How to get around the 2047 characters CMD string limitation
bphlpt replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
@Phenomic, Sorry for the noob questions, but I don't quite get your example. After you define both r1 and r3, where/how are they used? Are they just used to set strValue? I guess I don't understand how the GetBinaryValue and SetBinaryValue work. Can you give me a pointer to a good tutorial? Cheers and Regards -
Sure. Even if there are things to be changed, at least it will be an example that works for somebody. Cheers and Regards

Was able to fix my Seagate HD, but all data is gone
bphlpt replied to bob7's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
From what I understand, once you formatted the drive, in Vista unlike in XP and prior, you completely wiped the drive. So yes, now you are screwed. If you didn't format, but only partitioned, then there might still be a chance. Cheers and Regards -
Your experiences seem to point in that direction. (I've never used KeyScrambler either.) Hopefully they have a support forum/email that will help you get your issue resolved. Thanks for letting us know your progress. Cheers and Regards

You didn't wait very long to get a response. You are only likely to irritate everyone by posting in multiple places. I don't know about everyone else, but I access the forum using this link - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=active - which shows me every new post no matter where it was posted. You are not getting a response because either no one has had that problem, no one has any idea for a solution, or you have p!ssed everyone off before so now they don't want to help you out of spite [ j/k This is very unlikely, but your second post implies that is what you seem to believe has happened. ] Again, I don'e know about everyone else, but I had not responded because I do not and have never used either Windows Mail or Vista and I have no idea what you are talking about or what to suggest for a solution to whatever your problem is. Have a nice day. Cheers and Regards

Windows Xp installation on an HP 8740w elite book
bphlpt replied to Carl01132's topic in Install Windows from USB
Shouldn't you be able to clear CMOS, and therefor the BIOS password? Cheers and Regards -
FYI, in English Win7 x64, it is called "Enable Suggested Sites". If it is unchecked, they don't appear. Cheers and Regards

I thought that might be the case. And the idea of the poll? Cheers and Regarads

Hmmm. Just playing devil's advocate here, because I personally prefer the cascading style and wouldn't consider using the Vista/Win7 style... You did ask for input on how Classic Shell could be improved. I wonder how many other folks are like Andre and prefer the Vista/Win7 style? I doubt you really know since using Classic Shell with Win7 those people can always just shift-click the start orb and get the start menu style they want, the Win7 style, while still maintaining the other advantages that Classic Shell provides, right? What happens when you shift-click in Win8? (I have declined the opportunity to try Win8, since I'm happy with Win7, among many other reasons, so I don't know.) Anyway, I assume the people who prefer the Vista/Win7 style will choose Tihiy's solution for Win8 over Classic Shell, as I believe Andre does. I've wondered whether the two solutions can be used together and get the best of both worlds? You might also take a poll to see what kind of response you get to the possibility of choosing the Vista/Win7 style start menu as an option. I stress option since I'm sure there are others like me that would quit using Classic Shell if it did not offer the cascading start menu style. Just something to think about. Cheers and Regards

Will there ever be a W7 SP2 or Update Rollup?
bphlpt replied to j3schmidt's topic in The Poll Center
Sorry, but I don't get the point of this "poll". Cheers and Regards -
Please, I mean no offense at all Andre, but you're one of the first people I've known who dislike the cascading menu stlye so much, but I'm sure there are others as well. If Classic Shell had an option to use the Vista/7 startmenu style, would there be anything else that could be changed or added to Classic Shell to further improve it and the way you would use it? Cheers and Regards

Need to mark a few blocks as unusable
bphlpt replied to doveman's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
It looks like you know what you don't want to do, therefor implying you know what you do want to do. And you keep saying you already have most of it backed up. So I guess at this point you want to be on your own. OK, have fun and let us know if you are ever able to recover any of your data so someone else might eventually benefit from the knowledge. Have a nice day. Cheers and Regards -
So did the company you worked for come back to life as well, or did you acquire Uncle Socks when it shut down? And butwhy.com does not seem to exist, so I assume that is an internal domain name? Just curious. Cheers and Regards

Data recovery - do I have any chance?
bphlpt replied to Octopuss's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
The only point that I got out of that post that the OP had not addressed in his previous post to this (#23) was the implied question of the exact size of the disk and how it had been previously partitioned prior to the mishap. Did I miss something? I agree with jaclaz that even though the unattended file specifies that "<WillWipeDisk>true</WillWipeDisk>", and I didn't see a /q option specified for any of the partition format statements, if the OP was able to find any info at all during his recovery efforts, then there must not have been a "wipe" executed and the format must have been a quick one: So there might be a small chance to recover more of the OP's data. Cheers and Regards -

Which again tells nothing. It might help to occasionally describe the specific info you would like to get, rather than just point out the general failures of info you didn't get. Some people learn better from examples rather than trying to guess what you are looking for. Just sayin'... Cheers and Regards -
Please edit your post, do not post consecutive posts 1 minute apart, and do not double post. It sounds like you have been having enough annoyances you should just re-install and start over from a clean source. Cheers and Regards

AFAIK, boot.wim cannot, should not, and does not need to be updated with SP1. Since you say in your OT comment that you have a Win7 SP1 disk that you tweaked using RT7Lite, you must have already had a Win7 SP1 untweaked source, right? So why are you having trouble finding, creating or using a Win7 SP1 source now? Anyway, once you manage to download or create a Win7 SP1 source again, keep a copy of it untouched for any future use. As to your OT comment, many of us on this forum, and most if not all of us that have responded in this thread, do not use or think very highly of RT7Lite and do not recommend its use. The implication from your experience is that you removed something you shouldn't have, and again AFAIK, once you have removed it you can't put it back, so you'll have to start over and try again. If you want to follow up with further questions regarding RT7Lite, please post them in a thread or forum that is set up to discuss it. Anywhere else and your question is likely to get ignored. Cheers and Regards PS: PLEASE edit the title of this thread to be in more proper English if you want any further respect or help with your questions.

Your idealism and optimism knows no bounds! I totally agree that is the way it should be in a perfect world, but unfortunately their behavior and decisions around the world in their entire history say that will not happen. Some of the MS support team are members and contributors on this board and, to my knowledge, they have never made a single post in any of the threads having to do with extending or modifying any of the Win98 or Win2K files discussed in any of the threads here even though they would be aware of the work being done just by looking at the forum index. Some might argue that their silence implies consent, but somehow I doubt that. Again, I could be wrong, but... Cheers and Regards

RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
bphlpt replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Office has required the Japanese fonts in order to install successfully for a long time and has been an annoyance to many, many people. They should definitely be listed in "files to keep" for anyone who wishes to install MS Office. Cheers and Regards -
Does the BIOS indicate that it sees the disc as the correct size? If so, and you're pretty sure that the disc is OK I guess you could always just reinstall from scratch? Cheers and Regards

I would guess, as far as SP3 is concerned, that it should use the best setting for 1GB of ram or less, which it seems is no setting, and maybe add an easily found note in the docs of suggested changes the user should try if they want to use more than 1GB - assuming that the system can't tell how much ram is installed on its own and make the appropriate changes automatically. (If only it was that easy - but I know that it's not. ) Cheers and Regards

Data recovery - do I have any chance?
bphlpt replied to Octopuss's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Try not to be too offended. Most of those types of statements from jaclaz are usually meant to either get you thinking of what important details you might have forgotten, or as an example to other readers of the type of questions and info that are required to get the best answer the quickest. It might help if you were to provide the exact statements in your unattended that have anything to do with partitioning, formatting and installing the OS so that we can get a even better idea where to go from here, if anywhere. Also I think jaclaz mentioned being curious which OS exactly was installed - Win7 x64 we assume? What all have you tried to recover the data off the disc? I think you said you were not able to find anything, right? Are you using the newly installed OS on the disc, or did you go ahead and install onto the "right" disc and you're using that? Cheers and Regards -
That sounds like a good idea, but since, as fdv said, the binaries of many of the pieces of tomasz86's work come from MS, (even though they are no longer supported in any way by MS, just like a lot of the Win98 pieces that are discussed on this forum), MS might have a problem with them being posted on Sourceforge and then being worked on by multiple people. There might not be any issue, but... Cheers and Regards

Data recovery - do I have any chance?
bphlpt replied to Octopuss's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I guess I stand corrected, though I could have sworn I had recovered data from a disc that had been formatted by Win 7. I guess it now depends if the OP's unattended did a full format or not. Cheers and Regards
