  1. Hi, I have reformatted my home computer many times throughout the years with no problems. Last night I tried for the first time to reformat my Gateway MX6422 laptop using the disc that came with the computer. Everything went smoothly but when it came time to for windows to ask the usual questions (computer name etc . . .) it only asked for computer name and whether or not I wanted to turn on automatic updates not do i want to have windows connect to the internet and questions like that. Windows then loaded with the only things in the lower right taskbar being windows security and the power supply icon. I have tried reformatting it two times since and I keep getting the same results. I was expecting to see the usual volume, synaptics pointing device, intel extreme graphics, windows messenger, local area connection, wireless network, etc . . . I am was wondering if anyone knows why and more importantly how i can get everything besides the basic windows xp to load correctly. Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  2. I just reformatted my home computer, but something doesn't look right visually. When I open a web browser all the text is the same basic generic font and when I move windows around on my screen it doesn't happen very smoothly. I have installed the driver for my video card and nothing changed. Any ideas?
  3. I was able to connect it to my laptop and run some free demo versions of recovery software. The only things every one found was the files that were newly written nothing that previously there.
  4. Every program I use only gives me the files that are currently on there, not the ones that are lost.
  5. Can anyone please help me. I was reformatting my computer and I have an external hard drive attached and the computer must have thought that it was the D drive and completely erased everything. It made two drives and one of 16 GB and one of 134GB. I wrote a copy of Windows on the 16 GB drive and erased the 134 GB drive and put a few files there. Please tell me there is some way of recovering it. I am not holding out hope, but I can't bare to think that all my files are gone.
  6. What actually happen, and I have no clue how, was the when I went to reformat and reinstall windows xp it did it on my external hard drive. It made two drives and wrote a copy of windows on one 16 GB drive and just erased the rest of the other 134 GB and wrote a few files. Thank for the advice I will try them now.

  8. I don't believe I ever setup a password from Admin. I did try all my usual passwords and even just hit enter hoping that would be the same as blank. I guess there is no way to come up in DOS just short of my error. I tried safe mode DOS, but it came up with the same error. I then loaded a Windows 98 disc just to get to DOS, but it doesn't recognize the C: drive. I was hoping to just copy the missing file to the directory, but I guess I am in a catch 22 with that.
  9. Joe, Here is the latest . . . I chose INSTALL like you said I selected C Drive to create a partition in the unpartitioned space It then says that there is an existing OS on that drive and if I continue all files, subfolders, user accounts, applications, security and desktop settings will be deleted. "My Documents" may also be deleted.
  10. A friend of mine was able to drop off his version, but I get to a screen where it asks me my administrative password. I don't believe I ever set one up the last time I reformatted.
  11. Hi, I was cleaning up my PC, deleting what I thought was unneeded files, while in safe mode. When I rebooted my PC it will not boot up. I get and lsass.exe - system error Object Name not Found. I tried using my Sony System Recovery CD's that came with it, but it wants to delete everything and reformat my PC. I was hoping to just get to the System Recovery file and go back a day or two. Any help, if any is possible, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
  12. I was wondering if someone could please help me with a problem my brother's family was having. They have just switched providers from MSN to Comcast and were looking to transfer their email and address book. I have their username and passwords and have been looking around their MSN email and can't find anything that would allow me to export either the address book or email. I hope I am posting this in the right forum. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  13. My girlfriend has an emachine that has seen better days and she tells me that it did not come with a boot up disk. I don't know if this is true or not. I have a couple of boot up disks for my Sony Vaio. I was wondering if I could possibly use that to reformat her computer or would this completely kill her computer. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  14. I was hoping someone could help me get the Security Center tab back in the Control Panel. I received a virus that removed my system restore files and also apparently removed Security Center and reconfigured my Automatic Updates in System Properties. I am running windows XP. Thank you very much!!
  15. I recently got hit with a form of the about:blank virus. After recovery I noticed that some (at least one) of the tabs for display properties has been deleted. I only have screen saver and settings. I believe there is at least one more that sets background. Also when I right click on a picture, I can not set it as my background, as these feature has now been deleted too. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
