  1. You really need to look at this page on Unattended CD/DVD Guide, specifically the 'cleanup.cmd' section.SP
  2. Update: Tried again from the root dir, and everything works great apart from the Windows Installer 3.1 Redstributable. Every time i try to install this, even as the only item checked, it gives me a .NET crash with 'Illegal characters in path' error. SP
  3. Hi jcarle, Downloaded and run, works as it says on the box I had however a .net error, which crashed the proggie, see attached picture : Seems to be telling me that the path is too long. I did try this from my desktop, so yes it is very possible that path combined with the length MS uses for their filenames is the problem. I'll try again from a root dir just to be sure. Will the program automatically ignore downloads that have already, er, downloaded, or do we have to untick the ones we have? Everything else seemed to download quickly, think this was the last file. Edit: forgot to add, using the latest .Net 2.0 runtimes. Let you know how it goes. Otherwise, this is a great painless way to set up a hotfix cd I can carry around for pc's that dont have internet access. Thanks! SP
  4. GnuPG is for plenty of OS's, including XP The basic download is commandline tools, but i also use the ' GPGee' GUI Here which gives you a right-click integration in explorer to excode or sign any files. PGP / GPG is pretty much the defacto standard, and is not too difficult to setup if you have a basic understanding of the public/private key system. I can help you configure it if you want to give it a try. Edit: PicoCrypt would also do what you want, as DigeratiPrime says, and is probably a bit simpler, but the encryption is less secure. Depends if you want to hide your data from basic attacks, or from the FBI ;P SP
  5. I took a look at the demo ver (if that is the one you are talking about?). It's Installshield ver 11 using installscript and no msi. That being the case, it should work with the '/r' switch to record the installation and '/s' to playback that silently. Full ver will probably be similar. Search around for methods to silent install installshield files. SP
  6. And a second vote for truecrypt Used it for ages, and the latest version supports the use of keyfiles (which can be any file on your hard drive) in combination with passwords. If you are just after file or data encryption instead of drive / device, I would always recommend PGP or the GNU version (GnuPG) SP
  7. Ok evilvoice, I've added links to RapidShare for both of them, hope that does the trick SP
  8. Dunno what the deal is with that, cant remember seeing that exact error message before. I'll upload both the Rapidshare and put the links alongside the old ones. Gimme 10 mins or so.Hmmm ... dont suppose you are using IE7 BETA are you? Maybe some of it's protocols are broken. These sorta sites tend to have whacky redirects and coding. Anyone else have any problems downloading? SP
  9. I just checked both the links using FireFox and IE, downloaded no problems, so not sure what the issue is. I'd only guess they are checking redirects, or maybe something in your setup is causing it to fail? Sorry I cant be of more help. If you cant get either of them, I'll upload them both again to rapidshare, keeping the original links too.SP
  10. Did you try the 'hard reset' described on Apples website? That usually fixes mine when it locks : Resetting iPod if it appears frozen or doesn't respond. Try this with the ipod plugged directly into the power socket (not usb / firewire charging) also. SP
  11. Just a custom exe to replace the batch file. It runs the installer silently (with switches) then waits until it's complete before terminating itself. No need for cmdnow etc with this method, and bypasses the problems some people were having with the batch compilers I used to use. So far it is hardcoded for the iTunes installer, but the eventual aim is to have a silent proggie that runs a specified batch file silently, waiting until it completes. SP
  12. Updated to iTunes Version 6.0.2.23, standard and silent installer. Sorry Rikgale, I did the silent one myself this time, cos I want to try out something new ... Links are updated on the first post. SP
  13. i never checked, but i'd guess that the 'hard drive' isn't actual drive with spinning platters, is it? i'd figure it's more like a 'disk on chip'. It's actually a Toshiba 1.8 inch harddrive inside. Check out the following link for a good review and disection info with pictures ...http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/video-ipod.ars/1 Personally, the iPod was one of my best purchases music-related ever. I have used other mp3 players over the years, and the iPod is definately the best of the lot. May just go for a 60Gb video soon. Course, I prolly wont be playing any videos on it, lol! Oh yeah, never seen more than 1-2 sec delay on my 4G model, and that's only the first song after I first switch it on.... SP
  14. No matter, thanks anyway I found a few links on google, but they pointed to this forum and topic anyway, so not too bothered.@all: If you are having problems with installation and running of iTunes, make sure that you always reboot your computer after uninstalling itunes, BEFORE installing again. This is one of the major causes of problems - services will not install properly, and the installer may try to run again. @Dumpy Dooby: Let me know when you can what the iTunes error was and I'll take a look. Regarding the QT-alt error, that is probably unrelated to the iTunes. Never tried to change the file assocs for that myself though. SP
  15. Personally, I tend to discount anything Gibson says by about 99%. He is well known for 'mountains out of molehills', is an incurable attention-whore, and has several times 'discovered' so called major problems in windows. His crusade to try to get microsoft to remove raw sockets from XP is legendary, though his promised 'internet armageddon' has so far failed to materialise. Bottom line, he is first and last a journalist who happens to have computing skills. In the online world it seems people either bless the ground that his shadow falls on, or curse his name and family to the n'th generation. Never really seen anyone with a neutral opinion of him. Many of his tools are, as stated, very simplistic, and often downright dangerous (spinrite has probably destroyed more systems when used by novices than it has saved). His port scanner is very simplistic (though if you believe the hype it's the only thing that is saving the world from 12 year old kids with a port scanner). In fact, there are people out there who believe they are bullet-proof after visiting his site, and in fact they are still vulnerable. He is however a reasonably good asm programmer, I have learned a bit from disecting his tools. Bah, I could go on all day about this, so I'll just say - seach out his name on google and you'll get an idea of his real agenda bottom line - I dont believe there is an intentional backdoor in windows, just shoddy programming. Regarding backdoors in encryption, the current popular encryption methods are well documented and open source, and have been proven over time to contain no backdoors. Remember the original author of PGP was sent to jail by the US govt for his encryption code and principles (his system was stronger than the gvt approved publicly avaliable cyphers) my 2p SP
  16. @posix: Could you tell (or PM if you prefer) me where you found the 6.0.0.18 version you were talking about in the other thread please? That was my released version, and I'm interested to see how far it has spread from here @all: Seems the latest version of iTunes is 6.0.2.23. I'll have a QT-less english-only version up in a few days, other commitments permitting (like jetlag and the desire to sleep 23 hours in a day...) SP
  17. Now sure what the reason is you are talking about - the fact that iTunes needs quicktime? I cant really see the problem with a company using the media playback routines that they developed in one of their own programs. QuickTime is not just a set of codecs remember, its a complete audio and video playback support package also. If that's all that is stopping you getting an iPod, you are missing out on a great piece of kit for no reason. I have both iPod and ipaq, and could not imagine using winCE's clunky interface over the iPod's wheel to play my music, not to mention the difference in storage capacities. Yes, QT is bloated and obtrusive, but the QT-Alt version is much better (and is exactly the same codecs and stuff, just cut down and tweaked).Off topic slightly, I had a grope at the new 60Gb iPod video while passing through duty-free this morning ... drooooool! Screen is bigger, the pod is slightly wider but thinner ... guess I'll be getting myself one of them to replace my 40Gb Color one soon @Sn4k36: You can download a standalone version of the quicktime installer (without itunes) directly from apples site, the link is just not very obvious. Go Here to get it.
  18. You're welcome posix. I guess the topic of this thread is misleading too, since it's up to version 6 now instead of 5. Could a mod change the topic title to something like '[Release] iTunes with no Quicktime' or similar please?SP Plan6M,Sorry, I missed your post until now, not been keeping as good an eye on this topic as I should . Are you still having this problem? Do you have the same problems with the 'official' version? SP
  19. I guess that is a security issue, you dont really want extensions to install without notice, who knows what spyware and other crap that websites would install otherwise. If you are after this to use on an uA CD/DVD however, search the forums for 'Silence of the foxes' which will give you a single silent unattended installer for firefox that has all your extensions automatically installed on first use. SP
  20. Thanks for that Martijn I actually tried a while back to add transparency, but gave up since it never seemed to work (seems because I was using IE at the time, and that has issues with some html I guess). I'll change my avatar forthwith! SP
  21. Or, a little searching would have brought up this topic here on the forum : iTunes without Quicktime. If that is not the latest version, let me know and I'll update it in a few days when I get home from work (topic says ver 5, but has been updated to v6 a few months ago) And yes, you need either quicktime official or alternative to run iTunes, and version 6+ wont install without it either (a problem I am sorta working on to fix when I have the time). Edit: @posix: That was my version of iTunes you found, seems it is spreading further than msfn SP
  22. You can go back to the old hotmail interface. It's in options if i remember correctly - choose 'opt out from beta' or similar. Be aware, after this I imagine you would have to wait for another invite before being able to use the live mail again (you know, once they fix the problems and everyone starts raving about it). It's a beta, that's its purpose. Did you send feedback on the errors?SP
  23. This sort of mod can lead to other problems too - unless you have some sort of time limit or control, one disgruntled user can destroy the reputations of multiple people in minutes, I have seen this on several other forums. Likewise, all it needs is a dummy account to boost your own rep up when it is less than shiny. Cliques end up voting for each other and against those who disagree with them. For my 2cp, and no offence to the original poster, this would be a unneccessary mod and drain on resources, that can lead to tensions and problems. Are we really so insecure that we need the virtual ego boost this would give? Anyway, I got enough negative karma waiting to bite me in the a** in my next life without another way to screw up SP
  24. Hmm. No, cant say I have seen that trend personally. I'm more into the 'Hope you dont regain conciousness before I max out your credit card, you couch-stealing-ba***rd' as I lay down the big stick... But then, my therapist says I have issues SP
