RAM, and once the system is installed, IN SOME CASES you can re-add the RAM and everything works allright. Even more generally the accent was on the "lesson learned", do not bypass standard troubleshooting, no matter what the Windows Error is. Since you have not many trouble-shooting possible on a laptop (exception made for removing the RAM stick) it could also be a very quick troubleshooting session . You mean should have refused .... I got that 2K and XP were installed OK on that system. Though similar, each different NT system version may well behave differently. jaclaz

Try removing some RAM or "switch it" with some other: http://www.channelprosmb.com/blog/entry/1698/The-ACPI-BIOS-in-this-system-is-not-fully-compliant/ jaclaz

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Strange, I can see the picture allright. If you go to the page: http://media.fakeposters.com/results/2010/11/06/915z2sy162.jpg hxxp://media.fakeposters.com/results/2010/11/06/915z2sy162.jpg you should be able to see it, but nevermind, it was just a fun image in the context of Opera being faster than cooking potatoes.... Here is a better one http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mmBw3uzPnJI/TKnQl8lvKeI/AAAAAAABpXU/bhfYQHADu0s/s1600/funny_demotivational_20.jpg (copy and paste with xx=tt if it is not "clicky") hxxp://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mmBw3uzPnJI/TKnQl8lvKeI/AAAAAAABpXU/bhfYQHADu0s/s1600/funny_demotivational_20.jpg jaclaz -
I typically "fix" several CD/DVD readers/burners a year (just in the restricted circle of friends/acquaintenances) because of the load/eject mechanism has got stuck. It is typical of machines where the CD/DVD drive is rarely used or not used at all for months. Normally all is needed is disassemblng, cleaning from dust and applying a couple drops (no more) of lubricant. In some cases I manually "smooth/round" a bit the "latch" (it depends on models). I wouldn't rate this particular issue as "hardware defect", it is something that anyone with a minimal mechanical skills (and not necessarily any IT ones) can fix with no particular tools in, say, ten minutes. But, yes I have seen many of thse combo CD/DVD's with one of the two lasers not working, usually with other kind of users (kids), most probably they simply "wear out" with intensive use. @Tripredacus I have seen *EVERYTHING* (and I mean EVERYTHING ) happening to electronic devices when thunderstorms passed by. Again I would rate these as "force majeure" or "act of God", rather than hardware defect. jaclaz

Just for the record "0.4.4" makes NO sense. The 0.4.4 (as well as current 0.4.5 "series") is identified by an ADDITIONAL date. Latest of the 0.4.4 series (recommended) is this one: Better if you use a later version (of the 0.4.5 series, from the site cdob gave you) jaclaz
-
Not really. WHICH EXACT version of grub4dos are you using? (depending on the version you might need to check CaSe of the grldr - or GRLDR file) WHY are you using grldr.mbr? (the file to be used as no-emulation bootsector is grldr and NOT grld.mbr). jaclaz

.... and heaps of them saved by replacing the fuse on the keyboard DIN/PS2 connector.... I remember a period when there was a "repair shop" in the city that sold for sixpence "dead motherboards" (something like the equivalent of 2 or 3 US$). On average I would say that 7 out of 10 had been replaced because the keyboard fuse was blown or the BIOS had been zapped by Chernobyl or a variant of it. (and this is enough to describe the technical level of the self proclaimed experts that ran the shop ) jaclaz

In the good ol' times there was a saying to the effect of "whenever you have a problem with a SCSI device, the cause can be among several ones, but it is ALWAYS the cable, and when it is not the cable it is the termination". jaclaz

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
my HDD has the same with this state then i think i did the right fix for it ? so can you please let me know what i should do now?thank you very much. Problem is that you did not detail WHICH of the two fixes you used (both involve a command m0,2,2,,,,,22) YOU did not detail whether you removed the board or you used the paper strip to insulate a set of contacts. Try again from scratch. Read this before a new attempt: http://www.mapleleafmountain.com/seagatebrick.html You may want to try insulating the "other" set of contacts. jaclaz -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
NO. Meaning that you completely failed to read attentively the resources. This model of hard disk may suffer from TWO distinct problems, BOTH talked about in this thread and in the read-me and in the FGA's. (besides a number of other problems that are NOT discussed/solved here). There is a BSY problem and a LBA0 one. Each have different symptoms and to each you need to apply it's specific "fix". "BIOS can't recognize" may mean "BSY". You seemingly applied the fix for LBA0. It's like you have a flu and decide to cure it by putting your left ankle in a plaster cast, it won't help much. (on the other hand this cure may help if you have a broken left ankle ) jaclaz -

...actually it is a FreeBSD.... So it is some deriveative of Unix, but definitely NOT a Linux. @5eraph Sure , just having a bit of fun, but: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/predate http://www.oxymoronlist.com/american-english/ and, obviously : http://www.avolites.com/jokes/queen.htm jaclaz

CMD Batch: Get Time
jaclaz replied to Caml Light's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
As CoffeeFiend hinted, I masked with sarcasm some IMHO good advice, which (the advice I mean, not the joking remark I made) should be taken SERIOUSLY . Now, the following are facts: there is NO "UNcrackable" software protection based on software[1] there is NOT EVEN ANY "UNcrackable" software protection based on hardware[1] having the app checking from a batch (or any plain-text interpreted language) a date on the internet is VERY EASILY crackable having the app sending a "challenge code" (encrypted) to a given site in order to receive an (encrypted) "authentication code" might seem a better idea, but it is NOT (generally speaking) a very good idea[2] [1] It all depends on how valuable is your software and the amount of time and resources one is willing to dedicate to it's cracking. (ANYTHING created by man can be re-created by another man) [2] Say that you have a (temporary) failure (of *any* kind) of your server, guess WHICH software your customers will decide to throw in the dumpbin as soon as they find out that the software they bought isn't working when they need it? Are you prepared to deal with a few tens/hundreds/thousands/zillions angry customers? Of course if you don't care about your customers' satisfaction with your software, go ahead with your "server" approach. There are companies that make money by selling to other developers a protection tool, software, or hardware, or Internet based (which BTW is regularly cracked, sooner or later, at each release), do you really think you can do something better than that? (and with batch files? ) BTW, if you think so, you are wrong , by definition of CATCH22: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22_(logic) If you know how to create a safe protection, you don't ask for help on a forum about it.. If you ask for help on a forum about it you don't know how to create it. MInd you I am not trying to put you down or anything like that , I am simply trying to help you being in contact with reality. jaclaz -
Or more probably a "remnant" from an earlier version.... Problem might be finding a signed bus mouse driver ..... ...this one appears like made in Thailand jaclaz

Watch your hyphens! pre-date <> predate I find nothing funny in a bus mouse. They were a giant leap forward over previous experimental models: (they needed a lot of work to feed them, and to clean the mouse pad ) The really early ones were nice, but d@mn heavy : jaclaz

BUT you can re-enable it with a little proggie: http://www.mp3car.com/winnt-based/38179-fix-ctrl-alt-del-with-minlogon.html @submix8c and this tells you why you may want it: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838653(v=winembedded.5).aspx Another interesting question would be about a non-Commercial user (allowed to use nlite) using a Commercial (and highly priced) XP Embedded. I know very few people that have bought an XP Embedded license for non-Commercial use. (actually noone, I must definitely enlarge the circle of my acquaintenances ) jaclaz

CMD Batch: Get Time
jaclaz replied to Caml Light's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
If your "software" (or it's protection method) is written in batch (or any plain text, interpreted language) a five years old, blind-folded and with BOTH arms tied behind his/her back can crack it faster than you can say "Jack": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_(tree) (or "mango" for that matters), let alone "Jack Robinson": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Robinson_(mythical_person) jaclaz -
Windows Server Backup, help recovering my data!
jaclaz replied to RaynotRoy's topic in Windows Server
83 is the partition ID for a Linux native, typically Ext2/3/4 FS. You will need to save the MBR, compress it in a .zip file and attach it. A suitable app to save the MBR is hdhacker: http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/index.html you want first sector of the PhysicalDrive. jaclaz -
test disk backup boot thing help? hard drive
jaclaz replied to Ashleythetiger's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
You need to post whatever info you remember on your hard disk when it was functional, like (eaxamples): OS used to partition and format it. (or which non-standard tool) OS currently (before the problem) running/booting from it (if any) Partitions/volumes on it (if more than one) OS you are currently running TESTDISK under. Kind of data you have on it, which actual part of them you really *need* (should a partition recovery be not possible) the MORE data you can provide the higher are the probability to solve the issues faster (if possible). Also I don't need/want images, testdisk has a /log feature, use it and post the resulting log. Be prepared to use other tools besides Winimage, detail what OS(s) can you run on the computer you are currently using to attempt the data recovery. jaclaz
