  1. Been using it for a while now, and it is a major improvement to the old hotmail interface (which didnt suck either ). Less graphics to load, a 'preview pane' like outlook, so you can read your mail on the same page as the inbox, and right-clicking brings up email related options menu instead of the default IE one. The whole thing looks cleaner and more like an email client. You can drag and drop emails from inbox to a folder etc, and it includes a calendar (seems to be based on the outlook 'tasks' system). It's still a _lot_ slower that gmail, and the interface is clunkier, but it is better than before, and a few errors and halts appear from time to time. It's still in beta, so give it time. My primary email is gmail though, and I cant see this replacing it. SP.
  2. Ahh, I remember xmplay (or whatever it was called then) when it only played mod / tracker files, way back in the day. It was the absolute best at that time also. Gonna give it a download and try - does the winamp plugin to update your ipod work ok with it? If so, iTunes is getting the boot Unless I am way off in my memory, the original coder of this software was also responsible for the 'PEtite' exe packer (Ian C Luck). He also wrote a few libraries to add audio support for programmers. Personally, at the moment I use VLC for all my audio / video needs, but that may change at least on the audio side now..... Thanks DigeratiPrime for the heads up SP
  3. @Phacues® Like Maverick says, both these progs can be found by a little searching the forums. On another point though, I'd just comment that your sig line is a bit inappropriate for this forum, and prolly violates some posting rules.... SP
  4. From what I understand from reading this on other forums, yes, the patch enables you to connect using the leaked v8 beta, but most of the NEW V8 functionality is still disabled unless your passport account is flagged for v8 access. So, all you are getting with this patch is the new skin - and basically the functionality of a buggy beta-version of 7.5. Why bother? Sometimes it's better to wait than blindly install leaked & patched eye-candy ... SP
  5. And EQ1 > EQ2 I could not get immersed into WOW for the same reason, and EQ2 just doesn't do it for me either - too much a 'dumbed down' version of the original, though I still play occasionally. The result is that a huge number of people who left EQ1 for EQ2 and WOW are back on the original EQ again. In fact, they are putting a few of the EQ features back into EQ2 (buffing outside a group for example to quote one of the major pains) to try and keep people there. Sony merged some of the original EQ servers and as a result the populations are pretty good these days. The graphics in the new expansions are easily the match (scenery wise) to EQ2 or anything else. SP.
  6. EverQuest - still playing after 5 years Occasionally EverQuest II if I can be bothered, but prefer the original. SP.
  7. That scared me, daddy, tell me it will never happen? Actually, in my working environment, we have 40 or so ppl that rely on the internet for all interaction with the outside world. When it goes down it is usually the satellite system (ie the phones etc are down too) and I get dragged out of bed to fix. Imagine a whole ship behaving like that - it's like something out of resident evil. We have also had serious discussions on if it was possible to get dial-up over the marine VHF....... SP
  8. Yeah, I been toying with that idea too, since the only use itunes has on my pc is to update the ipod, I dont need all the other crap. Would like to find out what is causing that error though SP
  9. Sorry for getting in to this late, my new net connection wasn't working when I got home so had to wait until monday morning (yeah, big companies dont need 24 hr support, pah!) Ryan, maybe it is as you say, installing the cut-down v6 over a full version of v5, I have not tried that. The only other thought is permissions - some programs / setups dont like to run from the desktop. I guess by now you have tried uninstalling 5, rebooting, then installing 6? I tried installing this version (it is the original apple msi, simply with bits removed) on a few computers before posting with no probs, several different flavours of v6. Hrm, one other thought - what is the language of your windows? I have never tried my english-only version on a non-english XP installation - maybe there is some transparent code in the installer that will have a fit if it cant find the correct language files? @jondar: I tested the installer at work on an always-on connection, internet over ethernet and it never tried to download the qt installer - however, that may be due to firewall and proxy settings at work. Installing the latest qt-alt and then running my installer worked every time though. SP
  10. Thanks Rik, I've put the link to your silent installer on the main post. Also added 1 mirror on megaupload, for those who have problems using rapidshare. @jeffc4442: As rikgale said, you can usually install a new version of iTunes directly over the top of the previous version. However, if you are installing my modified version over a full standard install, I would uninstall the previous version first, especially if the older version is not the english language version - otherwise you could end up with some localized files remaining of a wrong version. The installer is supposed to remove previous versions, but since I have edited the msi, old files will probably be overlooked. For installing, either use rik's silent version, or run the 'itunesSetup.exe' after extracting the 7z files. SP
  11. With all versions of iTunes you need quicktime, however, you can use the 'Quicktime alternative' which is a smaller footprint and does not take over your computer so much, hence the 'quicktime free' version. One thing for you though - you cannot install itunes using only the msi and msiexec - you must use the installer otherwise most of the drivers etc will not be installed (for ipod, burning etc). You can create a silent installer by passing the relevant (standard msi) parameters to the standard apple installer on the commandline in the format /V"parameters", search for them cos I cant remember off the top of my head. SP
  12. Not drowned yet Amazing lack of damage to our towed gear (ie we used a years worth of luck in a few days), just a few 'tense' moments. I have finally uploaded the latest version (6.0.1.3), link is on the first post as usual. I cracked the problem with qt installer trying to run regardless of the version of QT installed, but you still must first have either a relevant version of QT or QT-Alt installed before installing my iTunes version. Should be home by saturday (was supposed to be home today, until the chopper company decided to pull the plug on us <grumble>) so will try to fix this annoyance then. As usual, please post any bugs found. @rikgale: I was looking at the problem people have with uninstalling this from the silent installer, and the solution is found in the original apple rar sfx: Setup=iTunesSetup.exe Silent=2 Path=.\%windir%\Downloaded Installations\{872653C6-5DDC-488B-B7C2-CF9E4D9335E5} Overwrite=2The above causes the rar sfx to unpack the files to a 'standard' installshield location before running them, thus the uninstall will work. There is a similar ability in 7z, if you use the hacked 7z sfx module. @mjc: Thanks for the offer, but for now I'll continue to use rapidshare and similar for releasing these - however, anyone who wants to post a mirror is very welcome SP.
  13. 6.0.1 is being worked on, not too much changed, except it seems to want to run qt setup regardless if it is a valid version or not.Delay is being caused by gale force 10 out here (50 Knots+ wind) causing us a wee bit of problems, and putting iTunes on a lower priority than ensuring that $15 million worth of fragile in-water gear doesn't get destroyed I'll post it when I have the time. Net connection has also been a bit dodgy for obvious reasons..... SP
  14. Of course! They hacked into my ships server, discovered that I was really busy for the next few days, and decided to release it just to hear me swear! I'll put the 6.0.1 up later today then. SP
  15. @jeffc4442: I think it is a problem with the way that self-extractors work. The installation is extracted to a temp location, then run. After the install completes, the sfx stub deletes the extracted installer. OK, I looked before at the iTunes installers since 5, and they dont seem to cache the install files anywhere. usually the installshield wizard will create a local cache of the installer files so that uninstall / repair will work properly but this does not sem to have been implemented properly in their original intallers. I dont use the silent installers myself, but if you unpack rik's installer using winrar you should be able to use the setup file inside to uninstall iTunes properly, this is how I do it when I modify the installers and test them. There is certainly an option in winrar sfx's to chose an unpack folder, and keep that after installation (this is what the original packed iTunes installers since version 5 have done) so we could implement that. I'll have a look to see the syntax, and if the same similarity exists in 7z (it does in the hacked versions anyway). The cmdow error is because you need to have the cmdow.exe utility in your path, google for it. This utility just hides the cmd prompt during the install, hence the reason you have an error but the install completes. Have you tried the 7z 'non silent' installer, does that help? I have installed / uninstalled those files on several machines during testing with no problems. Get back to you tomorrow, been a long day and i'm dropping off here, lol Edit: for the song speed problem, do you have the latest QT (7.0.3) or QT-alt installed? SP
  16. ALLUSERS=1 just means to install the software for every user on the computer, not just the current user. I used to use a few more switches for the 4.9 version, but not tested on 6 : SILENT_INSTALL=1 - Pretty obvious;P INSTALL_DESKTOP_SHORTCUTS=1 - put a desktop stortcut to iTunes ASSUME_QT_DEFAULTS=0 - Dont use QT as default ASSUME_MEDIA_DEFAULTS=0 - Dont use itunes as default media player. Setting the 1 to 0 or vice versa inverts the meaning. SP
  17. Thanks rikgale, added that to the main post. Getting old? SP
  18. Uploading the 7z to megaupload now, will update this post and the first post when it's complete.@rikgale: I still see your old avatar, even after refreshing. Guess it's the old squid proxy screwing with me again. Edit : Uploaded 7z, see first post for link SP
  19. There is a standalone installer for QT on their download page - link. This has been answered already in the past few days SP
  20. Can anyone recommend an alternative for rapidshare then? Last time I hosted the file it used a months bandwidth in a few days, lolSP
  21. I have uploaded iTunes 6 (QT-less, English only), link is in the first post. Please note the comment about QT version! I'm leaving the version 5 links up also, just until ver 6 is proved stable. SP
  22. Woot! QT-Alt 1.63 is out, containing the latest 7.0.3 QT Codecs OK, I'll upload the iTunes 6 later on tonight. SP
  23. you seem to have a typo in your code : should probably be : REG ADD %KEY%\035 /VE /D "jre505" /f REG ADD %KEY%\040 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\install\jre\jre505.exe" /f SP
  24. I would still, as always, recommend 'Silence of the Foxes', avaliable here. Confirmed to work with the latest 1.0.7 version. It will allow you to add all your extensions, themes, bookmarks, personal touches etc into one silent installer. SP
  25. Update: This may take a while I have a version without QT7, localized for english that sits at about 7.5Mb under 7z. Only problem is that they have been a bit more sneaky with the QT install part, and I'm having a hard time to bypass it. So, if you have QT 7.0.3 installed it will install fine, but any lesser value and you will get an error. I think the logic is buried in the compiled script file, which is a <sweary word> to get at. Since you need the latest QT to use this, is it worth me posting this version? Maybe I'll wait until the QT-alt is updated. @Menedas: I am not 100% sure, but I guess the new iPod will only support the QT range of video files, apple always seems pretty propriety to me. I hope I'm wrong though! Certainly iTunes installs no codecs or support files for any other format, and I bet you will only get QT-compatible files from the iTunes online store. And agreed - the iPod is WAY overdue for an 80Gb version! Maybe I'll have better luck after a snooze SP.
