Batch files confusion
bphlpt replied to Octopuss's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
So you are asking what in general the practical differences are in the results from the following 4 different statements when they are made inside a .cmd batch file, correct? 1) xyz.exe 2) cmd xyz.exe 3) start xyz.exe 4) cmd start xyz.exe And I assume you are curious under which circumstances you should use each format? Cheers and Regards -
Yes, but note your (1) says that the Start button will go to the Start Screen, NOT the Start Menu, so it will be a pointless change. Cheers and Regards
-
You could try re-installing it again in Win8 and then see if you can un-install it. Cheers and Regards
-
It all depends on how "bad" the update is, how much publicity the bad update gets, and how badly MS gets raked over the coals for it. Cheers and Regards

And that's why there are different tools for different people. Cheers and Regards

I think tomasz86 has a lot of experience in identifying file versions and deciding which one to use in cases like this. I would check with him for his suggestions on the best tool and methodology. Cheers and Regards

Sure. But what purpose except "wow I can search from taskbar like Mac OS X"? No need for any Orb or start button... clean'ish Win8 look... and just an idea / option .... LOL, I thought the main purpose of StartIsBack was the Orb/Start button. Cheers and Regards

@frogman, if you find an app that works for you, please let us know. Your experience might help others in a similar situation. Cheers and Regards

AMD FX-6300 processor - worrying temperatures
bphlpt replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
@submix8c, Thanks for reminding me that this is the same guy. How could I have forgotten? Based on some of his previous posts about his prior sound issues, it is extremely unlikely that he will ever pull his computer out of wherever he has it wedged to do or check anything at all inside his rig, such as reapply his thermal paste, check for any obstruction or anything rubbing on a fan, check for a failed fan, etc. He is right that it is a physical impossibility for the registered temperature to read lower than ambient temperature if the software (Core temp) and hardware (temp sensor) are operating correctly. So one of them is wrong, but which one? Phaenius, per his usual approach, seems to want to blame the software, even though it is well respected, is highly recommended, and has been suggested for use by several members here, since that way he doesn't have to drag his rig out and take it apart and possibly leave something disconnected when he puts it back together, as he has done in the past. So we can suggest other software for him to try, or he can just uninstall and re-install Core temp in case something just got borked somehow. But this really sounds like a hardware issue, after all he admits that part of the hardware problem is an intermittently faulty fan controller, and I truly believe that the temperature sensing issue is hardware related as well. I would start with cleaning (he hates that word, LOL) the CPU and reapplying good thermal paste as a start and closely checking all the wiring to all the fans and the controller. Since he knows the fan controller is iffy, I would also go along with bonestonne's suggestion to minimize the number of fans running and only use the on-board controller temporarily. I don't have any problem with Phaenius's assertion that more fans are better, within reason, but I feel it is more important to first be able to get correct and accurate temperature readings before then trying to figure out how to get the best/lowest temperature. After all, if your temperature readings are not accurate, how will you really know whether whatever else you are doing is helping or not? But if he is not willing to do any hardware tests or modifications as we are suggesting to help him solve his problem. then I am out of here. Cheers and Regards -
I'm not trying to dispute your experience or get into a flame war, but I am curious about this since I have not understood why anyone would choose not to upgrade to the latest SP. Could you please give me some examples of the software you have found where the above statement is true, and tell me if you have discovered the exact mechanism that causes the failure in the later SP's? Thanks in advance. Cheers and Regards

Sorry, I don't, and never have run Vista so I have no idea. Cheers and Regards

I find it very curious, and somewhat disconcerting, that xper has not addressed this, commented in this thread, or even responded to Kel's question at least privately. Cheers and Regards

My point was, that on many systems, if not most, even the internal speaker can be unplugged (usually from an internal header) or turned off, which might help you keep your sanity until you find what is causing the noise through the speaker. Cheers and Regards

Yes this an open and free forum, but I don't know how much more clear that Tihiy can be: And I'm not sure who you are supposed to be "helping" with your "suggestions", since I have not seen anyone but you posting about wanting to auto close this toy. Insisting, as you have been, on promoting the use of this toy for a use for which is not intended and against the expressed desires of the toy creator, is, if nothing else, extremely poor net etiquette. But if you just want to go by the rules of this forum, you are supposed to keep all posts in a thread on topic. The topic of this thread is about the toy being used as a test-bed - period. If you really want to talk about hacking an auto close into it, then please start a separate thread about it, just as ORelio made a Tweaker thread for bigmuscle's Aero Glass app. Cheers and Regards

You unplug the speaker and yet it still makes a sound through it? How is that possible? If you don't otherwise need the internal speaker, then I would think you can just unplug/disconnect/remove the internal speaker and be done with it. It can't make any noise if it's not there. Of am I missing something? And I don't understand your comment about the BIOS. What does that have to do with this? You say that it is the "modem" speaker. Do you use the modem? If not, remove it. If you do, then there should be some way to turn the speaker off. Maybe it would help if you provided motherboard and modem part numbers, maybe with pictures showing which speaker is causing the noise? Cheers and Regards

Pagefile with SSD is kind of a problem. You don't want the pagefile on the SSD because you don't want the read/write wear on the SSD that would cause, but you also almost always need some kind of pagefile, as you have stated. So I would think that the best solution would be to use as much memory in your system that your motherboard, OS, and wallet can fit to minimize the need for any pagefile, and put a small pagefile on the fastest spinning HDD in your system. Also put the Photoshop "Scratch file" on that same HDD. Yes, if your wallet can live with the possible hit, you would get better performance if you put those files on the SSD, but you would shorten the SSD's life. So it's a trade-off. Yes, you can also use a RAM drive for both of those if you have enough RAM, which would give you killer performance yet not shorten the SSD's life. Choices, choices. Cheers and Regards

NO. That is not the point of this toy. That's just it. This toy is not meant for new users. If you don't know what you are doing and are not already familiar with StartIsBack, then do not play with this. Do not ask questions of how to do any particular feature that you think is not working, do not ask for additional features to be added, do not complain about anything that is not working, do not ask for support of any kind. This toy has a very particular purpose and it is NOT for normal use whatsoever, it is only a testbed, period. This is not a Beta version as you appear to think that it is. Try it if you like, report your experience and provide feedback. The communication path for this particular toy is primarily meant to be one way - from you to Tihiy. Don't expect anything back. If Tihiy wants any further clarifying information from you he will post and ask for it. Of course it can and it will be when this toy is matured into an App, and not until then. As long as it is a toy it will NOT be made to auto close, so quit asking. And your suggestion to use any kind of task kill software or hack as a "fix" for this is ridiculous. No app that has to be killed to be closed should be used on a regular basis. The task kill apps are meant to help when an app is stuck because of some error, not just to get it out of the way as a convenience to you. Cheers and Regards

ace2, as has already been stated, this test toy was not meant to feel native. Stop asking for these types of "improvements". When Tihiy is ready to make an app that is meant for general use, rest assured that it will feel every bit as native as something straight from MS, only better. Cheers and Regards

@xpman, I would be very interested if you would be willing to share the results of your Win7/8 install.wim combination experiments, hopefully with a summary of what it is capable of and a tutorial of how to obtain the working install medium, including necessary tools and steps, since this will obviously need to be updated at least monthly for the foreseeable future. (I'm assuming your AIO has both 32-bit and 64-bit options? And can it be created on either a 32-bit or 64-bit host OS, or is a 64-bit host OS required for the AIO creation?) Cheers and Regards

@dencorso, will those instructions apply to Windows XP? (Check which sub forum this question was asked in) The link you pointed to, and the ones it points to from there, all seem to be talking about Windows 7 and later. Cheers and Regards

I could be wrong about this, but I think with laptops with built-in WiFi that the antenna is hidden behind the display, The old school WiFi add-in cards, for laptops without built-in WiFi, also had antennas sticking out of the card. Cheers and Regards

As bigmuscle and the link that alexd2w posted said, this is apparently a known bug in Win8 that has nothing at all to do with any theme of any kind, patched or not, and nothing at all to do with Aero Glass or DWM. And MS in all their wisdom currently has no work around for this but plans to release some kind of two stage fix over June and July. In the meantime, NoelC's suggestion to not use sleep mode might well be advised. Cheers and Regards
