A simple answer - no. (There is a complex answer of yes, but it takes a bit of work.) Cheers and Regards

Windows7 and SSD (no 100mb partition)
bphlpt replied to Dogway's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
As cdob has now explained, your misunderstanding, and mine, was in the use of the word sees. If you change it to uses, then to paraphrase cdob ~"If you use Windows 7 to delete a file on any partition, then Windows 7 will inform the SSD and that file's space will be trimmed."~ Thanks for the clarification cdob! Cheers and Regards -

lost partition and filesystem problem with Adata SH14 disk
bphlpt replied to nthnl's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I would also suggest going back to the company you gave the disk to, and see if they might be a little more forthcoming as to what exactly they did to it. (And personally, I would never give them a disk again. ) Cheers and Regards -
I don't know if this will fix your issue, primarily since I'm not 100% sure you issue is not more related to the CF card / CF-IDE adapter / IDE cabbles rather than the DirectX install itself. But you can look at this. It allows you to create your own DirectX installer and/or addon, along with an uninstaller which can completely remove a prior DirectX install no matter how it was originally installed. It has been used for several years now and has been tested on XP, XP64, and Win7. (Full disclosure - Win2k has some issues I never got around to fixing.) Since your symptoms indicate a problem with installing DirectX, maybe getting rid of the (IMHO) bloated MS installer might help your situation. If it works, if you rerun the MS DirectX installer after using the one you made yourself, the MS installer will indicate that everything is already installed so it will do nothing else. Good luck. Cheers and Regards

I appreciate you trying to point out the problem, and I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but I really can't see it. Maybe, since you've explained, someone else can see it. Good luck. Cheers and Regards

Yep, it seems to be a recurring problem for MS after each patch Tuesday. (I think I was adding to my post, referencing the other thread, at the same time you were writing yours.) Cheers and Regards

We understand your situation, but please understand ours. As to the artifacts, we'll deal with what we can see, which in this case is nothing. Cheers and Regards

duffy98, I'm confused. You were already aware of this issue since you participated in this thread, so I don't understand why this caught you so off guard this time, Isn't this the same thing as the other thread, or directly related to it? I know it was a long time ago, (last month), but ... LOL j/k Bottom line, to quote from a new post in that other thread, until MS gets this truly fixed, each month before trying to do anything else with WU/MU: For November 2013, you can find the appropriate updates here, and in general, you can find them each month by doing a search for "cumulative security update for internet explorer", and it will probably be the first "technet.microsoft.com" link. Cheers and Regards

??? I don't think that :EOF needs to be explicitly included. GOTO EOF should still just go to the "End Of File", ie exit, quit, vamoose, scram, etc. Am I missing something? Cheers and Regards

Windows7 and SSD (no 100mb partition)
bphlpt replied to Dogway's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Sorry, I'm confused. Why must either partition ever be hidden except during OS install? Cheers and Regards -
Windows7 and SSD (no 100mb partition)
bphlpt replied to Dogway's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
The way I understood it, was that once you have both OS and the boot manager set up, that you leave both partitions set to id 07, both unhidden, and go about booting to and using whichever OS you wish. I think you only need to worry about hiding and changing id's during the OS install process. (Also during OS updates?? Maybe not. I'm not sure.) I think that cdob's comment - "Not the best idea at a SSD at each boot." - referred to your comment about - "Switching constantly to grub4dos" - but I could be wrong. Cheers and Regards -
From a quick look around, some of the older versions were available in a portable form. Their forum shows a bit of dissatisfaction with recent releases, added bloat etc, and lack of a true portable form any more. Cheers and Regards

1) Yes, as of the date it was released, AFAIK You should be able to find a changelog somewhere that specifies exactly what is included. 2) I think you will be better off asking that type of question in either in jaynbe's thread and/or one of the nLite forums. For best results, give as many details as you can. Of course you can always try it in a VM. Cheers and Regards

Silent .NET Maker synthesized 20100118 - W2K/XP/2K3 x86
bphlpt replied to strel's topic in Application Installs
The way I understand Win7 x86/x64, the only frameworks that are appropriate to add are either 4.0 or 4.5, since 4.5 completely replaces 4.0 the same way that 3.5 replaced 3.0. All other frameworks are built-in to Win7 with any updates distributed through MU/WU. I didn't think that updates for <4.0 can be added using this type of tool any more, or have I misunderstood something? Cheers and Regards -
Welcome! Cheers and Regards

The release that you pointed to by jaynbe is a good one, and is the only one that I know of that covers 1.1/2.0/3.5/4.0 client in a single AddOn. But it all depends on exactly what your needs are. Other equally excellent makers of various releases are user_hidden and OnePiece/nonno fabio, (and ricktendo, but mostly for Win7 needs these days), which can all be found over where you found the releases by jaynbe. it all depends on what exactly you need; AddOn vs installer vs True AddOn, client vs full for 4.0, do you really need 1.1, etc. All of the above mentioned authors keep their work updated regularly, usually within a few days of each other, and also usually within a few days of patch Tuesday. So do some reading and make your choice. Cheers and Regards

Bottom line - to my knowledge there is no tweak, program, or any other way to prevent fragmentation that is not more complicated and use more system resources than simply defragmenting on occasion. On any system I have ever heard of, no matter what OS, if there is not some kind of monitoring software actively running, moving files around and trying to consolidate free space so you always have a large contiguous space available on the drive, eventually fragments will occur as the drive fills up, and fragmentation will still occur as the drive gets very full. And that software is just doing the exact same thing that defragmenting software is, but for the average user it is getting in your way even more, slowing you down, because it is always running. Sorry, but if you really know of any possible way to prevent fragmentation, you'll have to prove it to me before I believe you. Cheers and Regards

As I always suggest first for any kind of temperature related question, you should be sure your rig is clean. Take the back off the laptop and blow out any accumulated dust bunnies with canned air. Physically cleaning your rig is usually a fairly easy task for most people and has little risk of problems as long as you take your time and are careful. At a minimum, do a close inspection of all the components, making sure that everything is seated firmly and that the fan(s) seem to be able to spin freely and smoothly and nothing is blocking any of the vents. If you want to do a more thorough job, you could actually unplug and replug all cables, connectors and modules. You could even remove the CPU and replace the thermal compound with fresh, high quality Arctic Silver or something equivalent. Once you have eliminated any physical problems, then you can do further troubleshooting. Cheers and Regards

Yes, I think that is an option for Spybot, if I remember correctly. Cheers and Regards

Yep, in my experience, with every version of Windows that I have had the MS OS itself has NEVER touched the original hosts file, which has always essentially had nothing in it, as NoelC posted above. If it has something else in it, then something else put it there, either you did it yourself so long ago that you have forgotten, or one of the anti-malware apps that you either have installed now, or did at one time, made the changes. Apparently whatever it is still is updating the file, since it made an update a month ago, so I would check with all your anti-malware apps to see which one of them is updating the hosts file. [There is even malware that updates the hosts file to suit its own purposes, so I would strongly suggest making sure you know what it is that is doing it.] Cheers and Regards

You could also try running Win98 in a VM. I haven't done it, but I'm sure someone else has. Cheers and Regards
