  1. thats more the cpu than the drive... i can do a fresh install, to the desktop w/ mobo, vid, audio drivers dx 9.0c in ~30 minutes (updated drivers not the default ms ones) regardless of if im using a pata wd 1200jb (or bb? cant remember, the 8meg cache one) or a sata maxtor diamondmax 10 300gig (20gig os partition). i know my install time dropped immensely when i went to a64, i don't even use my ghost images anymore, after getting updated drivers in it doesnt make much more difference timewise. granted im not a maxtor fan, but the drive got good reviews here for a non-sata II drive. supposedly all the diamondmax built after april 05 are the same physically as their "enterprise" maxline series. best bet is to read around and see what fits your budget.
  2. not to be a dick rip, but thats a dumb assumption with the info he listed. could be something as simple as no mobo drivers, bios update, etc. granted while it looks like one thing... it could be a number of other different things. need more info. psu specs (12v, 5v, 3.3v amperage for the rails, can be found on the sitcker on the side of the psu) what you are running off that psu (hdd, vid, fans, mem type etc.) mobo bios date for that a8v links for tests (3dmark03/05, etc) showing scores (stock and oc, if applicable) the more info you give, the more we can help. sucks trying to troubleshoot w/o putting hands on. the more info you give us, the better we are at helping you.
  3. so what do you plan on doing with this pc then? if its lots of media stuff i'd recommend an intel (hate to say it), un less your willing to go x2 from amd...
  4. good luck on that one, it beats the heck out of my desktop (a64 4000+, BFG 7800gtx, 1gig mushkin black LVL II pc3500 bh-5) but hopefully its because of the beta status...
  5. any chance of setting a tunnel up between the pix and fw-1?
  6. have you tried an acl like: access-list 100 permit ip 192.168.U.S 255.255.255.0 192.168.D.E 255.255.255.0 I'm having similiar issues w/ a guy from dell in one of my branch offices behind a 506. The other option is to use the established command but that can be a VERY large security risk.
  7. the nice thing about the 3200 is the 10x multi... some people ruinning the 3000 got limited for overall cpu clock because of the lower 9x multi...
  8. Jowood canned the development. weren't happy w/ the results they were seeing from the development team. they still have the rights to the title though, so im hoping that they'll give it to another team to do.
  9. **** kids always taking the easy way out!!! i forgot that cpu-z reads it...
  10. most people are having good luck w/ the venice core 3000+/3200+.. most are hitting 2700mhz on air on a good mobo. my san diego 4000+ oc's all right. its super pi 1m stable at just under 2900mhz, but doesnt like 3d apps at that speed.
  11. another option (although not easy) would be cracking the case and finding out what motherboard its running, then see if you can hunt down any bios updates pertaining to usb issues... its a long shot, but i thought i'd add it.
  12. the thing is.... the ati cards are supposed to launch at the beginning of sept. can ati's ihv's get stock to the stores by then? if they end up doing a paper launch, then that does not bode well for ati after nvidia announced/launched on the same day. prepare to watch their stock drop even more (once ms starts paying for the xbox chips you'll see a nice rebound but those wont hit the earnings sheet till ptrobably Q2 next year). at launch it'll probably be the pci-e cards only. then who knows how long after that till the agp versions start hitting the shelves? my guess would be an additional month minimum. @ xperties: i wasn't planning on going pci-e this soon. bought my 939 and a dfi nf3 w/ agp the last week of june. 7th of july dell posted a deal on the 7800's $491 plus tax in some areas. i was figuring it would kinda be like the 6800 ultra launch, prices sky rocketing etc.. but with better availability. well you can pretty much get a 7800 for ~$500 anywhere now. so i kinda got burned but im still happy. great card.
  13. while definitely a nice upgrade fom a 9800, you might want to hold off on the 6800gt. ati has stated that they will use their bridge chip to convert their next gen highend cards to agp. considering that the pci-e cards were just certified by PCI-SIG, maybe in 2-3 months you'll start seeing high/higher end ati cards in the agp form factor....?
  14. didn't fry any of them, just wanted one that would clock higher than 2400mhz. as for the x2's i was seriously leaning towards that route.. but considering that i was on a 2ghz 1meg L2 chip, and that i'd have to drop $700+ for a x2 4400 that was at 2.2 just wasnt worth the $$ for the 200mhz bump for performance now. my rig gets used 95% for gaming, the rest is just surfing porn . now in a year+ when multithreaded games come out, i'll throw this 4000 in my server and buy a x2 (5400+ 2.8ghz, 1meg L2? ). the only other thing that could push that date closer would be a good size performance jump from nvidias drivers taking advantage of dual core.
  15. the single player demo is out. Pretty heavy for older system but man is it creepy. Its up there w/ system shock 2 and the marine missions from AvP2.
  16. yea, bought my clawhammer 3200 at release (nov 03), now im running a 4000+, REALLY wanted one of the toledo cores, but the 4400 wasnt enough of a bump in speed (imo), and the 4800 was 2x the cost of my 4000+. starting to regret it tho, nvidia is taliking about utilizing the dual cores in there drivers... as for upgrading to often.. the 3200 cost me ~$425 at release, the prior 6-8 months i went thru about 6 2500 bartons plus at least 5 mobos. add that up and the $425 i paid for 18months i used the 3200 look nice and cheap. rip thanks for the info on the turion/mobiles, havent looked at amd for mobiles at all yet...
  17. nah, the air pulled by the psu can handle the hdd/psu from the reviews ive read. psu will pull enough air through to cool the hdd's. plus my current case has a 120 bottom front 120 top rear, both blowing 95 cfm. clean all my fans and heatsinks about once a month, sucks having 3 long hair cats and smoking.... crap gets sticky
  18. thanks lic!!! the wonders of beer... man i should have known that, i have a claw and sd still in hand. i was retarded to start w/ and the beer made it even more apparent.
  19. im a lil drunk so bear w/ me.. but where are you seeing rev4/5? revision e (latest) are 90nm san diego and venice, rev d are the winchesters, etc.
  20. my next case will be the antec p180, sweet case. currently running an inwin q500 from '99 on my desktop. i love large cases, easier to stick 120mm fans in them also for psu, im running the OCZ powerstream 420. plenty of power. im running 2x120mm, dfi nf4, 7800gtx, 1 maxtor 300gig sata, 1 wd 800jb ide, 1cdrom, 1dvd/cdrw w/o any issues. the ps420 is well underated at 420 watts...
  21. well ive been coming here for awhile for info, bugging the peeps on the board for info . but never introduced myself.... im porn and im a geek-oholic... i got into computers about mid '99 cause my car was costing me way too much money. now im looking to get back into cars cause my computer habit has gotten too expensive. any how my skills are very limited.. only been in the IT job field for ~5yrs, and im still low level. jack of all trades, master of none. currently maintaining a network w/: 5 2k3 dc's 2 2k f&p servers email outsourced (looking to move in-house, but doesn't make sense w/ our employee fluctuations) multiple cisco switches/routers/1 vpn conc/cisco VOIP at corporate hq (can you tell we are a ms/cisco house? ) cisco PIX 506e's at the branches support (which is a b***h considering I work for an IT company) currently ~175 employees been here 1yr prior to that i worked for a chem lab, we went from 15 employees to 40 by the time i left. the last thing i did there was trying to go part 11(paper->electronic records). believe me that was a cluster ffff. the fda sucks. so what do you all do?
  22. what exactly are you trying to accomplish by using the "start" command?
