the only place for equivlent cpus that amd was getting their butts handed to them price-wise was in entry level dual core. when first announced the 3800 X2 was going for about $400, while the pent d 820 was going for about $275. now you can pick up a D 820 for around $265-$275, and a 3800 X2 for ~$300. and as for the fx60/ intel 2.8 comparison that was almost laughable thats the thing i am really interested in to0, for am2. the intel switch to ddr2 was very necessary as they were very bandwidth limited. the higher latencies of the original ddr2 didn't hurt them at all. now we'll get to see how the higher latencies will affect amd's new cpu's. the only thing that i can see, in so far, is at least the a64's arent as affected by higher latency compared to how the t-breds were. and for the OP, by your descritption it seems like gaming is going to be very low on the scale. if your doing alot of content creation, you might want to seriously consider a dual core intel chip.

for any one else that runs across this same issue... if you fire up msconfig under xp and look at the boot.ini (which no longer exists). scroll up... and from BCDEDIT.exe...

the qIII smp patches no longer applied i thought aka they pulled them years ago? chronicles of riddick, and farcry have "64bit" patches for them but it doesn't add much. hopefully as software developers, uhmm, develop more multi-threaded apps you'll see improvement. for instance, the nvidia detonator 80.xx's and the ati 5.12's are suppossed to provide gains for multicore users.... how much of gain? at this time i'd say not much as its a relatively recent development....

well i'll chime in here.. i work for an IT consultation firm that will do pretty much anything from help desk to app dev to disaster recovery, blah blah. currently we have 130 salaried employees across 4 states (6 sites). overall size varies on how many consultants we have working for us, but it is less than 200. current internal IT staff? 1. not only that, i get to support our desktops/laptops, but also consultants laptops that i have never touched nor do i know what they are running. thats pretty much my job description.

what he said ^^^^. you can't copy files w/o loosing shares and permissions (unless you have backup software aka veritas, even then im not sure if it copies the same attributes over). robocopy is an awesome tool for file server migrations.

you should be able to restrict usb drives using group policy.

alot of the kiosks are using pre-release versions of the game. as for playing it on a dell 2405, i'd rather play at 720p on a 50" screen.

depends on the game. RvS doesnt require a re-install (just re-enter cd key), niether does q4, steam needs to "re-update" for lack of a better term (i keep my steam directory on another drive), nascar racing 2k3 requires a full re-install (i just cut/paste/rename my current install, re-install, then copy the "old" over the new). other than that its up to you to find out

yea the net code sucked, but it was still awesome . as for fia/gtr, i was a hugh fan of the fia gt mod for f1 2k/2k1, but seeing as i am running xp x64/vista x64 for os's im kinda screwed till starforce (ugh ) comes out w/ a 64 bit version.

anyone play richard burns rally? the game is better than hp2 imo. no helicopter dropping barrels on you. i mean wtf? who the hell thought that one up? last one in the series that i played religously was porsche unleashed. bought all since w/ the exception of U2. how many do i still play since? none.

if you are going to try it the hard way, you'll also want to remove any mobo drivers 1st, then do the reg key to pull anything left...

haven't tried removing that trojan so im no help there... but windows should reactivate just fine if you re-install. the only time it asks for re-activation is when your hardware changes a certain amount of things blah blah blah. when i reach that point (fairly often as i go thru a good amount of gear), when it won't activate i just activate it by phone. ms will ask you a bunch of crap, you just tell them that you changed hardware.

while the mem controller is awesome, it is still app specfic. look up chronicles of riddick improvements vs DIII engined games/large ogl titles. granted we are getting to a point, development-wise, where games on the pc are fubar'd because of development costs. why program for 2million diff configs, when you can do 1 or 2 for consoles?...

not true. if you have 2 fans at say 40cfm, and 1 at 40 cfm expelling air at the rear; you will end up with hot spots or dead areas. your best bet is to have negative pressure aka more exhaust than intakes.

did this drive have c: on the old system? might want to delete the "old" c: partition. regardless, boot from the xp cd to the repair console. once it gets to a prompt use: fixmbr fixboot let me know how that works.

after reading a couple reviews/threads/magic 8 balls, i decided to pick it up. so far sp is meh. will i finish it? probably. once you hit about halfway thru it gets a lot more fun/purty so ive read. the problem is getting to that point. on a side note... considering that you still cant get one.. its hard to tell till it gets in the general publics hands. not only that, Nvidia is releasing its 512mg version on the 7th, and i haven't seen a firm number for mem speeds. "If" it ends up being 1400mhz gddr3, then it'll definitely be close in the high res/AA/AF numbers.the funny part is that ati is doing well in some ogl apps aka q4 d3, even beating nvidia. but the funny part is it still gets its a** handed to it in CoR (ogl).

well i picked it up the day it came ot. definitely atmosphereic. plays alot better than the demo did, but that might be nvidias 81.85's in action. I'm only about 1/3rd thru it but im still loving it. just wish i had more time to play it. also, best way to play is at night, w/ the surround just cranked! definitely raises the hairs on the back of your neck.

hard drives need to be cooled. out of the case, no air flow. as for the diamondmax vs maxline... initially they were designed on the same specs, but some of the mateials on the diamax were oof lessor quality. supposedly any diamax manufactured after 3/05 or 4/05 are pretty much identical o the maxline minus the warrantee. as for what do i use? im pretty hard on hdd's ive got 3 longhair cats, and i am a heavy smoker. ive had quite a few drives die on me. 2 wd, 3 maxtor, 2 deathstars (out of 3 'puters in the same room). i went with the diamondmax 10 300gig sata cause it was dirt cheap (four months ago) i paid like $128us shipped.

there is a way to get it working on th gf4 4x00 series cards, give me a few and ill hunt it down. the only bad part? you cant play online because it sees it as a "cheat" since it gets rid of some of the shaders.
