The "ping" command depends on a DNS server to translate the hostname into an IP address.

Mine takes about... *times it*... 5 WHOLE SECONDS. Then again, I'm running XP under Parallels on my Mac so I can use Office 2003 (the only version I'll touch - I hate 2007), so I guess this doesn't really count.

WELL, like I said, you're paying for the Apple brand too, so that's worth AT LEAST $1.5k! Enough joking around - I've got to admit, though, Apple does make a quality product that usually has fewer kinks out of the box than most computers do (DIY or store-bought).

Yeah, well, like a lot of people have told me, you can get an equally spec'ed machine for less than half what you'd normally pay for an Apple machine. When you buy a Mac, you're essentially paying for the Apple brand and the ability to use Mac OS *legally*.

Mac hardware is WAY expensive when you start adding on extras (RAM, HDs, etc...) which is why I tell people to skip the extras and buy it separately. You can get quality hardware cheaper than buying it straight from Apple. As an example, when I bought my MacBook Pro, the 4GB RAM option was going to cost me an extra ~$750 (yikes!). I bought 2 sticks of OCZ 2GB PC2-5400 for $100 at the time, a savings of ~$650! Anyways, back to your question... I'd plan a trip to an all-inclusive resort somewhere down south!

What have you used to check this? I think that the CPU used in there can slow itself down, but uses Intel's SpeedStep technology for the most part. It could also have to do with the power-settings that you're using (I'm guessing you're running XP on there). It's plugged in right now: Also: http://www.google.ca/search?q=630mhz+eee&a...lient=firefox-a

LOL - They actually shipped an empty box? Did it at least have some packing materials inside of it so that it wouldn't get crushed?

Laptop does not start after logging into a profile
gamehead200 replied to morland's topic in Windows XP
It's called Avast or something. That's odd. Was it an old version? Or maybe the install never completed properly when it was first installed. I've been running Avast on a few of my computers without problems for a while, now. -
Budget DVD burner recommendations
gamehead200 replied to smilejack1's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I have two Pioneers that I bought for about $30 a piece (new) - they are always on sale. No complaints. -
I got one a few months back (Black 4G) and they are pretty cool. The supported resolution on it is 800x480, which is manageable for most applications. Something I was disappointed with is the fact that they are advertised as having 900MHz processors, but are actually underclocked at 630MHz. The supposed SDHC card slots are actually SD card slots which only support *some* SDHC cards (there is a list in the back of the manual). A minor design flaw that I found is that the spacebar is slightly mis-shaped on the left side, but I can live with that. Apart from that, they are fine - no other complaints.

phpmailer (or similar)
gamehead200 replied to M_win's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
The reason you're getting an error is most likely due to the fact that Gmail's SMTP servers require authentication (all I can think of at the moment), something the phpmailer script probably does not support, although I'm not 100% sure on this. Is there a reason you need to use Gmail's servers? Does the company your hosting with have their own SMTP servers? Or if you're hosting it on your own server, does your ISP have SMTP servers that don't require authentication? -
I usually change the URL to something like this and it works:

When you buy a PSU, you must buy twice as much as you need!
gamehead200 replied to Wai_Wai's topic in Hardware Hangout
If it's a rule that all topics about PSU must go to the same thread, then I agree. Otherwise I don't see it appropriate. Read the title: "When you buy a PSU, you must buy twice as much as you need!" It's a discussion of the "double requirement" suggested by an anon. This question is solved, and the answer is BS. The topic can be closed. But this topic has nothing to do with the general questions about PSU I'm asking now. It isn't really related. The subject becomes a misnomer too. If someone is asking those questions for convenience, I would think it's hijacking / off-topic. Comments given. Thanks for listening. Good day. It is not against the rules. However, given how similar your new topic was (also about PSUs), I felt it could be merged with this one. We like to keep things nice and neat. If you have any other comments or concerns about this decision, feel free to PM me or the other mods. Now... Everyone, please keep it clean. -

No they are not, but they are trashed. Trashed topics/post can´t be seen. The first one's not trashed - it's actually broken!

If it is the Guest account that has to be enabled, and if it is anything similar to what I've had to do with XP, then he'll probably have to add and remove the Guest account to "Access this computer from the network" and "Deny access to this computer from the network", respectively, in Group Policy.

PC switches back on by itself after powering off
gamehead200 replied to gui_m's topic in Hardware Hangout
If none of the above work, check the power button itself; it may have a short somewhere and cause the computer to power back on. Although, if this were the case, then your computer would probably be shutting down spontaneously as well, so I'm not 100% sure. Like a few other people have already mentioned, swap out the PSU and see what happens. -
